I come from a family where generations struggled and had challenges. Specifically speaking, i was supposed to be homeless. I was supposed to be poor. Something that was a big deal. In order to get out of this type of lifestyle, get out of living this way for our children, we knew that working hard in school to get somewhere in life would definitely be the way to go. I look at this young man, i scratch my head. I am amazed. Reporter his family lived in the barbershop where his parents worked for a time because they had no place it stay. Later they lived in a shelter. Patrick helped his little sister as a dad moved in and out of their lives and his mom worked two jobs. That is not all. Oh no, that is is not all. Reporter he was the first in his family to go to college. Thats when students rising above stepped in. They were there for me every step of the way. They were there when i didnt want them to be sometimes, too. No matter what happens, they would reach out and accepted me little emails or shootnia text message and say, hey patrick, where you at . Reporter he graduated from cal and later from nyu law school. Now he is an attorney with the Justice Center working to make the criminal Justice System more fair. You should definitely be held accountable. The thing is you want to make sure the punishment are appropriate and you want to make sure if people are caught up in the system because of Substance Abuse issues, they have treatment to get back on their feet and you keep them together. And in his senior year he finally got to play. If there is anything that sra has taught me is that we are not bound by our past.
