They need to find someone or someplace to take care of her. We need something specialized, russian, jewish, something that she can feel comfortable in. He says a large scale construction project on the block has made it impossible for him and his neighbors to do business. He tells kpixs da lin theyre running out of time. Reporter hes wrestled a grizzly bear in his younger days as a charity stunt. More recently doctors diagnosed the 65 Business Owner with lou gehrigs disease. Hagens said nothing prepared him for the latest fight thats about to shut him down for good. The pain that bear caused me is nothing compared to the pain theyve caused him. Reporter he says his upholstery business is down 90 since cal trans and the Alameda County Transportation Commission shut down part of east 8th street in july to build a sound wall next to 880. This was how the street looked on google earth before the project. Easy access on and off the freeway. Now part of the street is gone. The other part has only one lane. And theres no more item pound. What theyve done to us is theyve basically cut us off. Reporter no parking, no supplied deliveries and no customer pickups and dropoffs. Cal trans posted this large sign banning commercial trucks from the area. Theyve even paved over his driveway. This was the hammer. This was the act. Reporter joe was now forced to meet with customers at this grocery parking lot six blocks away to pick up and drop off orders. He asked Alameda County for reimbursement, even recently met with the appeals board. If they were to give me a nice card saying hey, were sorry, and a dollar bill, thats more than ive got. Reporter other businesses like this gas station are also on the brink of closing down. The county paid the station 1. 5 million for its loss and relocation. He already laid off four workers. After we called the agency it did admit it was wrong to pave over the driveway and the agency says it will repave a driveway for joes business. Aside from hurting businesses, neighbors say crime has gone up since the construction project began. We showed you Surveillance Video in the first part of das story in our 5 00 news. A mob of 30 people breaking two coolers at a gas station on that stret then running off with the drinks. Neighbors say robberies, side shows and shootings in the area have gone up. They say all the road closures have isolated the area and people think they can get away with it. Cal trans says the project wont be complete until 2018. Another bay area city rocked by an earthquake today. People in gilroy felt a 3. 5 magnitude quake just after 9 a. M. The u. S. Geological survey says the epicenter was near the calaveras fault about 6 miles southeast of gilroy. There were no reports of damage. Napa quake victims needed food, water, and clothing. Now they need to figure out how to get their lives back. Mark kelly is live with how a new Health Center is promising to make that happen. The American Red Cross set up shop inside this Marriott Hotel in napa valley. A very different type of checkin here today. We just learned 75 families came through the doors here hoping the red cross could help them rebuild their homes and rebuild their lives. Reporter 1738 oak street was one mans castle. The antique furniture, chandeliers. Beautiful victorian home. Reporter robert tyler now needs to find a new place to live after the quake tilted his historic home. I lost everything in the quake. Reporter he came here today. The Red Cross Emergency Center in napa looking for help securing a new rental. Were offering our services and we encourage people to come in. Reporter ryan mcman with the red cross says his staff is refocusing their efforts toward longterm help like rebuilding homes along with physical and mental health. Mcmann says now in week 2, time has only brought new concerns. People who thought initially hey, my house held up okay, now theyre finding the damage and having to find alternate ways to support themselves. Reporter this room gives quake victims an actual person to talk to, someone to help fill out all the overwhelming paperwork. David augusta appreciates the personal attention and needs it. A recent injury keeps him from working and the quake left him and his home vulnerable. If i was still working, it wouldnt be a problem. Id have been able to replace the hot water heater and the damage. If you dont have a source of income, youre all shook up about it. Reporter the red cross is expecting 200 families to come here to help this week alone. As long as theres a need, were not going to leave anyone on the street. Were here to help. The red cross certainly busy. In addition to the new help center they just set up, they also have two shelters. One here in napa. Another here in vallejo. There are more people staying at those shelters now than the night of the quake. 