All southbound lanes are closed from 4th and king streets past mariposa street to the pennsylvania avenue on ramp. The closure continues all weekend allowing time to replace a crucial hinge on that elevated roadway. Kpix 5s cate caugiran has been following caltrains progress all morning and joins us from the work site a normally busy stretch of roadway now devoid of cars. Reporter yes, michelle. Its always eerie standing in the middle of the highway without any cars on it. Typically, on southbound 280 theres usually about 60,000 cars but if you take a look now its just caltrans workers. Sorry workers have been at it overnight trying to replace a bridge hinge. The purpose is to make roads safer in an earthquake. Caltrain gave us this up close look at the project. They have to shut down all lanes because to get to the hick they have to take out part of the freeway. They have to demolish the concrete because the hinges are embedded in that concrete. And then they pour the concrete over the hinges. Reporter caltrans knows this will mean dust and noise for neighbors plus more cars on side streets. They are asking the public to be patient and to plan ahead. Now, after the work that you see out here live, they still have to replace three more hinges. And those are going to be on the northbound side of 280 but dont worry, that construction isnt set for the 4th of july weekend and labor day weekend. Cate caugiran, kpix 5. Last year the tag rip tommy stayed on the green bridge for months but now its been a year and it is spotless. Whats going on . Of the 40something bridges that caltrain owns, this one is the most secure and most fortified of them all making it the fort knox of railroad bridges. Thats because theres not just one or two but three fences to climb each one riskier than the last. Were hoping that this is a significant disincentive for anyone who might be looking to become a graffiti artist. Reporter that beefy third fence is key in keeping taggers off the catwalk. You will see some 70s and 80s inside the bay and maybe upper 80s in the warmest valleys. As we look toward the next couple of days, temperatures heating up. Some 90s inland. And then as we head toward memorial day, it is looking good. Plenty of sunshine coming our way and temperatures, well, 60s near the coastline, still some 80s in the valleys. Well, spring is here and the fox tails are out which means your pets need a little more protection. They are plants which grow a seed head with barbs on them. When they break apart in the dry weather they can be inhaled or go into different parts of dogs and cats and cause a problem. And the more they go they go in the nose and ears . Right. They look like weed heads. We find them really frequently in ears and eyes and in noses. And in the tows and also they cause abscesses in other parts of the body. How do we know in a dog or cat has one . If its in the ears the dogs can be shaking their heads violentry. We see it in the eyes of dogs and cats. They will squint intensely. Eyes can look glued shut. It hurts . It does. With the feet they get abscesses and boils in the toes and thats one of the other common presentations. You have to get it out with tweezers . We have a very specialized instrument called alligator forceps and we go and get those out. I bet quite a trick. I bet the dogs and cats love it once its out. Okay. Protect your pet. Youre out in the back bush or whatever or just walking your dog and you go through some of these weeds. They are everywhere. I think you can see them on the sidewalks in san francisco. You can find them all over the east bay hills. And even in san francisco. So the best thing to do is to try to avoid them. But thats not always practical. With dogs, theres a new methodology to keep them from getting into your dogs face and its called an out fox field guard. Its a finance thing. We call them the nook. They dont see these in alaska but its a little mesh thing that goes over their head and prevents them from getting them in their eyes and their nose and in their mouths and ears. Are the dogs cool with that . They look like little bee keepers. I tried one on cowboy and all he cared about was the treats. It seemed to work. They can breathe .
