However, the county will do a mandatory manual tally of 1 of its ballots. A bay area deputy who once aspired to be sheriff is now facing criminal charges. He is accused in an elaborate jail smuggling operation. Kpix 5s linda yee tells us how Authorities Say the scheme worked. Reporter it seems that the Sheriffs Department in San Mateo County and the District Attorney got wind of this alleged criminal operation about a year ago, when they put three veteran officers under inspection, they followed them around, they discovered they were operating this criminal operation inside the county jail serving up contraband to an inmate who was a street gang member. Its an alleged scheme that involved smuggling in cell phones and drugs into the San Mateo County jail. The customers, an inmate who was a known gang member. The d. A. Says the smugglers were sheriffs Deputy Juan Lopez and jailers Michael Dell Carlo and George Ishmael all officers with the San Mateo CountySheriffs Department. Special officer ishmael is charged with bringing in oxycontin the drug were dealing with that was brought into our jail. Reporter investigators first learned of the alleged operation in 2013. All three officers were being watched but only delcarlo was placed on paid administrative leave. The d. A. Says allowing cell phones into jail is extremely dangerous. What they have determined in the state prison for instance the major gangs use the cell phones to control the activity on the street. Reporter even as the investigation progressed, deputy lopez ran for sheriff last june an election he lost. He was placed on administrative leave in july in an unrelated investigation involving fraud. Its just not a very good day but again, we are going to support the District Attorneys office and we are going to see where this thing goes. Reporter all three men have bailed out of jail. If they are convicted of the crimes, they could face up to 6 years in prison. And veronica, the d. A. Says he may not be over with this investigation yet. All right. Linda, thank you. Deputy juan lopez was among the best paid on the force. His total pay more than 243,000, almost half of that was overtime. Well, he said he was sorry and he apologized. Even so, the chp officer accused of stealing and sharing those nude photos of women he arrested is pleading not guilty. It appears to be part of a legal strategy for former officer sean harrington. He walked into a martinez courtroom with his attorney this morning. Harrington faces two felony Computer Theft charges. His attorney is trying to work out a plea deal one that would not include jail time. Um, i dont think this warrants actual custodial time. I think it may warrant some kind of a jail sentence and alternative sentencing. His Attorney Says the fact that harrington resigned and accepted responsibility should be taken into consideration. As you can see, what separates the two cities is a line on a wall. To characterize emeryville as an unsafe city would be an unfair characterization. Tesoro is ordered to pay 260,000 for 23 different violations in 2011. A san jose state Foundation Member has resigned over allegations she made derogatory comments about latinos. The controversy sparked a campus protest monday. Le school announced the resignation today. There is now a petition to get the Contra Costa County board of supervisors to take back the huge raise they gave themselves. Droste becomes the first openly gay member of the Berkeley City Council. Authorities say an explosion on campus at Vallejo High School may be connected to the napa earthquake. Documents we obtained from Law Enforcement agencies are heavily redacted. In this stack, we got from san jose police, the word stingray doesnt even come up. Its just referred to as Surveillance Technology equipment. The local police have been trying really hard to keep the public and policymakers and even judges completely in the dark.