40 families total. And thats because the red cross says theres more homes getting red tags. Mark kelly, kpix 5. Like mark was just saying, the help center is for all quake victims so theyve seen people from vallejo to get help as well. It wasnt fog. Parts of the bay area hazy today because of a fire burning 300 miles away. Smoke from a huge wildfire in siskew county is drifting. The fire has burned more than 62,000 acres. The fire started at the end of july. Were told it may not be contained for another week. A San Francisco lifeguard who went after a struggling swimmer ended up having to save himself. Matthew summoner had a terrible time getting back to shore after helping a swimmer. A surfer ended up rescuing that swimmer. In the meantime, sumner had to paddle down shore after getting caught in a rip current. He has some advice for anyone else who is thinking of swimming there. Definitely wear fins. Know where you are. Know what the water conditions are doing. Now that we have really strong rips, cold water, and people lose their lives here every year. Its not a joke. Sumner was clearly exhausted but otherwise he is okay. Were learning more tonight about what could be one of the most dangerous hangout spots in the bay area. The treacherous cliff just cost one man his life and nearly killed two more. Reporter the Fire Departments rescue operation to save three men at Palisades Park in daly city woke the neighborhood. When i woke up there was an ambulance here. There was Police Officers here. Reporter sometime around 4 a. M. Saturday, the three climbed over this fence. One of the men tells me they were trying to get to the beach. Problem is, theres a 300foot cliff in the way. They were climbing down when all three fell and one man died. One false slip and youre done. That sucks, man. Reporter neighbors say folks do it all the time. The fence is broken down in places. There are dozens of paths through the bushes all leading to the cliffs. Neighbors say folks have been coming out here for decades and they know its dangerous. Its a really nice view but its still cliffs and just be careful with what youre doing. Reporter along with firefighters, a coast guard helicopter joined in the rescue. Still not enough to save 28yearold sean carrington. He died on the beach. Thats pretty tragic. Thats very trag ic. Reporter the rescue operation lasted nearly five hours. The two survivors are being treated at San Francisco general hospital. Don ford, kpix 5. The two men who are injured are expected to be okay. Some San Francisco Hotel Workers who have been in a long struggle are flexing their muscle on this labor day. Workers marched near hyatt Fishermans Wharf to take their case to the public. They spent the last five years trying to get the management to recognize the need for a union. Really high rates of injury among house keepers. A lot of pressure, a lot of cutting of hours. Workers want to have Affordable Healthcare. Many other San Francisco Hotel Workers already have union representation. If you feel exhaustload the time exhausted all the time it may be because youre working more than you think you are. The average work week is closer to 47, about a full day extra. Half of all fulltime workers said they typically work more than 40 hours and 4 in 10 say they work at least 50. A lot more people in the bay area are working a lot more these days. Around the bay area all counties report more people working today than last year, and in some counties, San Francisco, san mateo, contra costa, solano, its the most ever. Historic. The number of employed residents in the bay area has grown by tens of thousands just in the last year. Reporter it sounds pretty good until you peel off some layers. I think it really speaks to the walmartization of jobs. Reporter jessica was at a labor day rally trying to get higher wages for Hotel Workers. Companies more and more are trying to figure out ways to employ many more parttime workers and take away fulltime jobs. Reporter that might come with benefits and healthcare. There are still a lot of good jobs out there. Ask jessica. She hears it from her techy friends who complain about salary negotiations. They were talking about they were low balling themselves at 160 instead of 180. Reporter as in hundreds of thousands of dollars. Even one of the highest minimum wages in the nation can produce a low quality of life. I have rent control. It will be easier because rent control is cheaper. You couldnt live without rent control. I dont think so. Heres the thing, everybody i talk to, they love their job here. They love their customers. They give them good tips. Thats one of the reasons they can live here in the bay area. Christine wants to be a reporter. You just cant make it on those salaries in the bay area these days. You double up, get roommates, three, two. Five, eight. There will not be a chance of rainfall for the next seven days. This ridge will be moving. This is the guy that gave us the hot weather. It gets shoved off to the south and east. No rainfall for us but its going to change the wind direction. We go back to an onshore flow. Very cold water relatively speaking. We grab the influence from it. That begins as soon as tomorrow. It will be 15 degrees cooler tomorrow away from the water compared to today. Not 100. Instead the mid 80s and once temperatures go down theyll stay down for the rest of the week. Rose turned to her computer. We have so much innovation and new technology and we have so much compassion. I know people want to help. Reporter with her background in technology, she started a website called hand up which gives the homeless a place to tell