The heat. Now were watching things cool down. Low clouds and fog surging onshore. The temperatures still fairly mild in the 50s and the 60s. Cooler days are ahead. Well have more on that coming up. Heres what we know about the deadly plane crash at sfo. The pilots of asiana flight 214 were not tested for drugs or alcohol after the accident. We also found out the two flight attendants were actually thrown, ejected, from the plane at impact. The coroner ned the parents of 16yearold ye ming yaun informed the parents of 16year old ye ming yaun has she may have been run over by responding emergency that she may have been run over by responding emergency vehicles. Investigators want to know if something went wrong with the auto throttle equipment similar to cruise control. Kpix 5s allen martin explains how pilots depended on it to maintain the proper speed for landing. Reporter the crew told investigators they set the planes auto throttles to 137 knots then assumed they would maintain the correct speed. We have a flying pilot and we have two other pilots that are in the cockpit and they have a monitoring function. One of the very critical things that needs to be monitored on an approach to landing is speed. Reporter three pilots were in the cockpit at the time of the crash. The flying pilot, the one who was training, was sitting in the left hand seat. His supervisor was in the right hand seat. This was the first time that he and the flying pilot that he was instructing had flown together. Reporter the Instructor Pilot told investigators the plane was too high when they passed 4,000 feet. At about 500 feet, he realized that they were low. He reported seeing three red and one white. He told the pilot to pull back. Reporter at about 200 feet he noticed the auto throttles were not maintaining speed and attempted a goaround. He went to push the throttles forward but the flying pilot had already done so and by then, it was too late to recover. Just 1 1 2 seconds before the crash, the pilot attempted to aboard the landing. On impact, the aircraft ballooned, yawed left and went into a 360degree spin. Two of the flight attendants in the rear of the aircraft were ejected. They were found down the runway and off to the side of the runway. Reporter allen martin, kpix 5. Those two flight attendants survived. One of the pilots was also injured but was treated and later released. Kpix 5s Christin Ayers gives us a new perspective about flying into sfo. She spoke with a man who knows what its like to guide those planes in. Reporter this man was an air Traffic Controller for 26 years. He retired from sfo just days before asiana flight 214 crashed. I have had nightmares about Something Like this happening. Reporter since the crash, he has spoken to the air Traffic Controller in the tower at the time. Asiana 214 heavy emergency vehicles are responding. We have everyone on their way. The guys in the tower and tapes i heard they did a pretty good job up there. Really proud of what they did. Reporter pong says sfo is one of the most challenging airports for an air Traffic Controller. It is harder. Its a complex runway situation. And you have to be on your game. Reporter at most airports, runways are parallel. At sfo, the runways intersect. Only one air Traffic Controller can work at a time and that person must keep the planes a full mile apart. We dont let planes get close. The safety factor is high, whatever we do. Reporter that means frequently aborting landings in what is known as a go around. Its a move the pilot on flight 214 tried a second and a half before crashing. I have never seen that, starting a goaround that late. As you can see, it was too late. Reporter what happened next he says was unfathomable. You dont hear pilots landing short because they are generally able to recognize if theyre low and they take corrective actions. Reporter it didnt happen in time on 214. And pong still cant imagine why. I worked at sfo for many years and i have never seen anything like that before. So very unusual. Reporter much has been made of the fact that that glide slope system, the system which guides planes in when theyre trying to land, was not working. Pong says even under those conditions a pilot should be able to land safely at this airport. Christin ayers kpix 5. The wreckage of asiana flight 214 can still be seen alongside the runway and thats what some passengers are seeing when they land at sfo. Asianas president and ceo flew over the debris when his plane landed next to the destroyed 777. Kpix 5s joe vazquez shows us it wasnt the only overwhelming scene he had to deal with. Reporter just after noon, the president of Asiana Airlines touches down. His plane landing on the parallel runway next to the burned up fuselage three days after the crash. Inside the airport the ceo in the glasses and green tie at first looks like he is going to talk to reporters. Back in korea he apologized in front of cameras for the crash that killed two and injured dozens. He charged right into the media scrum and just keeps walking at which point chaos. Photographers start swarming him. Hey, everybody get over make room reporter the media mob closes ranks asking questions. The ceo and the officers guarding him feel trapped. Get back reporter its a frenzy. The cops are not happy. One Police Officer starts shoving cameras to make room. Photographers are stuck in a stampede. Yun walks back the way he came. Police officers hustle him back to an area not accessible to journalists. Yun didnt make any public statements. He was planning to meet with family members and flight crewmembers but if they happened it was away from the public and media. Beginning july 1, the Interest Rates on new Student Loans doubled from 3. 4 to 6. 8 impacting 7 million College Students this year. Today the senate votes on a proposal that keeps the rate at 3. 4 for a year. Theres one catch. I know they are not going to vote to simply extend this current law for 6 months. Reporter House Republicans passed a bill that ties the student loan rate to the us treasury borrowing cost plus 2. 5 . As rates rise, so does the cost of education, up to a max of 8. 5 . What they have done over there is worse for students than doing nothing. Reporter democratic senator joe manchin working with republicans has proposed a similar plan with one key difference. It wont use the savings to pay down the nations debt. In this bipartisan group, we all agree that profits should not be made on the backs of students trying to go to school. Thats a big difference. House republicans will push for tighter Border Security during todays talks on Immigration Reform. The senate has passed an Immigration Reform bill with bipartisan support but House Republicans say they want to create their own bill. Reporter Santa Clara County set out a trap like this one after neighbors reported several episodes involving packs of coyotes. Like the time four of them surrounded mikes dog in his backyard. He says the animals roam the area at all times of day, killed three cats, dog and dozen chickens and terrified neighbors on eight occasions. I heard a jogger go by. The next thing i heard, coyotes yelping. There were coyotes chasing this guy down the street. Reporter what did you do when you saw the coyotes . I turned around and went the other way. Reporter this person says the coyotes are approaching humans because they are likely being hand fed. And its not too late to train the coyotes to fear people again. People are inadvertently causing these animals to think they run the show there because people are very passive these days. They need to learn to work with nature. They need to learn to be human again. We didnt survive by turning our backs on predators. Reporter state law says any coyotes that are caught must be euthanized. Are you okay with that . You know, i was saddened by it when i first heard it until i realized that its my dog and my daughter and my neighbors or the coyotes.
