Thats a lot at a low elevation showing you just how cold this air is. And then plenty of snow from a foot to 36 up above 7,000 feet. So fresh powder for all your skiers and snowboarders. Travel delays likely today at sfo. Anticipate a wet windy day to start the day with lingering showers and thunderstorms this afternoon because of that cold instable air mass thats in unstable air mass thats in place. Elsewhere travel delays due to bad weather in chicago, houston. Not bad for atlanta and new york but now what happens once you see delays at one airport hub, you get the domino effect. A quick look at the highs today. Staying in the 50s pretty much areawide. Rain tapering to showers with the possibility of thunderstorms. More on that coming up just a bit. Back to you guys. It is also pretty windy out here in Half Moon Bay, as well. But that is not all that we are here to talk about. Theres also some high surf. The National Weather service says they can expect to see waves up to 20 feet high here along the coast but i checked the surf report and there are spots expecting about 15 to 18 feet high today. And, of course, with people coming from out of town for the Holiday Weekend theres a warning to stay out of the water because of the large waves. The good news is that as i move my hair, you can see it is windy and rainy out here, the good news is that the large waves according to the National Weather service arent expected anywhere near the coast but a little offshore but the water is cold, about 50 degrees. I also want to show you wondering why my hair is so dry, thats because my photographer is awesome. Take a look at what he has done for me. And then four were arriving here at sfo that were canceled. And those were two from palm springs, one from l. A. , one from las vegas. Now, a Record Number of people will be on the go today as they try to get to their holiday destinations. More than 6 Million People are expected to fly but with gas prices low, most are expected to drive. Aaa says 93 Million People will be on the roads this holiday season. At l. A. X. , the countrys second largest airport, 850 flights were delayed and more than 150 canceled over 48 hours. What are you going to do tonight . Um, watch netflix and hopefully not get my bags stolen. Altamont pass to 680 will take you 14 minutes. Now a look at the san mateo bridge from hayward to foster city, thats 880101, thats a quick 15 minutes. But we have some crashes to tell you about in both directions. Starting with the eastbound side at the incline, its a threecar crash blocking the right lane. And on the westbound side on the highrise, its a solo car crash blocking the right lane as well but not causing many slowdowns so thats the good news. Northbound side of 880, heres a look at 238 from san leandro to the maze will take you 17 minutes. And then if you are headed into San Francisco, a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza, you are driving smoothly through the toll there. Those metering lights are not even on now. The maze to downtown is a quick 11 minutes. But once you get into San Francisco, also eastbound 80, before 7th street, theres some flooding to worry about so make sure if this is part of your commute that youre driving carefully. This morning, they massive manhunt for the suspect in the berlin attack is dead. We have more details. Reporter the manhunt for anis amri ended in milan italy 600 miles south of the berlin Christmas Market attack. [ nonenglish language ] reporter the italian interior minister confirmed the 24yearold fugitive died this morning in a shootout with authorities near the train station and not far from the airport. Two policemen reportedly stopped amri, who was on foot. He took off running, pulled a pistol from his backpack, and shot one of the officers in the shoulder according to police. A second officer then shot amri dead. Amri had earlier been spotted in berlin on cctv footage visiting this mosque, both before and after the attack. This dashcam video released yesterday shows the truck barreling into the market. Authorities linked amri to the incident after his id and later his fingerprints were found inside the truck. Originally from tunisia, amri entered germany seeking asylum. His application was rejected and he was supposed to be deported this summer. Amri was known to authorities as a possible Terror Threat and had been under surveillance since september. He was also put on a u. S. No fly list five months ago. Since the attack mourners have left flowers at the site where 12 people were killed. Dozens of others are still being treated for injuries. Riley carlson for cbs news, london. He had been set on fire by a suspect who got away on a bike. A judge decided to block the rent control measure passed by voters in Mountain View that would have imposed a limit on rent hikes tied to the Consumer Price index capped at 5 . Now, to the south bay. How are things looking . We had a lot of rain coming down in the area but traffic is moving smoothly throughout. 