Mallicoat. Im michelle griego. As students head back to class, the ground is still rumbling. More aftershocks in the north bay today. Three quakes have been recorded so far. The largest a magnitude 2. 2 that struck healdsburg at 3 36 this morning. Not a powerful quake but it goes to show the ground in the region wont stop shaking. 94 aftershocks have been recorded since sundays big 6. 0 temblor. A majority have been insignificant but a few definitely were felt. Among them, a 3. 5 aftershock that struck just four minutes after the big one followed by a 3. 6 later that day, yesterday a 3. 9 and 3. 0 aftershocks rattled the napa area. And meteorologist Lawrence Karnow is keeping a close eye on all that ground movement. Lawrence, this is pretty normal after a big earthquake, right . It is. The ground is trying to settle into its new neighborhood. Its been moving quite a bit after that big earthquake. The last 24 hours, more shakers continuing really along the west napa fault. Thats been the main place. But, of course, that energy can also be transferred to some of the other faults. And so we have seen some shakers now up north of healdsburg. That one took place this morning and then we have numerous earthquakes that have shown up around geysers but thats typical. They normally see that all year round. But yeah, we continue to see the shaking, maybe another couple of weeks. I wouldnt be surprised if were measuring 200 or so aftershocks from this earthquake so a lot of folks are worried about that. Thats the latest. Back to you. Thank you. Sundays earthquake gave thousands of students an extended summer break but thats all over now. Kpix 5 reporter anne makovec joins us live, anne, earthquakes were a big part of the lesson plan today. Reporter yeah. They started off the day talking about their experience here at Napa Union High school. Not only during the moment of the quake, but over the course of the last couple of days. Also, some individual classes did earthquake drills an exercise that has a lot more meaning after sundays quake. Reporter a lastminute earlymorning cleanup project at Napa Union High school. One of the sites where people dumped items from their homes damaged in sundays earthquake. By the time students arrived this morning, things were cleaned up but far from normal. We have students who come from families where the houses have been redtagged, others their neighbors or their friends, Family Businesses have been affected. And so we have to be conscious of all that. Reporter at Mcpherson Elementary School feeling a little nervous. Reporter mixed feelings. Im really glad to be at school because i get to see my friends and hopefully they are not injured by the earthquake. Reporter and after a number of aftershocks, parents are on edge, too. Still nervous about it. You know . Im really worried about my daughter but im sure she is in good hands right now. Reporter this is the one school in napa that didnt re open today stone bridge school, less than two miles from the epicenter of sundays quake. Geological survey maps we have a fault that runs right through our campus here. Reporter these cracks in the parking lot werent here after the initial quake, a sign that the earth continues to shift. Our concern is just still the instability of the grounds here. We had some pretty significant aftershocks yesterday on tuesday morning, so with that level we just dont feel comfortable. We would like things to settle out a little bit. Reporter they will be back in session next tuesday with students who likely feel a lot like those who came to class today. Im not really happy because i was happy when i didnt have school. [ laughter ] reporter i understand. And the next big drill at School Statewide will be october 16 for the great california shakeout. Live in napa, anne makovec, kpix 5. In vallejo city officials will continue to inspect buildings today. So far 12 structures have been redtagged. 75 buildings have been yellow tagged for partial use. 59 of those were residential. In napa Recovery Efforts are focusing on repairing broken water lines. The city says 83 lines still need to be fixed. Between 500 and 1,000 customers will be without water in those repair zones. And more roadwork today, crews working on the south highway 29 offramp and good news for people with damaged homes. The city says it will waive inspection and permit fees for people who had earthquake damage. Damage though total for napa sits at 300 million for homes and businesses. And we have more quake coverage coming up including how the Oakland Raiders are actually lending a helping hand. Marilyn hartman the woman notorious for trying to sneak on planes has done it again. She was arrested in arizona yesterday. Police at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport took her into custody for loitering around a security checkpoint without a ticket. Earlier this month, hartman snuck past security at Mineta International airport in san jose and flew to l. A. X. Without a ticket. An l. A. Judge sentenced her to 177 days in jail. But she got out early because of jail overcrowding. Major roadwork planned for a busy San Francisco freeway over the labor day weekend. Northbound lanes of 280 will be closed from highway 101 to king street starting tomorrow afternoon. Traffic will detour to 101 for the duration of the closure. Work on 280 is focusing on an earthquake retrofit project. 