They are hoping for later today or even tomorrow morning. We have more heavy rain coming in fact its here right now. We continue to see waves of Atmospheric River move into the bay area. Screen is lit up with pockets of moderate to heavy rainfall especially in the north bay. And i wanted to zero in on this particular area right there because if you look very carefully, look at the heavy rain now occurring in guerneville. This morning before receding later on this afternoon. Then we hop to the east bay. Moraga, danville, you, too with the raindrops on the rooftops. Then we spread to the south bay saratoga, cambrian park, campbell, light to moderate rainfall Santa Cruz Mountains getting hammered again. We have rain showers in chinatown and fulton street, San Francisco anywhere through the embarcadero to 3rd street street. Its sloppy. A Flood Warning is in effect for the Russian River in guerneville. Well keep an eye for the potential for heavy flooding. We have the Atmospheric River blowing into the area one more time again today and as i look at our futurecast its hitand miss scattered showers. The thursday morning commute is a new storm and cold front lingering across the bay area during the afternoon hours before it takes a nosedive to the south. But look what happens behind it. Its a secondary impulse that will interfere with our friday all the way into the commute hours. We are going to tag on at least another two to three inches of rain on top of what has already fallen right now as you take a look at the Golden Gate Bridge its raining there. Temperatures are in the 50s and 60s. Very mild. Later today with an increasing south wind 10 to 20 Miles Per Hour into the 60s up to 65 degrees. You can see here behind me traffic is at a crawl right now and it is only 6 a. M. This is 580 westbound here behind me. Im at north flynn road. But we have chopper 5 live above the closure right now which is one exit to the west at greenville road when westbound 580 goes down to two lanes. This road is jammed during a normal morning commute and the reason is two huge potholes that opened up this morning and 15 cars ended up with flat tires so the chp responded and now caltrans is doing emergency repairs here near the greenville road exit to 580 westbound but the traffic backup goes for miles to the east of that spot. So if you are anywhere east of livermore, trying to come into the city, you might want to rethink your plans this morning. This closure could likely last until 3 p. M. According to caltrans. Along the Altamont Pass on that Traffic Alert, pothole causing major damage here and again its westbound 580 at greenville road. Traffic at 8 Miles Per Hour and as anne said 12mile backup on to 205 and backed up on 580 coming from San Joaquin Valley, as well. So avoid the area. The alternates are Patterson Pass road but do expect delays there, as well. San mateo bridge from hayward to foster city, traffic starting to slow down but you have a 15 to 20minute drive across the span into the peninsula and then heres a live look at the nimitz freeway looking good from 238 in san leandro to the maze, thats just going to take but 20 minutes. Okay. Hows it looking into downtown San Francisco . I see a lot of rain coming down on the toll plaza here. So the maze to downtown will now take you 20 minutes so give yourself some extra time to get through that. And make sure youre driving slowly because the rain is coming down. Heres a look at the marin couldnt commute, highway 37 vallejo to novato is closed again between atherton avenue and highway 101. This is due to flooding in the area. And chp is diverting traffic off at atherton avenue westbound to get you back on you 101. To mass transit, this would be a great consideration for you to morning to avoid the rain. Surveillance video shows high winds ripping a roof off and throwing it into the road. Behind it, you can see an 18 wheeler topple over. This is outside new orleans. So far, officials are reporting dozens of injuries. But no fatalities. New this morning, a dog food recall. Officials say at least five dogs have gotten sick and one has died. The food is made by avengers called hunk of beef. The company says it may have been tainted with a drug that vets use to put down pets. I gave that to them just for a little treat and within 15 minutes they were Walking Around like they were drunk. They couldnt walk. The company says that the affected food contains phenobarbital and was made during the week of june 6. The Software Company blamed for causing huge problems in the Alameda County court system is firing back. Since august, the county has been using a new Software System called odyssey. The county says last month that problems with the system resulted in wrongful arrests and unwarranted jail times. The developer texas based Tyler Technologies released a statement about the claims yesterday. It says, quote, the superior court of Alameda County transitioned from a 40yearold system before they were ready and, in fact, tyler specifically advised the court that unless it was more