Rain showers over the peninsula, daly city, and as we head over towards the south bay campbell and los gatos, you, too are hearing raindrops on the rooftops. Lets pull this on out so you can take a look at where the rain is coming from. Its off the Pacific Ocean. Typically this time of the year, we see rain showers from the north to the south. But meanwhile, this time we are seeing it from the west to the east and lifting to the north. Theres our hidef Doppler Radar. What were taking a look at mao is this huge cluster of rain immediately off the coast. This is heading directly towards the north bay and the city of San Francisco within the next couple of minutes and when you see orange on your tv screen, that could be the risk of a thunderstorm activity so well keep you posted on that. We have seen over 250 lightning strikes around the bay area in the overnight hours. Meanwhile, live weather camera looking out towards a very wet Golden Gate Bridge, air temperatures are balmy in the 50s and in the 60s. But the winds are under 10 Miles Per Hour. That is the only weather feature that really did not materialize associated with this warm front passing through the bay area. The lack of a wind. But thats good. Havent seen any downed trees or power lines. Temperatures today with the rain showers tapering off and only a spotty afternoon shower in the 50s and 60s, and even the 70s to the south. We have the timing of your second storm thats going to impact your weekend coming up. All right, that rain could cause a lot of problems on the roads this morning. It could be a slow drive because it is slick. Kpix 5s anne makovec is tracking conditions live on the toll plaza. How is it . Reporter i want to say right off the bat that if you are heading to the bay bridge from San Francisco, the entrance near first street is blocked right now. So take an alternate. Well have more information from roqui in a little bit. Im on the other side of the bay bridge now and traffic is moving slowly. Roberta has been talking about the storm being tropical which is good. Its warm. Its not windy. And here is a look at the traffic. Again it is backed up. The roads are wet. But theres not a lot of puddles out here right now and thats because theres already been so much traffic thats moved through here that a lot of that water is moved off of the road. Still, youre going to want to leave some extra time for your morning commute. Heres some of the footage from last nights rainy commute. This is what it looked like from the inside of one of our crews vehicles. Cars splashing through puddles, windshield wipers and umbrellas all out. Chp has responded to dozens of accidents because of the roads, a lot of driving going too fast for conditions. For now, the rain has been falling for the past 12 hours. So we have had plenty of rain, plenty more to come over the next few hours. Lets get right to roqui theus for more on that big accident blocking the entrance to the bay bridge from the San Francisco side. Roqui. Yes, thank you, anne. Lets talk about it right now. San francisco is in chaos right now if you are trying to get from San Francisco to the east bay, let me tell you how to get there without using the bay bridge. The san mateo bridge is your best alternate if you want to take 101 or 280 south to highway 92. Now lets talk about that big rig crash blocking the entrance to eastbound 80. The crash is at the beginning of the lower deck of the bay bridge. It is a big rig jackknifed blocking four lanes. Only the right lane is open. And because of that jackknifed big rig, you have fuel leaking down into the onramp shutting down the onramp, as well. Now, first street is closed but right lane is open. Essex and fifth are closed. They are being diverted at fourth and coming back on at sterling. This will take hours to open up. This is involving a big rig and we know those take a while to open up. Now, if you want to avoid the roads altogether again, take san mateo bridge or if you want to take the Golden Gate Bridge to the Richmond San Rafael bridge, that is another alternate, as well. Now lets move over to oakland side. We have a crash southbound 880 at 5th street is an overturned car off to the shoulder. But as you can see in the area cars moving at just 17 Miles Per Hour heading to the maze. And if you want to avoid all the roads, thats definitely a great suggestion here. Mass transit all on time. Roberta is busy with the rain to talk about. Roqui, ill take that. Thank you. In pacifica crews are watching for forceful waves and heavy rain as they work to protect the coastline. Kpix 5s maria medina has the latest from pacifica. Reporter in case you cant see that it is raining, we are going to show you how much water has checked on our live truck just the last hour here. They are concerned about minor flooding. You can see a little bit of ponding in the street. Not very dramatic. This is just the beginning of the storms this weekend, right . So they are concerned about the coastal bluffs right down the street from me. They saw a lot of erosion there during the el nino storms earlier this year. The city even redtagged an Apartment Building demolished another building before it went over the cliff and declared a state of emergency. We also saw a breach of the seawall during one of those storms and public works crews told us yesterday that they have those repairs nearly complete and they say with this storm, they are going to stay on top of things. What we have been doing maybe over the last three or four months is preparing for a winter storm and stuff and that involves keeping and monitoring our coastal bluffs along with our seawalls, catch basins, spillways, making sure theres no debris flow in our creeks, that kind of thing. Reporter and so what they are concerned about are those heavy rains during a storm or backtoback storms. They say those heavy rains really saturate the ground and start seeing erosion. Back out here live you can see the surf here in pacifica really