i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. time now is 6:00. a major fire in lafayette is snarling the east bay commute. highway 24 has been a mess. let's kick it over to gianna and find out how things are going. >> they have at least three lanes shut down because of this car carrier that caught fire. we have been monitoring this for almost an hour now. here's a live look from chopper 5. and you can see it's still smoldering there in the area. this is on the right side of highway 24 at central lafayette there. so they have opened two lanes but again traffic is still jammed all the way from 680 causing a bottleneck effect. so you definitely want to avoid the area if you can. now, we want to show you some video of what actually happened in that area. we have that for you right now. so you can see earlier the car carrier on the right shoulder completely caught fire. it was fully engulfed carrying at least 9 vehicles. it did ignite a grass fire there over to the right shoulder, as well. so lots of fire crews there were on scene and again that's when the backup really began. it's really going to cause a lot of delays for people headed toward the caldecott tunnel. quite a problem there. let me show you on the maps. you have red and yellow so very slow speeds coming away from 680. right now they are saying your alternates are highway 4, mount diablo is a good choice, as well. you can use bart also. no delays right now. bart is running on time systemwide so that's a good choice, as well. back to you guys. a developing story right here in san francisco. police forcefully evicting protestors from an urban farm in the hayes valley. officers used a cherrypicker to get that last protestor out of a tree. kpix 5's sue kwon is there live with more. >> reporter: you know, really dramatic few hours here. and as you mentioned, there were three protestors who would not leave. they were still up in the trees. the san francisco police department got people down and brought up cherry pickers and negotiated for up to 30 minutes and then they were in a position to actually get ahold of the man and pull them safely into the bucket. they then brought him down and arrested him along with two other people who would not leave the trees. one man fell from a tree but on to a box of cushions. the sergeant tells us that there were minor injuries involved. in all, there are about 40 people camped out here overnight. they knew the police were going to come in. the rest of the people left when told and there were 7 others on the street who were arrested for basically causing a commotion. now what we have here, live, are images of dpw coming in and taking down the debris left by the people who have been protesting. this is all over protests against avalon bay and build, inc., coming in to construct about 185-unit complex here. this has been a community garden since the fell ramp shut down. this was an empty lot sold to a developer. most people know this has been going on but people got attached to this land they were growing a garden and members of the "occupy" movement came in, as well. but again this morning ended relatively peacefully if you consider the tense situation. san francisco police say this operation went well. reporting live in san francisco, back to you. >> thank you, sue kwon. san francisco police also dealing with a double murder overnight. two men were shot to death near the intersection of brookdale and blithedale in the visitacion valley just south of john mclaren park. police are looking for three suspects in a white truck this morning. san jose police are dealing with the city's 24th homicide overnight. officers were called to a home on checkers drive just after 12:30 this morning. they found a stabbing victim in front of a home. >> yeah. i'm surprised. this never happened here before. wait four to five hours to go home. they didn't tell me anything. >> the man died at the hospital. police are still investigating the motive and aren't sure whether the murder was gang- related. work resumes this morning at the new 49ers stadium. the site has been shut down since a deadly accident on tuesday. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec joins us now from santa clara as crews return to the job. it's a tough day today for those workers. >> reporter: definitely. we have seen a lot of workers walking in today. the first thing they will have is a safety meeting this morning. the construction company in charge of the construction here at the new levi's stadium will make a stadium to all 1200 construction workers here. 63 donald white an employee of schindler elevator died when he was hit by a counterweight on tuesday in an elevator shaft that was when he was work there is that morning. the workers that i spoke with this morning didn't know white, but their hearts go out to his family today. >> you got to do what you got to do. got to still come to work and, you know, just got to be extra cautious about everything else and just pay attention. >> reporter: the construction was halted after that accident on tuesday. today cal-osha will be on scene and they will also have an elevator specialist on scene. cal-osha is continuing the investigation into exactly how this happened. they think that that will take about 6 months total. right now live in santa clara, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> in addition to the investigation by cal-osha, it's also being investigated by santa clara police and fire departments. some developing news out of colorado where a wildfire is burning for a third day now. the black forest fire has scorched nearly 9,000 acres near colorado springs. flames have consumed more than 90 homes and 7,000 people have all been evacuated. hot weather and dry conditions