prepared for going live data entry would fall behind and problems would result. The company says the same system is used in 24 california counties including San Bernardino and critics say San Bernardino has experienced the same kind of problems. Canadian man tried to help a neighbor out by clearing snow off their road with a zamboni but it unravels because somebody called the cops on him. Police say that the person was probably confused to see a machine meant for ice rinks on the streets. He says he was just trying to clear the way to his neighbors house. He could have cleared her drive and most of the road if the cops hadnt pulled him over. They didnt ticket him but they steered the man plus the zamboni home. Northbound side here is covered by mud. Theres a monster mudslide out there so chp is borrowing one of the lanes out of the southbound side and creating twoway traffic in the southbound side. The traffic is slow at 36 Miles Per Hour in the area. You are moving in both directions. So you can get through the area pretty smoothly. Expect delays. This is a major hot spot of the morning. 7 Miles Per Hour and about a 12 mile backup along the way here on westbound 580 at greenville road. Major potholes. We have pictures on our twitter page if you want to take a look there. They are very large. The rebars are showing so this is going to take a long time for chp to get this situated. But, of course, thats not a guarantee so if you can give yourself some extra time to get through this area or just avoid it if you can work from home thats a good idea, too. We do anticipate some modest flooding around the Johnson Beach area before the river recedes this afternoon. The homeowner says he could do nothing but watch as the moving hillside tore his home apart piece by piece. Of course, flooding is another huge concern. Reporter anything east of livermore now if you are trying to go west is a real mess right now. This is 580 westbound. Chopper 5 took some pictures above the actual problem earlier this morning. This is at the greenville road exit. Two very large potholes opened up and that has forced the closure of two of the lanes. The righthand lanes. That means that 580 westbound is down to only two lanes right now. We can get a closer look at the potholes on the pictures that the chp published. You can see the rebar is showing so the roadway is really wrecked right now. And caltrans says its going to take until about 3 00 this afternoon to actually repair those potholes. They caught wind of the problem at about 3 a. M. When about 15 cars had flat tires after hitting the holes. So it is something they need to take care of. But unfortunately, it is the commute here along 580 that is paying the price. If you can avoid it, we say do so. Live in livermore, anne makovec kpix 5. Time now 6 32. Roqui has traffic. Lets head to Altamont Pass traffic to give you a different visual here. Youre moving at 6 Miles Per Hour so youre just inching through and all of those red arrows, that is a 13mile backup on to 205 so youre in trouble if you are coming down from tracy on to the Altamont Pass. Youre also in trouble from San Joaquin County up to the Altamont Pass on westbound 580 down there to the right of your screen, as well. So again, this is westbound 580 at greenville road. Two very large potholes we just saw causing major damage and chp says it might not have it repaired until about 3 p. M. This afternoon. So well keep an eye on that. This is another Traffic Alert in the south bay, highway 17 down to only twoway traffic on the southbound side. Youre moving at 40 Miles Per Hour in the area. There is a mudslide on the northbound side. We saw a lot of red brake lights so give yourself extra time to get through there. And make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get through the san mateo bridge here. Traffic starting to slow down from hayward to foster city. Moving over now to the bay bridge toll plaza, traffic backed up towards the maze now so thats a 25minute drive from the maze to downtown. And i see some rain coming down, as well. But now look due west. Were seeing a batch of light rainfall offshore so its going to be a treesitterty rainy morning here in the bay area. But the hardest hit all morning long has been right there where they do not need the additional rainfall. Sonoma, napa, along highway 121 connecting with highway 12, thats where we have the heavy rain and i have to keep an eye on the areas with the orange because there could be thunderstorms. Oncord, clayton and walnut creek some light rain showers this morning then it tapers off as you head into the danville area around 680 this morning. South bay seeing a break and that cell just moved out of the alum rock area. It was just there. Gilroy has been seeing light to moderate rainfall, as well. 24 hours ago gilroy had isolated thunderstorms. We have a Flood Warning in effect for the Russian River near guerneville this morning its already nearly at 34 feet. The flood stage is 32. So we do anticipate modest flooding this morning before the river