280 is set to reopen early tuesday morning. A tanker ship stranded at sea was towed into San Francisco this morning. Chopper 5 took this video of the ship being towed under the golden gate bridge. It was disabled earlier this month when its engine room caught fire killing one crew member. It will be docked in San Francisco for repairs. Hillary clinton is in San Francisco tomorrow. She will be honored guest at a Technology Summit at the st. Regis hotel. Several bay area ceos are also expected to attend. The invitationonly event starts at 8 30. Clinton is expected to give a speech around 11 30 a. M. Some upset music fans are taking action today after not getting the show they expected at the Paul Mccartney concert in candlestick. Most of them didnt make it into the show. 5,000 people were stuck outside the stadium in traffic gridlock. And now some of those fans have started a change. Org petition saying concert organizers and the city of San Francisco should be held accountable for the negligent lack of planning. The group has also started a Paul Mccartney candlestick ticket refund facebook page. They say they want a full refund, not tickets to another show. So far, the petition has 100 signatures. San francisco is sponsoring a first of its kind program to offer legal help to illegal immigrant children. The city is providing money for lawyers to help the children who were unexamined into the country illegally. San francisco is putting up 100,000, as well. Studies have shown people without Legal Assistance are routinely deported. Coming up sundays quake is raising a alarms that there needs to be a statewide alert system but there are some concerns over the cost for it. Plus, its back to school time and for some students, finding the necessary supplies can be hard. Well take you to one organization hoping to change that. Well talk about it next. , la county state senator al padilla is pushing for aler that would include in the aftermath of sundays quake theres growing call for a statewide alert system. Alex padilla is pushing for smartphone alerts. The statewide alert would be costly about 80 million bucks with another 10 to 15 million a year just to maintain it. The director of Emergency Services hopes to put together a Publicprivate Partnership to cover the costs one that would likely include a charge for its users. The raiders are doing their part to help with the napa relief efforts. They have come to know napa as a summer home. The team holds its Training Camp there. Willie brown will be there this afternoon to provide the check to the Unified School District superintendent. The grand total, 50,000. Salvation army handling out meals in napa today. Food been served at the Evacuation Center at the Crosswalk Community church on first street also in the city of napa. Corporation yard on jackson, meals will also be available at a Mobile Home Park on solano avenue. And the First Baptist church in vallejo will serve lunches once again today. Yup, another small quake, a 2. 6. This one near napa again right along the west napa fault. You can see it in red there. It began to shake around noon. We saw that quake that looks like that they are continuing to settle in and we can expect more aftershocks. The biggest one we have seen so far is a 3. 9. All right. So around the bay area today, we have some sunshine beginning to show up over the city of San Francisco. And around much of the bay area away from the coastline, the temperatures are heating up, too. 83 degrees in livermore. 77 in san jose. And 70 degrees in santa rosa. I think throughout the afternoon we are going to notice some warmer temperatures out there. Getting hot in the valleys and then tonight patchy fog likely returning near the coastline maybe a couple of patches inside the bay but that ridge pretty strong now. So its going to hold most of that toward the coast and then a few clouds toward the weekend. Some of that subtropical moisture coming our way. Right now, High Pressure building overhead. That will hold these temperatures on the hot side for today. And probably tomorrow. Then we may begin to notice changes over the weekend and we have a hurricane off the coastline that will bring us some clouds and generating some swell already along the coastline. Some of those swells 6 to 8 feet. Southfacing beaches probably on the decrease though toward the next few days. Temperaturewise, 99 hot in fresno, 95 sacramento. 101 redding. 77 monterey bay. That patchy fog likely to move back in along the coastline overnight tonight. And then maybe a couple of patches sneaking inside the bay but i think most of the valleys will stay clear so were off and running with warm temperatures for tomorrow. Highs today topping out to 81 degrees in san jose. 91 in morgan hill. About 78 in fremont. East bay up in the 90s in many spots. Maybe some mid90s in toward brentwood. Then inside the bay 76 in oakland. 71 in San Francisco. And 82 in petaluma. Your sunset time 7 45. Sunrise 6 37. Looking out over the next few days, High Pressure holding on bringing us lots of sunshine and then hurricane marie falling apart and then here comes some really neat subtropical clouds. Well talk to two homeowners who calculated the risks and the costs and well tell you why they made the decisions they made. That story and more coming up at 5 00. Well, people were up early this morning along the Southern California coastline. They all got up to watch this, giant surf created by hurricane marie. The waves could swell up to 30 feet by later today. It may look like the ride of a lifetime for surfers, but even the best surfers in the world are taking caution. Theres a lot of rip and its not what youre used to. The water is a lot different right now. It a lot more alive. Just be careful and, you know, dont try to prove anything. National Weather Service is warning beachgoers about the large waves. Also strong rip currents as well in Southern California. Youre a surfer. Yeah. I have paddled out and it looks really good when youre paddling out and then you get out there on top of one of those monsters, what am i doing and how can i get back to shore that was only about 15 feet. But 30 feet is huge. We are seeing some big swells along our coastline as well but not like they are in Southern California. The southfacing beaches will see some swells about 6 to 8 feet here at ocean beach. The undertow will be strong. Even if youre just wading in the water, you need to be careful. I saw the the board on your car. Are you heading out . Im headed out now, thats right. Its going to be a great afternoon. Lots of sunshine. No, youre not. They love hurricanes.
