This resident has lived in marin 34 years. It is less than 3 square miles in size. About 9,000 people live here, but the mayor says the association of bay area government based on population projections it got from the state told the town to building 244 new Housing Units by next year. The number they gave us we found out later was a mistake. But by then they had rezoned property along highway 101 where styrofoam cup factory once stood if it had note occurred we would have probably zoned for a much lower density, a much more appropriate density for our small town. How a Safety System recently removed in a bay area city may have contributed to a crash that he sent a husband and wife to the hospital. ,,,,,,,,,, night right now. To try to avoid a im not taking it lightly. Its very, very serious. Now at 6 30, b. A. R. T unions and management working into the night to try to avoid a strike tomorrow. Our phil matier is following every step of these negotiations. Phil, its not just about the money, is it . Reporter no, its no. Although that is subject number one upstairs. It is also a way how b. A. R. T does business. Heres the story. Ill give you an example. If you have been faxing a report to people, we cant ask you to email it anymore without a mutual agreement. The union would need to say okay we are not faxening anymore. We are emailing it. So if you can imagine this building up over the decade that b. A. R. T has been in existence, it becomes a very expensive proposition. Really gets in the way of our providing the service we need to provide. They are called work rules and they are something that b. A. R. T wants to change. One of the biggest changes is that b. A. R. T wants workers to put in a full 40 hours on the clock before they get paid for overtime. Currently workers can take a paid sick day or vacation day and then come in later in the week on their day off and get over time if they work. One of the smaller rule changes b. A. R. T wants is the ability to start using computers for some jobs rat i than faxes and handwritten notes. One rule change b. A. R. T drop in the negotiations were its calls to change rules that allow some workers to pick where theyre going to work that day. But with every change the union wants something in return. Everything we are talking about six treatmently important. So it is not just a matter of this versus that or that versus this. The fact is everything thats on the table is extremely important to our members. Still, a lot of it comes down to money. B. A. R. T is offering its workers a 12 pay raise over the next four years. But the unions say thats not enough. Why 12 . On the surface a gross 12 ends up being a negative almost 1 for our members with the givebacks they want with regard to pay increase. Health, retiree, and pension cost. Maybe barely 1 a year in the positive, thats note a pay increase. A pay increase is something that is significant and were looking for. All of this is being debated as riders all around the bay area wonder if, in fact, the trains are going to run tomorrow. It will be interesting to see if they do because they only have a couple hours to work all of those work rules and pay out. Yeah, phil. Will be bad enough if they go on strike tomorrow, but we have a double dose of trouble with ac transit workers issuing their own strike notice. What are you hearing about that . Reporter i was talking with some of the transportation people and bart people. They expect ac Transit Management to do exactly what b. A. R. T did last time there was the threat of the strike. Two to the governor, ask for a cooling off period. Its one thing to have an ac transit strike. To have it while b. A. R. T may be going on strike, i think thats too much. Keep an eye on the governor to step in and say cool it down at least on that part. Phil, thank you. We cant help but think of how bad the traffic was during the last b. A. R. T strike. Liza btaloni shows us where it could be worse. Reporter if july was any indication, ken, we are in for epic commute tomorrow should this strike go down. Even with the extended car pool hours, you can expect very long commutes for not just the bay bridge but getting towards the san mateo. Also, the golden gate commute was very rough this past summer when traffic volumes are usually lower over summer vacation. We did see very long delays during the b. A. R.