begins to recede this afternoon. We are blasted this morning by the Atmospheric River conditions. We have high tide at 8 51 this morning nearly 7 feet but we have a couple of cold fronts and thats what were going to deal with for our thursday. We have have a cold front coming through. Well have more coming up. As roqui said a mudslide is causing problems out there for drivers in the south bay. Maria medina is live along highway 17 in Santa Cruz County to tell us about the cleanup. Reporter good morning. The morning commute really starting to pick up here on highway 17 and slow down if you are just joining us the northbound lanes are shut down. The southbound side lanes remain open with twoway traffic. monsterwe passed by this monster mudslide an hour ago its massive completely covering the northbound lanes. Now, this mudslide sent a car airborne yesterday morning when it came down. That driver is okay. But we are talking about 20 feet of mud and rocks that covered the northbound lanes but at one point even shut down highway 17. That major route between san jose and santa cruz was closed for five hours yesterday. With the amount of rain we have been having its very challenging. Every time we think we have something stabilized, the amount of rain we experience, it proves otherwise. Reporter and county crews say they are stretched so thin because of the mudslides across the county that they are bringing in contractors to help them out and clean up this mess. Okay. So again, northbound lanes are closed because of this mudslide and theres twoway traffic in the southbound side. Traffic is smooth but it is starting to pick up and slow down. The city administrator has also been running Daily Fire Department meetings. She has been criticized since oaklands ghost ship fire in december. San jose Police Officers are getting a pay raise. City council just approved a 3 year deal that gives officers an immediate 10 raise. It also gives them a 5,000 bonus. The mayor says the new contract is critical to keep officers on the force. Right now state law bans cities from using automated Speed Enforcement systems. Today david chiu joined the mayors of San Francisco and san jose to announce the bill to change all that. Under the plan, getting caught by speed cameras would result in a fine but wouldnt add points to your license. Time now 6 46. Its going to be another busy day on the roads. In San Francisco, northbound 280 before highway 101 is a two car crash blocking the left lane. That backup is to ocean avenue but if you are stuck in that, come on, at least youre not along the Altamont Pass, right . Traffic alert on the Altamont Pass, this is westbound 580 at greenville road, two very large potholes. We have pictures on our twitter account. Now moving the just 6 Miles Per Hour and that backup is up to 13 miles. Backed up on westbound 580 out of San Joaquin County so if this is part of your morning commute avoid the area. Take Patterson Pass road but its also jammed. Its delayed but better than this. Another alternate is ace train. It frees up in livermore but you will in the Altamont Pass traffic for quite a while until you get to livermore. Heres the san mateo bridge from hayward to foster city. As you can see, traffic is starting to slow down here. Now, this slide sent an suv airborne yesterday morning when it came down. That driver is expected to be okay. But we are talking a massive mudslide, 20 feet of mud and rocks that cover the northbound lanes. At one point, highway 17 was shut down for five hours yesterday completely. This is the biggest one definitely. Theres quit a bit more earth. Its life half the mountainside came down into the road. Its a big serious slide. Reporter county crews say they are stretched so thin because of the mudslides countywide that they are bringing in contractors to help them clean up. The northbound lanes here on highway 17 on vine hill road shut down as they clean up the mess. The southbound lanes are open to twoway traffic. The chp doesnt have a timeline on when they will open the northbound lanes. They are hoping for some time later today or tomorrow. Live in Santa Cruz County, maria medina, kpix 5. It is 6 57. Just to add to your report, just in, chp says that should be open highway 17 should be open tomorrow by 4 p. M. But, of course, thats not a guarantee. Well keep an eye on that for you here. Moving to the other Traffic Alert, along the Altamont Pass, this has been the major hot spot of the morning. Westbound 580 at greenville road. There are two very large potholes out there causing trouble here. 6 Miles Per Hour there. Actually a 15mile backup on to 205 in tracy. So if you are heading from tracy or San Joaquin County to the Altamont Pass, you have your work cut out for you. Avoid the area. Consider ace or maybe Patterson Pass road but thats also jammed so give yourself plenty of time if you do have to take this route to get to where youre going. It does free up once you get to livermore but again, you have a lot of minutes to drive in the Altamont Pass traffic due to potholes.
