In San Francisco, two workers rushed to the hospital after scaffolding they were working on collapsed. Chopper 5 gave us a look at some of the metal that came crashing down. The men were building the scaffolding at a construction site in the south of market neighborhood. Both men fell at least 30 feet. They were said to have life threatening injuries. New at 6 00 a former San Francisco State University student being investigated by antiterrorism officials and the fbi. He allegedly wrote social media posts that included serious threats of violence. Kpix 5s ryan takeo joins us live with a look at the graphic threats and why some are saying the posts are taken out of context. Reporter hi, ken. Reporter this group combats College Campus antisemitism. They tracked his postings and sent them to sf state administrators and local authorities. Were very concerned. We were concerned for the safety of students at San Francisco state and especially concerned for the safety of jewish students. Reporter today the school confirmed he is no longer a student but they wont say why. Huh mad was president of the General Union of palestinian students. One student in the group refused to do an interview fearful for her safety and possible retaliation. Another Student Group came to hammads defense saying he was passionate opposing colonialism and not jews. In fact all they are promote something anticolonialism and promoting their homeland. Reporter this fellow student said he was not threatened. He is not a threat to other people. They are completely peaceful and they just want to promote they are using their free speech and promoting it and saying what they really feel. Im a big supporter of free speech and academic freedom. But but the safety of students on a campus comes first. Reporter the fbi says they interviewed the student and believe that he is not a National Security threat. Sfpd is still investigating. A petaluma slaughterhouse under investigation for selling tainted beef may have a new owner and back in business after a massive recall. Our betty yu had been on the story and has an update. Reporter Rancho Feeding Corporation in petaluma shut down after the feds uncovered meat that was unfit for humans caught up in all of this chaos some highend meat producers whose livelihoods are now threatened. Tara smith showed us the damage 30 boxes of frozen beef put on hold part of a massive nationwide recall. It doesnt make any sense. Reporter because the cows on her small ranch in Sonoma County are grassfed and as healthy as can be. The thing about Grassfed Beef when its grassfed and grassfinished, is that you will have a lot more nutrition. Reporter but her cows were butchered at a local slaughterhouse thats now under investigation for processing diseased and unsound animals. Terra firma ranch is just one of dozens of local Grassfed Beef producers hit hard by this recall. Everything in this case comes within about 25 miles of where we are right now. Reporter adam parks sells the meat at his butcher shop in petaluma and says the recall has given his grassfed industry an undeserved black eye. This has been a burgeoning movement in Northern California and in our county in particular of bringing the highest quality grassfed well raised well cared for humanely butchered beef to our local consumers. Reporter local ranchers dont believe they should be included in the recall saying its too vague because their grassfed cows brought into slaughter were in the minority. Rancho feeding corporation is mostly in the business of slaughtering socalled retired dairy cows. Those animals do tend to be older. Reporter Jeremy Russell with the north American Meat Association Says older dairy cows are used to make cheaper ground beef products. That is exactly why the u. S. Sets a minimum standard for any animal thats going to enter the food supply and thats why they have inspectors present. Reporter the usda has an onsite office at rancho, but in a statement says the processing of the diseased cattle was done without the benefit of federal inspection. Big players like walmart have pulled the tainted products from their shelves. But we found that many of the mom and pop stores on the recall list still have no idea. Theres close to 1,000 of them. After we told the owner of bonfair market in alameda, he quickly removed some recalled hot pockets. Back in Sonoma County, adams insists his beef has nothing to do with frozen processed food. We can prove our animals are safe. Theyre done on a separate day. They dont comingle with the old dairy cows. Reporter you think there could have been cross contamination . No. Not possible. Why go to the extreme . All its done is shut down a plant that will really hurt all of the local Grassfed Beef growers here. Reporter the usda has had little to say on why it failed to catch the problems earlier. But it did confirm today that marin sun farms a gourmet meat producer has submitted an application to take over operations at the slaughterhouse. But that of course may take some time. Tonight at 11 00 we talk to the godfather of Grassfed Beef who says this recall may mean it will be a lot tougher to find locally raised meat and he is talking about the meat because they raise these cattle and they slaughter them seasonally. That meat that was slaughtered in 2013 is now sitting in freezers and they are on hold. And its confusing for a lot of consumers because youre wondering, okay, do i have that meat in my fridge . You know, theres a lot of products it ranges over. Reporter absolutely. Right now theres a particular list of items out there that if you go to our website, we have a list of them there. For example, particular hot pockets, but in terms of the grassfed stuff, thats where it gets confusing. Likely if you bought it from a bay area producer, it may be no good. Okay. Betty, thank you. New tonight, the court of appeals has agreed to expedite san joses lawsuit against major league baseball. In the richmo a dog struck and killed by a car. Witnesses say it was a San Francisco Police Officer who did it and he just kept on going. In the meantime, someone did put up flowers on the light post at the spot where that chihauhau was killed last saturday. But the dogs owner is distraught and contacted me late today by phone. She cried knowing someone cared enough to leave flowers on the light post. A memorial for her 8yearold chihauhau. That is nice that something did that. Reporter the dog was with a friend. He tied her to a post while he went into store. A Police Cruiser hit her and kept going when she wiggled out of her collar and ran into the street. Neighbors are in disbelief and dismayed. One of our witnesses say they had were so shocked at what happened, they didnt have time to note, you know, the number on the police car, who was driving. Or even go down and chase the car. Californias drought emergency has people looking for all kinds of solutions. And as allen martin shows us, one town is getting some help thanks to beer. Reporter they didnt even really know it but this is a story of a small town that cut a deal with the local brewery and when they shook hands, no one had any idea just how good a deal it would turn out to be. Reporter to ask city officials about water, we had to skip city hall with its robust orange trees because city officials had actually set up shop at the local fair. And guess what they were there to talk about. Water is gold. Yeah. Theres only so much. Reporter cloverdales water comes almost exclusively from lake mendocino and the russian river. A system in danger of becoming a postcard for the california drought. We asked the city, whats it going to take to get more water . They said, well, we need to put some more wells in. Reporter so Bare Republic wrote a check for nearly half a million dollars. There are just paying it forward in advance allowing the city to do the expansion. Reporter the brewery also started recycling its wastewater to cut back on its overall use. We are only using 3. 