Oil refineries in california have been processing a heavier, dirtier type of crude in the last decade to make the gas that we all put in our cars. California has set Environmental Standards for the country to follow. Something that california is doing that smacks of green hi hipocracy. You wouldnt know about it unless you lived near this. This is Petroleum Coke. A byproduct of the oil refining industry. Its dirtier than coal get the refinery near marylands home is one of three bay area refineries that produce it. Its a really dirty secret. Reporter greg is a scientist with communities for a better environment. Oh, california is the worst. Reporter he says that california refineries burn the dirtiest crude in the nation and as a result produce the most pet coke. Since both the state and the feds consider it a byproduct, not a waste, californias strict emissions law doesnt apply. Refineries can produce as much of it as they want but state and federal regulations for burning it is strict because its so dirty. That makes it hard to sell in the u. S. What to do . Much of it is sold overseas. Reporter chris is with valero. Is there concerns about the pollution it causes overseas. Im not aware of those concerns. Reporter california exports 128,000barrels of Petroleum Coke a day. Most of it goes to china where its burned to generate electricity. And where it emits 5 to 10 more Carbon Dioxide than coal. That adds to chinas bad air problem and eats away at the worlds ozone layer. The governor says things like this. The disruption of the climate patterns in which all human beings depend is the greatest problem that mankind has ever faced. Reporter just this month, Governor Brown signed a memorandum of understanding with china pledging of all things to reduce greenhouse gases. Nobody talked about pet coke. The back and forth continues on capitol hill tonight. The house failed to pass a measure that would partially fund the government. They were looking to Keep National Parks open. The democrats are looking for what is called a clean bill, one that funds the government and nothing else. But i want every american to understand why it did happen. Something happened to jeff turner on the way home from work that changed his life forever. It was a tragic amputation. It happened when i was 25. Almost 25 years ago now. Australia native jeff turner lost his right leg in a motorcycle accident in 1991. He still recalls the accident as if it were yesterday. I was struck by a car riding a motor bike home from work. I was really lucky. There were three car thats hit me and an Emergency Room Physician driving home from work who saved my life on the spot. Think about doing a triathlon and when i was told that i wouldnt be able to run anymore, nothing would stop me from trying to run. You will see a lot of amputees running sort of pigeon towed towards the end of the race. On october 6th, the seasoned triathlon and marathon runner will be participating in the san jose rock and roll half marathon. People stop me and say i see you running by and i started running again. Thanks for that. Its interesting because people say i inspire them and in turn they inspire me to keep trying to work harder, to do what i do better. I think the guy who inspires a lot of people with that prosthetic device was Oscar Pistorius who was a double amputee and competed in the olympics.