are helping to fuel that fire in colorado. and an impressive image. check it out. you get a feel for the size of that fire. take a look at the picture here. it's a huge black plume of thick smoke seen rising from the black forest blaze. it could be seen from miles away while this baseball game was going on. wow. a massive storm rolled through the midwest overnight heading towards maryland. twisters in iowa, illinois. there it is. damaged homes and businesses. other areas have been hit with hail, lightning, strong winds, which have toppled trees, ruined homes, power lines are down. more than 1,000 people have lost power. so mother nature is not happy. >> not at all. >> pretty happy out here. but the east coast will be a mess again. they have a chance for more severe weather again. here in the bay area more sunshine and nice weather to begin the day. mostly clear skies out there right now except for a couple of patches of fog at the coast. we are expecting mostly sunny skies as we head throughout the day today just a breeze out along the coastline. a couple of patches of fog there early on but that should give way to a nice shot like this. beautiful as the sun comes up over the bay this morning and plenty of sunshine in most spots by the afternoon. a little cool though. we are looking at 46 degrees in santa rosa, 49 in oakland right now. and 53 degrees in concord. afternoon hours promise lots of sunshine and 70s some low 80s inland once again. you will see a lot of 60s and 70s around the bay but along the coastline still some 50s and 60s couple of patches of fog. that should give way to sunshine this afternoon. but there's some warmer weather on the way. but it's going to be very fast. only for one day. we'll talk about that coming up. bart's vacation policy may be getting fresh scrutiny. the agency's general manager says she is open to reviewing it for any abuses. it comes on the news that former bart gm dorothy dugger saved up thousands of hours of unused vacation time and cashed it in for hundreds of thousands of dollars when she retired. the current gm tells the "contra costa times" she can understand the public outrage over the issue. the video has gone viral am a naked man assaulting people at the 16th street bart station. big-time trouble if you are an east bay commuter. >> a huge backup now on highway 24. let's head to gianna. >> reporter: live pictures from the scene. we have been monitoring this about an hour and a half. westbound 24 at central lafayette this car carrier fully engulfed at one point. they have opened at least three lanes. traffic is easing up. traffic is backed up to 680. 680 also affected now. it's really backed up as you work your way towards the southbound side towards 24. >> you can see the flames. car carrier was fully engulfed. flames why seen from under the carrier. -- flames were seen from under the carrier, nine vehicles on the car carrier. the fire department responded there to a grass fire. it is going to take time to mop it up. tow crews are on the scene. 680 also backed up because of the trouble spot on westbound 24, of course 24 very busy, as well. use highway 4. bart is a good alternate. the good news is once you pass the mess, if you are heading towards the caldecott tunnel, traffic isn't too bad. delays at the by bridge. 80 backed up through berkeley. delays at the bay bridge. >> good day for bart. >> definitely. some developing news here in san francisco. police raid an urban farm in the middle of the night to remove protestors. officers forced -- used a cherrypicker to eject the last holdout out of a tree. kpix 5's sue kwon is there live. >> reporter: i'm at hayes valley farm just off fell street. been here since about 4 a.m. this has been a busy night with 100 police officers, bulldozers, tree cutters now clearing debris from the area. i want to show you that video of the dramatic moment when police were take the last of three tree-sitters. they used a cherrypicker and tried to negotiated for 30 minutes with this person named or referred to as mike. he would not come out. they did grab him and pull him into the bucket. and then they lowered him successfully. one other tree-sitting fell out of a tree on to cushions. police say there were minor injuries. all three were arrested plus four others on the street. this is a sergeant describing the evening. >> over the past week now, we have been giving notices coming out and talking to the folks to let them know they were trespassing on city property. we worked with homeless outreach and dpw to actually ask them if they want to store their property if they couldn't take them with them. we have been given verbal and written notices that we would be coming out here and removing them from the area. >> by all accounts, he says this was a successful and peaceful operation for police. but 7 arrests, four on the street, and three inside tree- sitters. an ambulance was standing by. i believe those were minor injuries treated at the scene. this is all over protests over a condominium company coming in. avalon bay and build, inc., coming in to build 185 units. they purchased this land once the fell street off-ramp was removed and the area was a community garden because way in. a lot of them are just trying to put this out of their minds as they get back to their jobs. the contractor, turner devcon, that is the company that's been working on this stadium, is going to make a statement this morning as they hold a safety meeting for the employees, 1200 construction workers total. 