101 northbound, 280 northbound and 87 northbound are all looking good. Now, lets talk about mass transit. It is the holiday time. So we have to expect some changes on mass transit throughout the area. First, bart, pittsburgbay point line has a schedule change. And that is 10 to 15minute intervals instead of five minute intervals during peak times through january 2. Moving over now to ace train 3 and 5 are running, afternoon trains 4 and 6 are running but one, seven, eight and ten are canceled. Larkspur ferry 8 45 this morning out of larkspur is canceled. 4 p. M. Out of San Francisco is canceled due to mechanical problems and capitol corridor has a systemwide delay due to track problems between suisun and martinez. Julie . Thanks, roqui. And we are tracking rain on hi def doppler. This fastmoving front right now stretching pretty much from sacramento to San Francisco right along that 80 corridor. The heaviest rain to the south and the east of the front and then we are seeing i wouldnt say linger were seeing showers back behind the front. Well see lingering showers as the front moves south and east throughout the day. But heres a loop over the last couple of hours and you can see heavy rain in the bay area. If you are heading out on the roads this morning a little ponding. The good news its a fast moving front. Bad news is we are seeing a lot of rain in a little amount of time and we could see localized ponding and flooding on the roads. Right now heavy rainfall in richmond, in oakland, in San Francisco. We are seeing some of the heaviest rain right now and then neat east bay lafayette, san ramon, concord, antioch, all see moderate to heavy rainfall. Up in the high country snow levels down to just above Pollock Pines and grass valley. I think they will continue to lower throughout the day into tomorrow. A winter storm warning in effect through saturday afternoon. Snow levels down to around 3,000 feet. Travel delays for the foothills and the sierra. Rain in the bay area will taper off earlier but well continue to see snow flurries likely in the Higher Elevations through tomorrow. Current temperatures outside, 45 in santa rosa right now. 51 in san jose. 45 in livermore at this hour. Satellite perspective shows whats the trigger for all of this. This area of low pressure right now it is spinning this front our way. But notice also this popcorn like cloud structure indicative of a cold air mass. That cold air is also unstable and will bring with it the possibility of thunderstorms later on this afternoon. So for right now, were dealing with the front of the the heaviest rain, the highest winds, passing through. Behind it, lingering showers really widespread rain continuing through lunchtime today. Its later this afternoon that the showers become a bit more scattered in nature and we get the best possibility for those thunderstorms that daytime heating. Advancing over into saturday, a couple of lingering showers possible for the first part of the day but overall, well be dry for the second half of your Christmas Eve and the first day of chanukah. Continuing on into christmas morning, i think we could see some freezing temperatures overnight saturday into sunday especially in some of our inland valleys so make sure the kids bundle up. We have dry conditions for your christmas. But cold is the story for this Holiday Weekend. Rain forecast showing just how much we might see over the next 24 hours. You can see some condensation on the lens. Well let you know how its affecting one of the busiest travel days of the year. But first, julie watts has been tracking the storm all morning long. And the storm has been moving quickly through the bay area this morning. To the southeast, you can see the front right here actually stretching from sacramento to San Francisco pretty much right along the 80 corridor. It will continue to push to the south and notice still plenty of rain behind. It the heaviest rain though in front of that front along with some of the highest winds. Well go ahead and take a closer look at where some of the heaviest rain is falling right now. Really from San Francisco southeast so really getting hammered there. The north bay did see some of the heaviest rain earlier today and still seeing pockets of heavy to moderate showers passing through santa rosa, yountville, heading down to vallejo, novato, fairfax. We are definitely seeing, though, heavy rainfall now, in fact i wouldnt be surprised if you saw some flooded roadways, some ponding on the roads this morning, in and around San Francisco, daly city, south San Francisco. Now the heavy rainfall pushing off to the easterlyier today. Light rainfall heavy from berkeley, oakland, san leandro, hayward, san ramon, walnut creek, further east up to the high country. We have been here for hours and i can tell you that the rain has not let up, that its continued and that its heavy at this hour. So if you are heading out there, if you have to, please be careful. Now, back out here at sfo, only 7 Flights Canceled so far this morning. And so far, no delays but as we said as the day continues, the duty manager says to expect about a 2. 