This new strategy will mean lane closures six nights a week for the next couple of months. Two separate big rig accidents caused a nightmare commute for bay area drivers in Santa Clara County a truck hauling dirt on southbound highway 101 overturned near alum rock avenue. The front tire of that big rig blew out causing it to slam into the Center Divider and flip on its side. It happened just after 1 p. M. Oil and dirt spilled over several lanes of traffic. San francisco low clouds covered the top of the transamerica building. First rain of the month brought pretty decent showers. Wet weather slowed this mornings commute of course. This time it seemed like people had to remember how to drive in the rain. Most routes were slower than a normal thursday. The wet weather exposing a problem that city workers are trying to solve. Kpix 5s Christian Hartnett with the Common Thread in each case the trouble involved aging ficus trees. Christian. Reporter ken, theres thousands of these trees all over right here and right here just on this stretchof potrero there are dozens. The city knows of the danger but as far as chopping them down, public works says its hands are full. They dont have the Resources Available to them to go around uprooting all these trees. It costs up to 1,000 to clear a ficus tree and the city has to replace it with a different tree. Public works says its reassessing its ficus tree policy which could speed up the process of removing more of them. So we want to do this smartly methodically. Thats why a policy is being drafted probably as we speak right now to see what kind of trees should we really be looking at for removal. We want to make sure that our urban forestry is strong and that it expands in San Francisco. Most of the ficus trees in San Francisco are 40 to 50 years old and are top heavy so the branches break easily. Public works says it has inspectors maintaining them and making sure they are not diseased or on the verge of losing branches but even so maintaining these trees is not guaranteed that they wont fall over. Just down the street here or potrero where the tree fell and pinned the man underneath, that tree was just maintained last month. Live in San Francisco, Christian Hartnett, kpix 5.