63-year-old donald white an employee of schindler elevator died when he was hit by is backed up to the antioch bridge. a power outage causing problems in mountain view. 5800 customers are without power. calderon decastro street el camino real and north of sonya, avoid those areas. near the coastline right now. temperatures in the 40s and 50s right now. but as we head toward the afternoon, plenty of sunshine warming the temperatures up nicely right about the average. then just a built of an afternoon sea breeze but there are some bigger changes coming our way for the weekend. so we have a trough along the west coast right now. high pressure going to start to build in for tomorrow. that's going to bring us probability the warmest day of the week -- probably the warmest day of the week on friday. today a little warmer. no delays at sfo as we are going to see mostly sunny skies there into the afternoon. but if you are headed across the country, you might see at least a slight chance of some thunderstorms into denver. a strong storm possible in new york. so if you are flying in that direction, make sure you checker carrier. there may be some problems heading in that direction. temperatures for the bay area today, looking at some 70s and low 80s inland. you will see 60s and 70s around the bay and mostly sunny skies even along the coastline today. we should find plenty of sunshine by the afternoon. looking out over the next couple of days, maybe a little warmer on friday. but over the weekend, things change. clouds start to roll back in a little bit thicken up coastside and temperatures will be cooling down. still not bad. >> two thumbs up. >> yeah. we'll take it. all right. thanks. here's something that may give you the hebejeebies. bats are making noise, smell and attracting curious people. they may eat insects but people should be careful because bats carry rabies possibly. >> they love mosquitos. 6:48 now. another bay area city is dropping those red light traffic cameras. belmont says they are going to be gone by the end of june. the cameras were supposed to spare police the job of monitoring some of their busy intersections but studies found no evidence the cameras improved safety at all and in some cases were dangerous distractions. >> you're afraid to make turns. you're afraid to go straight. you're afraid -- people are all, uhm, their mind is on these cameras, way too much. >> hayward and redwood city are ending their programs, as well. fewer americans are signing up for unemployment benefits. more americans are buying cars. here now to chat about it, kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. >> reporter: good morning. some decent news on the u.s. economy to start with this morning including on the job market. the labor department reporting that first time weekly unemployment claims fell by 12,000 to 334,000. that's nearing the five-year low that was reached a month ago. four-week average slid to 345,000. that signifies that there's more hiring than firing taking place. as far as consumers are concern, the commerce department reported that retail sales in may were up six-tenths of a percent over that of april. strongest gain in three months. all tow sales led the way up 1.8%. that was their strongers gain in 6 months. safeway is in the spotlight this morning. after the chain sold its canadian stores for $5.7 billion, it will use $2 billion to pay down debt. the rest will go towards buying back shares. investors love that deal. safeway shares are soaring higher this morning. let's take a look at the big board. after a couple of rough days and despite the positive economic information, market down, dow down 20, nasdaq down 3, s&p down 1. safeway shares up 15%. >> thank you, kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. are you having trouble out there keeping your mind transplant surgery. sarah murnaghan has cystic fibrosis and her parents challenged the policy that made children under 12 wait for pediatric lungs, which are rarely donated. a judge agreed to put her on an adult transplant list. >> we expect her to be, you know, doing some things within the next couple of days and taking her first breath so we can't wait for that. >> a relative says the lungs transplanted yesterday in philadelphia are from an adult donor, although the surgery is considered a success sarah is not out of the woods yet. doctors will be watching for any signs of rejection. another youngster dealing with a very difficult illness gets the thrill of a lifetime. he will never forget this. and you might not, either. check it out. 13-year-old nick legrande threw out the ceremonial first pitch for last night's game in oakland last night all the way from kansas city, missouri. google provided the technology that allowed nick's pitch to be tracked by cameras sent to a robot in oakland that sent the baseball to the plate and the catcher. aides relief pitcher ryan cook help set it up. >> pretty exhilarating feeling. just the fact that electronically we were able to christened one of the world's largest cruise ships today. this will probably be her last public appearance before she gives birth. she is eight months pregnant. kate christened princess cruise's new royal princess in england. duchess kate was reprising a role played by her late mother- in-law, princess diana, who christened an earlier princess ship of the same name back in 1984. >> she is finally looking pregnant. a husband in orange county is in big trouble. >> he has five kids though but man this guy is in a lot of trouble. he accidentally sold his wife's wedding ring at a garage sale for 10 bucks. >> boy. >> that ring was worth $23,000. the woman apparently put it in an old watch box before going to the hospital to deliver their fifth child. there it is. while she was recuperating, the central lafayette a car carrier caught fire this morning. it shut down all but one lane at one point. they have three lanes open but you're backed up to 680. 680 troublesome, as well. looks like 680
