Reporter the may 23rd Armed Robbery on batton way was one of four robberies in the evergreen neighborhood in the last week and its one of nine armed or strongarmed robberies to hit the area in the past month including this Home Invasion robbery that was captured on video may 8. The two intruders armed with knives terrorized a family hiding in a bedroom. We get certain spikes in certain crimes in certain areas. City. And again we a in certain areas of the city. And again we address those by reaching out to the community and listening to their concerns. Reporter two suspects were arrested in the Home Invasion robberies. Extra robberies and suppression cars are now in evergreen to fight the rise in crime. They are basically responsible for saturating a certain area where these crime trends are occurring. And then they go ahead and they will do proactive enforcement. Reporter aside from the recent spike in robberies in this neighborhood, police say that robberies are actually down citywide during the first four months of this year. But that doesnt make people here feel any better, in fact it may make them feel more targeted. In san jose, len ramirez, kpix 5. Neighbors in the evergreen area have launched an online petition. They want the District Attorneys Office to go after the suspects in the may 8 Home Invasion robbery. New at 6 00 police have just released the mugshot of the man behind a dramatic gas station standoff. He is 35yearold Horatio Gutierrez surrendering after three hours yesterday after holding hostages. Esophageae he is facing a number of charges and is wanted for carjacking. Kpix 5s da lin has the inside story about how the two hostages survived their encounter with gutierrez. Reporter this door is mostly glass and with rooftop snipers positioned outside in the surrounding area, the gunman held the store owner and the store manager hostage inside this tiny room in here. And you can see this tiny room its about 3 to 4 feet wide and 8 feet long. He was not dangerous to us. Reporter the gas station owner, [ nonenglish language ] , known as Johnny Carson treated the suspect as an honored guest with food and drinks in return he says the gunman showed him respect and acted like a gentleman. All three men were holed up in a small window less office as snipers and tactical officers pointed their rifles at the station. The two hostages at one point tried to escape but failed. The gunman eventually released them and surrendered. He never threatened me with the revolver. He was holding it all the time. But he never pointed the gun to me. When he was ready to come you he said, can you give me a cigarette . So he lighted the cigarette. Reporter while they were inside the station, he says the suspect was smoking weed and appeared to be under the influence of some other type of drug, as well. Jack asked the gunman why he did what he did. But he says the gunman didnt give an answer. Even though jack says the gunman acted like a gentleman, today all the gas station customers are saying that with his suspenders and all, jack is the true gentleman. It is allowed in california but now theres a move to make it legal formally. Kelly ryan reports. Reporter you see it all the time check it out in this Youtube Video motorcyclists lane splitting riding between lanes of stopped or moving traffic. Now a bill could make it legal. I think it would slow traffic better. Its a good way to get congestion down. Reporter the American Motorcyclist Association is calling for less restrictive rules. Many riders say lane splitting is safer than sitting behind cars who cant always see you. They see you moving. When youre still they are looking for another windshield and dashboard not a motorcycle. Reporter the measure would allow them to ride between cars at speeds up to 15 Miles Per Hour faster than the flow of traffic. Up to 50 Miles Per Hour. So how would this law change the Current Situation . The bill under construction would give guidelines for riders to follow with agencies enforcing them. The california Highway Patrol says it cant comment on pending legislation. But in the past, the chp and dmv posted guidelines on lane splitting. They were removed after opponents complained the agencies were endorsing the practice. Lane splitting isnt illegal and riders we spoke with say police wont pull you over for doing it. But you will be cited if your lane splitting involves unsafe speeds which could lead to a dangerous ride. Other states have considered lane splitting laws but nothing passed. California would be the first. Kelly ryan, kpix 5. California could be the first state to green light lane splitting. San franciscos Mission Bay Neighborhood is becoming a hot spot. Uber has become the latest company that wants to park its new headquarters there. Allen, its a pretty impressive campus they are planning to build there. Reporter yeah. It would be. Uber wants to get this thing open possibly by the end of 2017 no later than 2018. Right now, doesnt look like much. Uber though has a blank slate to build on. The campus will go on the empty lot on 3rd street actually would consist of two buildings. This land belonged to salesforce. But salesforce