5hour delay. Awful 2. 5hour delays and she said some 7 00 until midnight so certainly if you know anybody who is planning to fly out of sfo today, have them check their flights ahead of time because it is way better to wait at home or at your hotel than to be stuck at the airport. So lets take a look at the bay area morning commute. Starting with the Altamont Pass, this has been a treat all morning long. We are just now seeing some slowdowns as you hit north flynn road at 47 miles per hour. But then again, thats definitely not as bad for you morning commuters along the pass. Now, headed to Castro Valley, we have a crash to tell you about. This is our major crash of the morning. Eastbound 580 before eden canyon road, its a multi vehicle crash involving five to six cars and its blocking the three right lanes that backup already to lake herman road and youre moving at just 10 miles per hour. So this is a pretty bad commute here. Avoid the area if you can. Moving to the san mateo bridge from hayward to foster city, this commute is now up to 26 minutes between 880 and 101. And those roads are wet so you want to be careful driving and a look at the nimitz freeway in both directions on northbound 880 from 238 in san leandro to the maze, that will take you 19 minutes. And if you are heading into downtown San Francisco, a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza with a lot of rain coming down on it right now, the maze to downtown will just take you 9 minutes. So thats the good news. Ill send it to you. All right, roqui. Thank you. New this morning we are hearing from the family inside their home when it went up in flames at 10 p. M. Last night on al ham practice lane in the Oakland Hills area. The man who lives there says that he was watching tv when his daughter started screaming to get out. So i went out the front and checked what was going on and its all flames coming out from underneath the garage. And i guess it went up pretty quickly because by the time i turned around to go back inside, i couldnt see her outside, the whole front door was filled with smoke. There is damage to the house and garage and the cause is under investigation. A 15yearold Football Player is back in custody after the Contra Costa CountyDistrict Attorney filed felony Sexual Assault charges against him. The student attends de la salle high in concord. Police say he sexually assaulted a student from nearby Carondelet High School after a varsity Football Game on november 18. He was arrested and then released from custody as investigators built their case. Since the suspect is just 15, the case is now being referred to juvenile court. San franciscos police union is suing to prevent the department from adopting new rules on use of force. A new policy approved by the Police Commission prohibits officers from shooting at moving cars. The union claims that city negotiators verbally agreed to allow officers to open fire in exceptional circumstances like terrorist attacks but refuse to put it in writing. The Police Commissions refusal to continue talks since october is an unfair labor practice, the union says. We agreed on about 99 of the policy including very restrictive prohibitions on firing at suspects in moving vehicles. But we also agreed that there should be exceptional and extreme circumstances in there where an officer can deviate from the policy in those circumstances. Members of the Police Commission say that they have done enough negotiating and they can legally move forward without the poa on board. To get to the point where we agreed on 99 was wonderful. Halloran says that the union will file for a restraining order today to prevent the new policy from taking effect until there is a final resolution to the dispute. And the federal government stockings are going to be filled with cash after the department of justice struck two big deals related to the mortgagebacked securities scandal from eight years ago. This involves a couple of things, Deutsche Bank and credit suisse. Deutsche bank will settle for 7. 2 billion. Credit suisse for 5. 3 billion. That sent shares of both banks heading higher despite those big penalties because each faced even bigger penalties. Deutsch was looking at 14 billion penalty. That raised speculation that it would have needed a government bailout in order to survive that. President elect donald trump does like tweeting about defense contracts.
