Parade today. We begin our Independence Day coverage with kpix 5s anne makovec who had a front row seat. Looks like fun. Reporter yeah. The parade here in alameda started at 10 00 and it just passed us here on park street but its still going on, on other city streets right now in alameda. Its going to be going on for the next couple of hours. This is the 38th annual parade and it keeps getting big ever every year. It is 3. 2 miles of pure hometown pride. So we are, we believe, the longest in terms of length parade in the United States. The only thing we think beats us is the rose bowl. Reporter an estimated 22,000 spectators began lining up early this morning along the streets of alameda. We started with waffles for breakfast, set up for the parade route at 6 00. Reporter this family brought three generations. Whats your favorite thing . Candy. Reporter but thats not it. Free popcorn. And i get to see my grandfather. Reporter and as with every tradition, certain nuances emerge. He was here before me. [ laughter ] he did the dirty work. And i knew that. Reporter this years parade includes 200 entries and 3,000 participants. Considering there are only 78,000 people that live in alameda, its organizers have a running joke. We have so many people in the parade that eventually we are going to run out of people to watch it. Reporter but this family says they will never miss it, the heart of their summer season. Then we have a barbecue afterwards and this is alameda this is america. Whoo [ applause ] reporter this parade is paid for by sponsors. It even raises money for Alameda County school bands. This year, as much as 10,000. Live in alameda, anne makevoc, kpix 5. Danville kicked off the 4th this morning with this annual parade. [ applause ] organizeers estimate 40,000 people turned out to celebrate. Some even set out lawn chairs the nights before. Entry fees raise Community Organizations and to date they have brought in a Million Dollars. Crews are busy setting up for San Franciscos 4th of July Fireworks show tonight. Organizers promise it will be big. They will set off 10,000 shells from four barges. You can expect a lot of patriotic themes but also a surprise or two like something they say will look like a giant octopus and they always prepare for the fog. I do not pay a lot of attention to the weather in San Francisco as we all know here in the bay area, it can be foggy in San Francisco. We always hope for clear skies nice weather. And we have some effects that will perform at different altitudes so that if there is some fog that comes in, we can still see the show and enjoy it. The show starts at 9 30 tonight with prime viewing from aquatic park. Authorities in the south bay are cracking down on illegal fireworks this weekend. Extra Santa Clara County sheriffs deputies will patrol unincorporated areas and four of them have training as bomb technicians. In san jose, police are doing high visibility patrols. Firefighters are making steady progress against a wildfire in napa and lake counties. The butts fire is 55 contained, up from 30 a day ago. Its burned 4300 acres and destroyed two homes. More than 1700 firefighters are still working on the fire. All evacuation orders for residents have been lifted. The fire zone is located off butts canyon road in pope valley northwest of lake berryessa. To the south, a smaller fire in San Diego County is now 40 contained. The banner fire has destroyed two homes and blackened more than 200 acres. Its still threatening hundreds more homes and has forced the cancellation of a 4th of july parade in the Historic Town of julian. About 330 firefighters are working on this fire. Some people in san jose are spending their Independence DayGathering Signatures to change marijuana policy. The petitions are an earth to overturn new medical effort to overturn new medical pot rules. The rules are set to take effect later this month. By putting regulations in place that make it impossible for clubs to operate, they are going to force us to do another referendum. The federal government says we have to have a strong and effective regulatory system if we are going to allow Medicinal Marijuana and thats what we have adopted. 50,000 signatures are needed to put a referendum on the ballot. The clubs hope to raise a Million Dollars for the effort. An oakland house goes up in flames and termites may be indirectly to blame. Neighbors heard a loud explosion right before a house on Brighton Avenue started burning. That was about 8 00 last night. The blast rocked an area just off interstate 580 near 14th avenue. Boom a loud boom. The whole house shook. You can see the flames went up about 10 feet. 6 people who lived in the building had to evacuate and a dog and cat were rescued from the home that burned. Investigators say the fire may have started because the owner was using propane to kill termites. New at noon, california Highway Patrol is investigating accusations of Excessive Force after cell phone video captured an officer punching a woman. We want to warn you, this is hard to watch. Cell phone video shows the chp officer walking up to the woman alongside a los angeles freeway trying to detain her. After a struggle, he punches her more than 11 times while on the ground. A plainclothes officer comes up to assist and handcuffing the woman. Chp says they are aware of the video and are looking into it. Foster farms is recalling chicken from its fresno facility because of salmonella poisoning. Hundreds of people have gotten sick over the last 16 months. The government held off on issuing a recall until a direct link was found between the poultry and the illness. The recall covers products with dates between march 21 and 29. Joey chestnut put away 61 hot dogs in 10 minutes in the annual nathans hot dogeating contest in new york. He fell short of his 69 dogs last year but has now won eight years in a row. There was an upset in the Womens Division when [ non english language ] of las vegas beat defending champion sonya black widow thomas. And today was very significant for would Joey Chestnut for another. Shortly before the competition he proposed on stage to his girlfriend who of course said yes and she is a fellow competitive eater. A drenched east coast is just now coming out of the clear after a hurricane slammed the area overnight. An update on hurricane arthur and where its headed next. A secret psychological experiment. We are going to take a closer look at arthur and will that fog ruin your fireworks displays . Well talk about that coming up. ,,,,,,,, the first hurricane of the hurricane arthur has put a damper on 4th of july celebrations on the east coast. The first hurricane of the season made landfall late last night in North Carolina. As cbs Susan Mcginnis reports, the storm is now headed north but heavy rainfall is still pounding the area. Reporter the surf is still rug in nags head North Carolina after hurricane arthur flew through. It was pretty scary. You could hear the wind and rain hitting the side of the house. Reporter