their stories and what they need to get back on their feet. On your way to work every day, you walk right past her. Yeah. It is a big contrast. But it mote motivates us. Reporter motivates her to help people like janelle mitchell, who at her lowest was living in her car. You feel embarrassed even to look your child in the face and say we dont have anywhere to stay. Reporter a local nonprofit secured an apartment for janelle and her two kids. But to succeed, to rise above poverty, she wanted an education, hoping to become an urban planner. She came to fundraise for a laptop. Imagine going through School Without a computer these days. Almost impossible. Reporter less than 24 hours after janelle appealed for a laptop my goal had been met plus more. So i was like oh, my god, are you serious . Reporter the homeless and their needs are vetted through Charity Organizations and case workers manage the donations. She says those who receive aid are saved the embarrassment of having to beg. I feel this is a dignified way they can ask for help. Reporter but it also left some of them wondering, who are some of these people helping us . How can we thank them . Storing photos and documents in the clouds is convenient but clearly comes with security risks. Something stars like Jennifer Lawrence and kate upton learned the hard way when their nude photos were reportedly accessed from cloud photos linked to their phones. More than 100 celebrities are part of the listed hack. Posts on the website 4chan and reddit say celebrities were exposed when a hacker broke in to their cloudbased storage. Many are pointing a finger at apples icloud which reportedly fixed a problem today, but any Cloud Storage system is vulnerable. Someone can hack just about any service. Hacking isnt the only thing you need to consider. If you make your material available to a third party, that means it could be subjected to Something Like a subpoena if youre involved in a marital dispute or other kind of dispute or perhaps the government is investigating you. Its important to remember that anything uploaded to the cloud could presumably be there forever, even if you delete it and depending on your settings, your smart phone could be automatically uploading your information. Knowing this, hackers often target cloud servers using software to figure out user names and emails which then allow them to access your data. To better protect yourself use different passwords for different accounts, check your privacy settings often and consider opting out of cloud sharing. Head to kpix. They didnt have a logical explanation for possessing the property other than to say it was theirs. Reporter crooks often come in to Mountain View from all over the south bay to sell stolen jewelry because no one checks their i. D. S. Resellers are supposed to fill out this form and document the sellers name, date of birth and thumb print. The problem was no one was filling out the paperwork. So detective tim minor said that was a problem and convinced city leaders to start charging a 500 fine. I hope our efforts here will reduce crimes in other jurisdictions as well as in Mountain View if people know theres no place to sell your stolen property. This allows the store to identify the seller of the property and most bad guys dont want to be identified. We never thought we seed it again. And now youre holding them. The bad guys nab the stolen goods recovered though it is difficult to trace and return them to the original owner. But in this case, the detectives just couldnt let go. It turned on so i was like okay, great. Now we can look. Reporter they were looking at pictures on a stolen camera. I started thumbing through it, it was apparent it was a camera that was special. There was photographs of a funeral. This didnt appear a selfie. This appeared to be something youre going to keep for 40, 50 years, for the rest of your life. We got to find out who this belongs to. Reporter but how . They had no name, only these images. I started flipping through the pictures, i noticed a wall, just a brown wall. Thats when i said i think i know where this is at. Lets go there. How do you remember a beige wall though . Its just something that i saw at one time and it stood in my memory bank and i saw the picture, i correlated my previous memory with the picture i saw and brought us here. Reporter they were parked outside dave laceys house. It was ericas camera that was stolen with the images that had not been backed up on a computer. She was an amateur photographer, a hobby to fill those days as she fought large b cell nonhodgkins lymphoma. That was his wife. Those were the last moments he had with his wife. I thought it was a joke at first, to be honest. I had given up all thought of recovery. Reporter it had been a year since the camera was stolen, and somehow the burglars, the pawnshop, no one erased those precious images. I almost feel like someone was watching out for me. Just to get it back. The burglars pleaded guilty. One was sent enced to 120 days in jail and three years probation. The other was sentenced to 30 days in jail. Seems like they should have gotten more than that. Wow, hes lucky to get those back. Still ahead, stretching vacation season in to the fall.
