Bay area drivers have some of the longest commutes in the country. Data came out on socalled mega commuters. Kpix 5 reporter Elissa Harrington is at the bay bridge toll plaza with just how much time people are wasting behind the wheel. Reporter its a lot of time. The socalled megacommuters spend at least an hour and a half plus 50 plus to get to work each day. There are a lot of them here in the bay area so we have a megacommute here. A lot of drivers in bumperto bumper probably agree. It can get ugly from the maze to San Francisco. The latest statistics were put out by Census Bureau. Megacommuters spend at least 90 minutes in their car and travel at least 50 miles to get to work. In San Francisco the peninsula and east bay more than 2 of fulltime workers are mega commuters. In Santa Clara County, 1. 9 . Were followed by new york with 1. 9 and washington, d. C. With 1. 89 . In most other major cities, less than 1 are mega commuters. So we have almost four times as many here. For nonmegacommuters, things arent so bad. The National Average commute time is about 25 minutes. The big difference here, you dont have to travel as many miles or during those peak hours. So just regular commuters in the bay area spend close to that amount of time. The report shows in 2011 the one way commute time in Santa Clara County was 24. 7 minutes. Almost 28 minutes in oakland. And about half an hour in San Francisco. So there are about 587,000 mega commuters throughout the country but the highest percentage of those here in the bay area. Live at the bay bridge toll plaza, Elissa Harrington, kpix 5. All right, elissa. Thank you. The Census Bureau says mega commuters are more likely than others to take trains or carpools but more than two thirds of them still choose to drive alone.
