The fire threatens 4500 structures and the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, the main source of clean water for the city of San Francisco. Just within the past 20 minutes or so, Governor Brown toured a cal fire staging area, saw how crews are battling the rim fire. He said the state will need more federal resources to get the job done. Californias got real talent and a very expert team to fight fires. But it takes money and it takes more money before we get finished and we are going to have the president probably to pitch in some more before the season is over. The governor said he is also closely monitoring the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir which supplies Drinking Water and power to San Francisco and other parts of the bay area. More on that in a moment. I spoke with several firefighters only front lines and they say that while they hope to have a majority of this Massive Wildfire contained over the next several days, it could parts of it could continue to burn on for months. As wildfires go this one is epic. Giant trees that have been growing for 2,000 years know now being threatened by flames that have been charred an area the size of chicago. Also in danger, thousands of homes and businesses. Firefighters say strong winds, dry conditions and rugged terrain make this an extremely different wildfire to control. Everything burns. And with intensity. Reporter the socalled rim fire is burning in and around Yosemite National park, an area Abraham Lincoln designated for protection nearly 150 years ago. More than 3. 5 Million People visit yosemite every year, with big crowds typically around labor day. The outofcontrol fire has already left the park badly scarred. To protect the giant sequoias, they are using sprinklers. Ash is falling in a reservoir that supplies much of San Francisco water. It hasnt affected Water Quality yet, but some generators that rely on the reservoir to power the city have been shut down. And while a vast majority of Yosemite National park remains open, frank, about 200 of the 1500 camping sites are now closed. Okay. Why arent Yosemite Park officials as concerned with the fire pushing to the Northwest Side of the park . Its still open for business, right . Reporter it still is. If anything, a lot of those campsites were actually closed down because of thick smoke. It wasnt necessarily the flames. But one of the reasons that theyre not as concerned for that section of the fire is really because of some of the forests own Natural Resources protecting itself. As the fire continues to push northwest into the park, its actually being greeted by rock and granite which is obviously not fuel for the fire as opposed to some of the dry brush that its got to already. The flames are edging closer to the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir and ashes have already fallen there. Officials say so far the water is safe and theres no change to quality or delivery from the reservoir. It supplies some 85 of the citys water as well as power for municipal buildings. The airport in San Francisco general hospital, as well. The fire burned through a camp owned by one bay area city. This is what the Berkeley Tuolumne family camp near groveland used to look like. Its been in operation since 1922. Firefighters have not been able to gain access to the damage so its not known at this hour if any structures are still intact there. Some other camps also under threat include San Francisco camp mather, where firefighters are on standby for structural defense and camp tawonga where one building already burned down, and san jose family camp. The u. S. Forest service says so far the ucberkeley lair of the bear is not in danger. Switching gears, the bay bridge will shut down in two days at 8 00 wednesday night and reopen the morning of september 3. So make sure you plan accordingly over the Holiday Weekend. They are telling us where were going to go live, where we will be able to set up, because it doesnt matter if you are media or commuter on that day, it will be a mess navigating around that closure. In the meantime, we are counting down to the bridge closure and the opening of the new eastern span. Caltrans and chp are both doing their best to get that. Were at as you mentioned wednesday at 8 p. M. , the bay bridge will shut down for five days. I just spoke with the chp officer who says drivers should expect to see those rolling traffic breaks. That means chp cars driving across all lanes to slow down and redirect traffic on wednesday. Another update is regarding the new span of the bridge. Its more bolt testing. The San Francisco chronicle reported there have been tests of the other bolts on the bay bridge going on over the past month. And engineers say everything appears to be going well. These tests were ordered after the infamous 32 bolts broke ban in march. Fremont police are warning residents about a scam where burglars pose as animal control officers looking for snakes. A victim tells officers that a woman came to her home on moore drive on saturday and said she was searching for poisonous snakes. She said she needed to take measurements of the backyard and insisted everyone in the home go into the yard then a man came inside and stole cash and jewels. Well, it is scary. I mean, things are because of the economy everyone is really resorting to all kinds of tricks to get people to, you know, give them money or come in and rob them. Police are searching for suspects that left shell casings a trail of blood on a party bus in San Francisco. Checking some other bay area headlines now on this monday afternoon, Stinson Beach is back open for business after a shark sighting last week promised a fiveday closure prompted a fiveday closure of the beach. A great white shark appeared in waist deep water last month. No more sightings so the beach was reopened sunday. 30,000 young people are getting free rides on muni. Just months into the Pilot Program for low income youth many are already hailing it a big success. The program will be evaluated when it runs out next summer and could potentially be extended. Its open to children ages 5 to 17. San jose could soon become the largest city in california to ban styrofoam food containers. The city council will take up an ordinance tomorrow.
