Diabetes is a Major Health Issue in the united states. I am joined by stephanie creel, associate director of communications for cdcs division of diabetes translation to talk about the National Prediabetes communication campaign. Its good to have you here. Thank you. I think people will be really surprised when you talk about these numbers. How pervasive is prediabetes and diabetes in our country . The numbers are very surprising. 86 million American Adults have prediabetes and 90 of them dont even know they have it. Thats on top of the 29 million americans who already have diabetes and one in four of those people dont know they have it. Those numbers are kind of startling but i think what is more startling is the fact that so many people dont know theyre at risk. Whats the cdc doing to try to combat this . We are trying to help get the information to the people who need it most. In january 2016 we launched the first ever Prediabetes Awareness Campaign with partners at the american medical association, American Diabetes association, ad council to get the information in peoples hands about how they can find out their risk. Has it been working . How effective. We have had impressive engagement. We use humor, have he relate able. People are going on line to take the risk test to find out if they have prediabetes. Thats a simple test. Everybody has the time to do it. Thats right. If the numbers are high on the test, then you get a blood sugar test. What they find out those are high. How do you help . Cdc has the National DiabetesPrevention Program where people can enroll in the program and find Real Life Solutions to help them in their own world. Its a terrific program and its been proven that it really works. Right now weve got to get the word out. That means you need to talk to your family and friends about it and you need to find out if you are at risk. Go to cdc. Gov diabetestv. Thanks for watching. Im joan and im michelle griego.
