Mallicoat. Mannheim juliette goodrich. Michelle griego is off. First, we start with developing news in the south bay. A s. W. A. T. Around 8 00, the suspect called police saying he had killed someone inside a home on cociella avenue. Officers surrounded the home for two hours shouting through bull horns and calling on the man to surrender. Police shot and killed the suspect when he charged at them with a weapon. The s. W. A. T. Team approached the residence, attempted to make contact with the individual inside the residence. At that point, the individual charged the officers with a weapon and they were forced to open fire and shoot the individual. Then police went inside the home and found a womans body. They are not releasing her identity at this time or details about how she was killed. Neighbors who heard the commotion are still shaken up. We never had this happen around this neighborhood here before. Its a quiet town. Police evacuated nearby homes. Well have more details on this story later tonight on kpix 5 news at 5 00. Now lets get back to the wildfire in southern california. Bigad shaban joins us from the front lines. Whats the latest . Reporter frank, good to be with you. Were about 90 miles east of los angeles and the smoke here as you can see behind me is taking over much of the horizon. The fire has at least injured five people, four of them firefighters. Fastmoving flames are scorching dry brush as a Massive Wildfire rips through the San Jacinto Mountains east of los angeles. On one side the flames are bearing down on buildings and houses. 6,000 acres, no containment reporter since wednesday afternoon, the fire has destroyed at least 15 structures including several homes. We have tried to get out. Reporter sherry is one of 1500 evacuees. Im hoping that my house is still okay because we left and the fire was just right there. Reporter the smoke stretches for miles across these mountain ridges. Firefighters are concerned the unpredictable winds with push the flames toward even more houses. One homeowner used a garden hose to fight the flames. About 1,000 firefighters are on the ground battling the blaze. Authorities dont know how the wildfire started. They do know it grew out of control fast. Within the first three hours, we were over 2500 acres. Reporter officials are now fighting the fire from the air using planes and helicopters to drop fire retardant and water on the blaze. And with the wildfire spreading so quickly, firefighters are struggling to get the upper hand, with currently only 10 contained. Bigad, do we know how widespread the fire is right now . Reporter yeah. It certainly has increased exponentially since it began yesterday. But the latest estimates were hearing are that at least 10,000 acres have been burned. Thats a lot in 24 hours. Bigad shaban in riverside county, thank you. Bart negotiations resume today. Lets take a look at how we got to this point. Both sides missed the contract deadline on june 30. A second led line of august 4, they missed that, as well. Kpix 5s anne makovec in oakland with where they stand today. Reporter still very far apart, juliette. They are negotiating as we speak this afternoon here in downtown oakland. Theres still the possibility of a bart strike as soon as monday. If that were to happen the union would likely give a 72 hour notice which in that case would have to come as soon as tonight. In the meantime, rhetoric is flying. They are coming after and they want us to work like my ancestors worked in the cotton fields. Reporter thats a man with the Faith Alliance for moral economy to rally Union Workers outside a bart meeting before they headed into negotiations this morning. There are three possible outcomes that could avoid a strike on monday, a contract agreement, a contract extension, or a coolingoff period which bart is requesting from the governor. You have to be at the table across from them and talking about it. Standing there and saying reject reject is just not cutting it. Reporter a bart spokesman expressed tentative confidence this morning. Theres a lot on the table but this doesnt mean we cant get there by sunday night. Everyone is working tirelessly to get there before sunday night. Reporter but whats on the table depends on which side youre talking to. Management says its latest proposal would cause 18 million and that the unions plan would cost 118 million, a 100 million difference. The unions say thats not true. Its more like a 56 million difference. So the odds of coming to an actual longstanding contract agreement before that sunday deadline, not good. So for bart riders, the best option is for them to come up with some sort of extension that will allow them to continue negotiating while the trains hopefully keep rolling. Keep those trains rolling. So how likely is the possibility of the governor offering this coolingoff period . Reporter that seems to be the most likely possibility right now. And in fact, if you look at history, the last five times that governors have ordered these panels to discuss a coolingoff period, they have ended up Going Forward with those agreements. All right. Well stay on top of this. Anne makovec, thank you. Violent home robbery in the north bay has residents on edge. The suspects got inside one home posing as utility workers. Kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran with neighbors who are now trying to watch out for one another. Reporter Vallejo Police are warning neighbors, be careful who you open the door for. I live in vallejo and i love vallejo but things like that happen frequently. I just never thought it would be that kind of crime. Reporter yesterday morning, two men posing as pg e workers knocked on a home on the 1400 block of farrell street. They told the family they needed to check a gas leak. On appearance things looked okay so the family let them in. Vallejo police said then the suspects got violent. They pistolwhipped the man and tied up the family including a 6yearold child. The degree of the crime this time i have never heard of a kidnapping of the whole family for probably what was not even that much money or not much valuables. So its really sad. Reporter police say the man did what he could giving the robbers all of their money to get them to leave. Lieutenant dejesus says investigators have seen this type of crime two times before. Were treating these robberies individually. Were not at this point willing to tie all these together until we have anything conclusive that would lead us to believe that they are associated. Reporter now neighbors are not taking this lightly. This neighbor says Everyone Needs to step up. We have to look out for each other. Thats the only thing we have to do. We have to do a better job of looking over each others backs. Reporter if you arent expecting service, call the company they claim to represent and do more than just check for an identification because that could be fake too. In vallejo, cate caugiran, kpix 5.
