A memorial has been growing meanwhile outside the Santa Cruz PoliceDepartment Since the officers were killed more than a week ago. This is a live look at the memorial this morning as members of the department prepare to pay their final respects to their two fellow officers. Just an outpouring of support there. And, of course, kpix 5 will have live coverage of todays memorial and that starts today at noon. If you are driving in that area later on today you will want to take alternate routes this morning. Thats elizabeth. There should be delays on highway 17 with rolling closures as this milelong procession goes between the Santa Cruz Boardwalk and downtown san jose. They are supposed to leave at 8 45 and get there by 11 00. Highway 17 to southbound 85, highway 87 and then exiting at julian street. So lets go to our maps to talk about alternates. Unfortunately, there is not a great way to get around. Chp told us the best alternate is to take state route 129 in watsonville and cut the long way around up towards 101. Basically avoid the freeways where the procession is taking place. They are also said to avoid highway 9 and popular alternates could get backed up. Mass transit is another great option as frank and michelle mentioned. Carpooling, light rail. So far by the way everything is on time. Well talk much more about this plus the rest of your morning commute coming up. Back to you guys. Thank you. A rash of stabbings in San Francisco this morning sent four people to the hospital. The Fire Department says three people were stabbed about 2 15 this morning at 17th and mission streets a little more than an hour later another person was stabbed at 26th and folsom streets. There is no word on any of the victims conditions at this point. San francisco Police Department is not commenting. Investigators in the Central Valley are trying to figure out how a volunteer was mauled to death by the very lion she was taking care of it. It happened yesterday at cat haven, an Animal Sanctuary in the sierra foothills east of fresno. Kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is live in our newsroom with more on what happened. Reporter the Humane Society is coming out this morning saying this was irresponsible and the victim should not have been in the end closure with the lion unsupervised. Fresno county sheriffs deputies found the young woman lying by the lion severely injured just yesterday afternoon. Another park worker wouldnt lure the lion into another pen so deputies shot and killed it to get to the victim. But she died at the scene. She was identified as 24year old diana haun son a seattle native who moved to the area to intern at cat haven. Hansons father says this was her dream job and the big african cats had been her lifes interest and work. Definitely said you couldnt go into the cage and i remember she was pretty disappointed they wouldnt let her go in the cages with the lion and tiger but she went in the cages with all the other animals and i saw on the news where she had gotten into the cage during the feeding. So i dont know what she was doing about that. But it look like she decided to go in. Reporter the lion was a 4 yearold adult male named couscous. Before this incident he was featured on several tv shows and was considered a celebrity on tv at the 100acre facility. Right now authorities are still trying to figure out the details of what happened just before the attack including what provoked the animal to strike and why she was alone in the enclosure. They live in the west portal neighborhood where 23 homes were damaged after a 60year old pipe started gushing water last week. At least four homes are completely off limits now. Two others have limited use. And 20 others are still cleaning up after a water main break turned the neighborhood into a lake. One neighbor said she called 911 when her dog woke up hearing the sound of gushing water but no one came so she called again. About 10 minutes between them. I know i was frantic trying to evacuate my kids but i definitely said the main street water pipe burst. And she should have been able to know from the sound of my voice that it was not a toilet. Mayor ed lee met with homeowners after he took a tour of the damaged homes yesterday. It could be three to six months before residents can get back into their homes. Richmond police are offering a 20,000 reward in an effort to catch the burglars who stole guns from an officers home and poisoned two dogs in the process. They laced food with poison eaten by the black lab on friday. When the officer brought the dog to a vet, the burglars broke in and poisoned the other dog, a k9 from the richmond pd. This was very intentional, very calculated attack on this officers home. The officers black lab died about the k9 is recovering. The thieves got away with five of the officers firearms. 5 10. The man known as the super cop is laying out his plan of attack to bring down the crime rate in oakland. He says all you have to do is the math. A very small portion of the criminal population commits the majority of the crimes. In l. A. South bay check no major problems here either but once again the funeral procession for those two fallen Santa Cruz Police officers happens later on in the morning commute so you can expect some rolling closures and some pretty big delays are likely coming up highway 17, highway 85, and the guadalupe parkway. With this memorial starting at noon they are expecting possibly a capacity crowd here at hp pavilion capacity is 18,000 people. Last night there was a public viewing last night and yesterday afternoon at santa cruz memorial funeral Friends Family fellow officers and people who didnt know these officers came to pay their respects and say goodbye. Detective butler were shot and killed last week while questioning Jeremy Goulet about a Sexual Assault. Goulet was later killed by other responding officers. Today its about baker and butler. Its been given to the community and to be taken like that severe tragedy. I just respect them and care for them. I know this is a loss for a brother and sister. Reporter they were going to originally hold the big Memorial Service in santa cruz but they decided to move it to san jose because there was no venue large enough for the crowd in santa cruz. Even though we know that the dow and the s p and nasdaq have more than doubled since they all bottomed in march 2009, when we adjust for inflation, the dow is still well below its, get this, year 2000 peak. We actually need to get to 15,700 to break the real dow record. Thats the real number. Reporter theres not a general general euphoria because so many investors were spooked by the gyrating market. Those investors pulled 550 billion from u. S. Stock mutual funds since the high in october 2007. Now, this is a sign that is either good or bad. The winter storm that hit the midwest is now taking aim on the east coast. More than a foot of snow fell in some parts of virginia yesterday and nearly 200,000 people lost power. The moisture off the coastline for the time being, 30s and 40s right now. A better chance of rain as we head in toward the afternoon. Low spinning off the coast thats going to roll all the way down into Southern California. If you are heading down to los angeles, san diego in the next day or so, be prepared. At least likely to be Stormy Weather in that direction. Out there early on the core of the low begins to move closer and by the middle of the day in the afternoon we start to see a few showers beginning to pop up. More showers on the way even a couple of thunderstorms a real possibility as we head into the next couple of days but by friday things clear out by the afternoon and we are looking good. Temperatures should be in the 50s outside by the afternoon. Brisk and cool at the coastline. Next couple of days the winds will kick up.
