Our inboxes were flooded with people sharing video and pictures of last nights lightning. Meteorologist lawrence says we could see the same thing later. Lightning may have fuelled a wildfire burning out of control. Yeah, whats interesting is were getting the lightning but not seeing the rain. Thats why we call it dry lightning. That can cause problems with the fires sparked around the bay area. These shots coming from hayward looking back toward the peninsula. You can see numerous lightning strikes. When we added up all the lightning strikes, there were thousands of strikes overnight. Were not done just yet. Could very well see lightning. You see thousands of strikes even off the coastline. But just the end of this loop here youll see the satellite and radar come on. A few more lightning strikes giving you an idea we could see more thunderstorms. Red flag warnings over the mountain tops. More on your weather in a few minutes. Lightning may have fuelled a wildfire in the outskirts of Yosemite National park. Started on saturday and destroyed two homes and forced the evacuation of buck meadows. It has grown to 15 square miles forcing the closure of highway 120 on the west side of the park. There is zero percent containment. Firefighters are dealing with steep rugged terrain. The american fire has scorched nearly 15,000 acres just northeast of forest hill. Nearly 2,000 firefighters are on the front lines. Have it about half contained. Some of the areas have not burned in more than a century. There is plenty of fuel in that area. Evacuation orders and warnings are lifted for people in butte county. Earlier many of their homes had been threatened by the swedes fire. Firefighters have that 75 contained. As you can take a look now, its completely empty. Two weeks from now, it will be filled with cars. As you take a look, there is striping here on the roadway. And indicators this bridge over here to my right is close to retirement. Cal trans says the shims are on. Thats the temporary fix put in place to stabilize the broken bolts until the permanent saddles are put in place. Now that thats complete, its a matter of paving, striping roadways and shifting barriers. Still a lot of work to do after the bridge opens. Cal trans says they will have to demolish the westbound approach and work on that new bike path. Meanwhile, still the issue of the contractor american bridge floor. They were the ones who installed the fix making way for ontime opening and 20 million bonus. State leaders dont believe they deserve it. A state audit found the same contractor may be to blame for the cracked bolts in the first place. As they get ready for that big labor day opening, cal trans has yet to decide if the contractor will get the bonus. Still no word yet on what that final decision is.