5 gallons of water for every gallon of beer so were very efficient in that regard. Er in a good neighbor. Yeah. They are a good neighbor. Yeah. Reporter so the beer keeps flowing and the town gets two new wells. A winwin deal in time for the drought. Its a good thing we did. If we didnt, not only Bare Republic but the city itself be in much drier straits. Again, that deal was cut before the drought. Those two additional wells fronted by the brewery really could mean the difference between having a water supply and running out. Any idea when those wells will be finished and able to store water . When they will start pumping . The plan was to start pumping in july but if the lake and the river are too dry it may not be possible. On the other hand, we get some rain, the city says those wells are about ready to go. Wow. Yeah. Creative. City saved by beer. Perfect. Great headline. Well, it wont be raining beer. But it will be raining water which apparently in cloverdale three gallons to one gallon they can make something good out of it. We can all use some rainfall around here. Well get it. That expanded greatly and now the entire state is under some type of drought designation whether moderate or to exceptional. We need some rainfall. Not going to get it. High pressure keeping us dry through the first half of next week. Great weather for you and your family to get outside but not good weather for our drought. We need some range. That will change. The two men who brutally beat bryan stow were both sentenced after pleading guilty. But from one of the men there was clearly no remorse. Cbs reporter dave lopez on what the judge will to say about that. Youre not only ruined the life of mr. Stow, the obvious victim in this matter, but of his children, his spouse, his family. Reporter and the tongue lashing from the judge for the two men who beat up bryan stow on opening day at Dodger Stadium 2011, marvin norwood, Louie Sanchez was just beginning. You are the biggest nightmare for individuals that attend Public Events such as sporting events or concerts. We have run into people like you that have no no civility. Reporter it was after the dodgers giants Season Opener march 2011. After the game stow and his friends were walking into the parking lot to catch a cab. That is when they were approached by sanchez and norwood. A verbal fight broke out. Then it got physical. He was hit in the side of the head. Hit his head on the pavement, and was unconscious instantly. And now bryan stow will never walk again or be able to feed himself. We shower him. We dress him. We fix his meals. But he has a federal weapons charge against him. He is looking at 10 years in jail on the federal level. No one on the bus was injured. Police say the bus was caught in the crossfire. It may have something to did with another shooting in oakland earlier today. Our Christin Ayers who broke the story is talking to police right now. Well get you more details as we just learned one of the people involved in the shooting has died. Well have more details coming up later on in the newscast. The Fairfield Police department is the latest Law Enforcement agency to issue bodyworn videocameras to its officers. The High Resolution cameras are about the size of a pager and can record audio and video. Proponents say it enhances officer safety, reduce liability and help with prosecution and case resolution. San rafael police recently started using the bodyworn videocameras under a new Pilot Program that will be evaluated in april. There could be a whole new strategy to capture dangerous gunmen in california. Cbs reporter sam shane on the call to change the way Emergency Responders react to an active shooting scene. Reporter its the image brought to mind when you hear the term active shooter incident, columbine, 1999. That caused Law Enforcement to retrain. Reporter the sheriff says after columbine, Law Enforcement changed their tactics with officers entering active shooting scenes immediately. So the first order of business is to neutralize that threat and not wait, not stage, not call for more resources. Reporter in november, a tsa agent was killed after a shooter opened fire at l. A. X. Airport. The suspect was taken into custody within minutes. But medical crews could not get to the agent for nearly half hour. I wanted to see what lessons we learned from there how to better respond to those incidents but most importantly, how do we transport and treat the patients that are injured out of there . Reporter so a pomona assemblyman has proposed a bill that would create a statewide training protocol for police, fire and ems to have a unified plan on how to respond to those types of shootings and help victims in need. So whether its firefighters using vests or helmets or Police Officers carrying maybe like a basic first aid pack. Reporter , he says his original list of over 200 doctors has dwindled to just 6, two of which tell us today they still arent accepting his anthem plan. Another example of what are called Narrow Networks of doctors available to many who purchase on the exchange. The insurance commissioner says Narrow Networks and inaccurate lists go hand in hand. Many hmos and Health Insurers have decided to narrow their networks for Exchange Product so there have been a lot of changes in terms of the content of the list leading to inaccuracies. Reporter the department of insurance doesnt regulate the carriers on the exchange. They are regulated by the department of managed care which tells us there is no law that requires the insurers list of doctors to be accurate, although the Department Says it will be reviewing their Narrow Networks for adequacy in march after everyone is all signed up. Although by that point, it will be too late for enrollees like gouda to switch insurers. Anthem continues to update its list and insurers say the Narrow Networks are necessary to offer low cost plans on the exchange.