arthur made landfall on North Carolinas outerbanks as a category 2 hurricane. The storm delivered 100mile perhour winds and heavy rains causing flooding and leaving tens of thousands without power. There have been no casualties or serious injuries reported. And that was our number one goal. So that puts a big smile on all our faces. Reporter 250,000 people were expected to fill the outerbanks for the holiday weekend. But thousands ended up evacuating. Their plans cut short by arthur. A suspected tornado touched down in North Carolina. All of a sudden i heard the wind blow real hard. Heading to the bathroom, the ceiling was just collapsed behind us. Reporter authorities are warning swimmers to be careful of possible riptides as North Carolinas beaches reopen. Arthur is on the move but the main threat is heavy rain as it travels north dampening 4th of july festivities along the east coast. Susan mcginnis, cbs news, nags head, North Carolina. Arthur is the first hurricane to make landfall in the United States since Hurricane Sandy back in 2012. Authorities in brazil are trying to figure out what caused an unfinished overpass to fall killing two people. At least 19 others were hurt. It happened in Belo Horizonte near sao paulo. It fell on a car. Construction on many roads and airports of brazil were not completed in time for the world cup. New details this noon. The ntsb says a plane that crashed in livermore last month pitched suddenly after takeoff and was smoking before the pilot fell from the cockpit. The preliminary report found the plane was only 1,000 feet above ground before it spiraled to the ground. The pilot, 63yearold gerry parker, fell from the cockpit. The ntsb says no cause of smoke has been identified. Californiabased Corinthian Colleges will put 85 campuses up for sale and close 12 others. The forprofit Company ProvidesVocational Training to about 72,000 students in 26 states including in the bay area. But its faced accusations of falsifying job placement data and altering grades. Corinthian reached a deal late yesterday with education officials aimed at keeping federal aid dollars flowing in. New at noon, facebook has a new problem from its secret psychological experiment on nearly 700,000 users. The Consumer Privacy group has filed a complaint with the federal trade commission. It accuses facebook of breaking the law by not informing users or seeking their consent. The Electronic Privacy Information Center calls this a deceptive trade practice. Back in 2012, facebook manipulated the amount of negative or positive content in news feeds, then monitored individual posts. That is trending now and 4th of july of course. The allimportant forecast for the 4th of july. Yes, a very, very important forecast. Very stressful. You know . That fog, everybody for you, yes. Yes, for me because we want to get this forecast right. Folks, likes like things are going to work out pretty well in most spots. There is a major storm on east coast ruining 4th of july plans. Thats hurricane arthur. Looks like its pulling away from the coastline after making landfall in the carolinas earlier this morning now moving away a bit but still sustained winds of 90 Miles Per Hour category 1 hurricane. It is 125 miles eastsoutheast of Atlantic City right now. So they are seeing some of those rain bands pushing into new york. It is going to continue to rain along the coastline up through boston right in through new england on into the weekend. So a very, very messy 4th of july there. Here we are watching this. The low clouds and fog near the coastline, that will be pushing back onshore a little later on. Temperatures though in the valleys really starting to heat up in a hurry. 86 degrees now in livermore. It is 79 in concord. But a cool 61 in San Francisco. High pressure now taking over and building in. That is going to help to warm up the temperatures a few degrees today. Then low clouds and fog returning again this evening. But getting hot over the weekend as that High Pressure system really is going to strengthen. So as that ridge strengthens well see warm temperatures away from the coastline for today. Low clouds and fog going to surge onshore. Some of that making its way right into the bay right at the fireworks time so we are expecting some fog into San Francisco and through some of the mountain gaps. Mostly clear inland though. And then as we take you into tomorrow morning, well see a couple of clouds out there, as well. Temperatures around the bay area today, we have some 80s into much of the south bay, you will see some 70s around the bay and even 80s and 90s well inland. Inside the bay you will see numbers 60s as you head in toward alameda and San Francisco. And your sunset time for tonight is at 8 35. Your sunrise is at 5 54 tomorrow. And as we look out over the next couple of days, we are going to see those temperatures soaring into the 90s maybe even some triple digits as we head in toward monday and tuesday. But it looks like the fireworks display tonight, michelle, as long as youre not right in San Francisco, we are going to be able to see that. Chris wondolowski back with his teammates today. He said he had a great time at the world cup. He is still trying to process everything that happened and he is still thinking about that missed goal seen around the world. Its painful but take a look at it again if you were watching the game you remember this well against belgium. You probably saw this juan doe took a pass a little too high what could have been a goal that kept the u. S. In the tournament did not happen belgium won the game 21. Here were wondolowskis reflections on that short just a short time ago. Yeah, definitely think about that. I think about its one of those where it happens striker you miss some uhm, you know, it hurts just on that stage uhm, you know, im great to feel have great teammates and family to have the support, you know, uhm but its one of the things i know thats going to make me stronger both on and off the field. He and the teammates with the earthquakes ran practice drills for a few hours at the practice facility next to the san jose airport. He says he is very focused on getting back with the team at this point getting on to the teams next game against washington but says he thinks about that missed shot every day and feels he let down his teammates but at the same time he is very philosophical about it. He recognizes that in sports in these positions, you know, you make some and you dont make some. Its unfortunate that he didnt make one on this big stage bus he is trying to learn from it and take what he learned to become a better player and person. Joanne was born in march. Right now mom and baby spend a lot of time together with joanne clinging to her mothers back. Joanne was born by csection. The first one done on a mother gorilla at the park. The newborn had to undergo emergency surgery for a collapsed lung and pneumonia treatment but zoo Officials Say the young gorilla is now very healthy and developing on track.