decided to stay in the south of market neighborhood so that old the door for uber to come in. Now, the company sent out pictures of the design today. This is not approved. But look at all that glass. Now, there would be a bridge to link the two buildings. It would also have a path for pedestrians, potentially some space for shops on the lower level. New video shows a heartless vandal caught in the act damaging a public art sculpture. Surveillance video shows the suspect carving into the blue fiberglass heart that stands outside the South San Francisco center. The video is from last month. This is what it looks like now. Its not clear what was scratched into the sculpture. If you have any information on the suspect, you can call the south city police. Also, in South San Francisco, a police car collided into a fire hydrant sending water flying into the sky. The Police Officer wasnt hurt. South San Francisco firefighters arrived shortly after and shut off the hydrant. Soccer fans have their eyes on avaya stadium in san jose next year. They will host the 2016 all star game. The president of Major League Soccer made the announcement today at avaya stadium. Home of the san jose earthquakes. The game will feature the best players in the country against its Top International team. It takes place next summer. No date has been set. New details released today about the plans for super bowl 50. We learned where the competing teams are going to practice before the game. One team will work out at Spartan Stadium at san jose state. The other will use Stanford Stadium as home base. The players will stay in that area as well at the Marriott Hotel in santa clara. And the marriott in san jose. We want to reduce the amount of time that team spend on their bus going from the hotel to the practice site. We want to make it easy for the teams to get to the stadium on game day sunday. Hundreds of acres went up in plains in the east bay. Cal fire deployed its air tankers to stop the flames. Actually two fires combined into one large fire this afternoon near interstate 580 at the Altamont Pass. Kpix 5s maria medina on how it got started. Reporter a pretty close call for this big rig driver after his cab caught on fire. Cal fire saying they had a pretty busy afternoon here. We take a look at aerial shots of the first fire that happening at about 11 a. M. Near the Bethany Reservoir about 240 acres burned over there. And you can see firefighters protecting the wind farm over there. They say that wind farm is actually a challenge for them because it creates a lot of wind. But no damage or injuries to report there. The second fire happening nearby at about 2 30 where im standing right now. Firefighters say a big rig caught on fire. The grass nearby the flames spread over there quickly but firefighters say that once they got here, they are able to get those flames out pretty quickly. Heres what one firefighter had to say. The fire was moving pretty good with the wind. The drought has cured our fuel to alltime record lows and the grass is very tall and burning very well. Reporter firefighters say they were spread pretty thin today. The warmer temperature really pushing the flames today. They also had a fire in Santa Cruz County and those ask for help from different agencies in the air and on foot. But as dramatic as this big rig looks, they say no injuries or damage here, as well. In alameda county, maria medina, kpix 5. Brentwood is going to start fining people if they dont cut back on water use. The city council is asking customers to reduce their consumption by 35 . The penalty for only cutting back by 21 to 34 , 100 a month. Sear tro 20 it goes to up zero to 220 is 200. And the other fine is 300. The fines start in july. Im veronica de la cruz. This story dates back to last summer when Stanford University received a vial that could have had active anthrax inside. Kpix 5s Christian Hartnett on what the university was doing with the deadly toxin. Stanford is very secure. Theres no safety concern here. No threat. Reporter the spokesman insists everything is okay after the department of defense sent a vial with anthrax spores that may have been active last summer. The University Says two researchers opened the vial then but no one touched it since. Those researchers have no symptoms and neither has anyone else involved with the lab. So we are very comfortable that all is well here. Reporter the cdc will now test that vial along with similar vials sent to labs in nine states and a u. S. Air force base in south korea. The samples were accidentally shipped from one of its labs in utah. They were supposed to be inactive anthrax samples used for research in identifying biological threats. No known risk to the general public and no suspected or confirmed cases of anthrax infection. Reporter but the pentagon is concerned about lab workers that may have been exposed. At least four in the u. S. And 22 in south korea are taking antibiotics as precaution. Exposure to live spores can be deadly. After a short period of time the person can become very sick. Its largely a lung infection first of all. And you can get sick from the organism in the bloodstream.