starting to pick up. They say they will have extra crews here on standby throughout the weekend just in case things get bad. Live in pacifica, maria medina, kpix 5. Federal safety investigators are in new york today to investigate the runaway incident involving the plane of vicepresident ial nominee mike pence. Ill talk about when the rain will end and when the second storm will roll into the bay area. We have weather and traffic in less than four minutes. California is experiencing fewer problems than most other statewide Health Insurance ex changes. A new analysis from the ap found that california is one of nine states where customers can choose between at least three health plans. Earlier this month, it was estimated that more than a Million People in 32 states would have to find new coverage because their provider pulled out of the program. Chp traffic issued an alert for this eastbound 80 crash thats involving a big rig. Its jackknifed at the beginning of the lower deck and leaking fuel on to the onramp so the onramp is officially closed right now and it is still blocking four lanes. Only the right lane is getting by. First street is closed, essex is closed, 5th street is closed and those are the onramps to the eastbound 80 to the eastbound side of the bridge here. Its going to take about two to three hours to clear this out and as you can see, traffic is moving at just 26 Miles Per Hour. Its also slow on the westbound side, as well. Now, the important part of this, how do you avoid it . We are suggesting the san mateo bridge. You can take 101 or 280 south on to highway 92 here and heres a look at that slow moving traffic into the peninsula but if you are heading on the eastbound side youre looking good actually. 880 to 101 westbound will take you about 20 minutes. But expect a much easier drive on the eastbound side. Now moving over to the Golden Gate Bridge, take the Golden Gate Bridge into the Richmond San Rafael bridge. It looks good on the bridge here and on the Richmond Bridge but we dont have a live look at that right now. Lets take a look at mass transit throughout the area. All mass transit is on time. Roberta . Thank you, roqui. Good morning, everybody. I have been taking a look at the rain totals over the past 12 hours and we have already seen up to threequarters inch of rain in San Francisco. Heftier amounts to the north of the north bay. Right now see this area of yellow and orange . This is a pretty moderate cell thats now pushhhhing and lifting into the north bay. That orange has the potential of producing a thunderstorm. And we did see some lightning strikes off the coast of San Francisco in the overnight hours. 250 lightning strikes. Okay. Right now, moderate rain pushing into the petaluma area. East bay, its from antioch into bethel island, brentwood you have some light rain showers. Discovery bay a little void of it right now but all of this is all the way into the concord, clayton and walnut creek. We are buying a break into the peninsula but in south city we see light rain and in the south bay, light rain is pushhhhing out of sunnyvale, cupertino and campbell making tracks towards downtown san jose into the rose Garden District and in willow glen. All this activity is subtropical so its not cold. Its very warm. Very juicy. All this rain has been lifting out of the Pacific Ocean up in a northeast direction. Its wet at the Golden Gate Bridge and definitely slippery when wet. Temperatures are in the 50s and 60s. Again, very mild out the door and as you get the kids ready for school doesnt have it layer them up. Its a moderate to light rainfall at this particular time. It looks like temperatures with the 50s and 60s, we do have that calm wind. This is the only thing that hasnt materialized with this storm. The winds. They have been relatively light. It will be 5 to 15 during the afternoon hours when the rain tapers off. Well still see a spotty shower. Well keep the chance of a thunderstorm only in the morning forecast. It will be cloudy tonight a breakthrough saturday. And then a cold front moves in on saturday night through your sunday. This is beautiful. Its our satelliteradar. It indicates that this is the plume of moisture that drifts all the way back to the eastern pacific tapping into subtropical moisture. Thats why its so showery in nature as you head out for your commute but then upstream we have an area of low pressure that he a cold front thats going to impact sunday. Heres your lunch hour. It will be mostly cloudy with just the stray shower. Heres your evening commute. Again, a little bit of light activity out towards the eastern foothills of our east bay and lifting into the central valley. Otherwise well have that break. Heres your sunday morning. Might even be able to get out for a bike ride before the cold front comes from the north. This slices to the south. This will override the warm air mass thats in place right now. Thats when we have a chance of a thunderstorm at any point of the day on sunday. Then well begin to see a break for halloween. Rainfall totals up to 2. 5 by sunday night easily up to an inch in San Francisco and inch and quarter in san jose. We have a Flash Flood Watch in effect for the Monterey County area for the soberanes fire and chimney fire zones. In addition to that, we now have in addition to Flash Flood Watch in the high sierra, we do have a Winter Weather watch. A snow level down to 6,000 feet saturday night that will encompass the blue canyon area, as well. Snow at the Higher Elevations by sunday above 7,000 feet. So there you have the watch for the high sierra and the western slopes. Sunrise 7 32. By the time it sets, temperatures 60s and low 70s. Again a real tropical feel to your day. Showers taper off later today with mostly cloudy skies saturday, cold front enters the picture overnight primarily on sunday with a chance of a thunderstorm. Im kenny choi. Im michelle griego. Time now 6 30. Its been a soggy morning raining all over the bay area and we are seeing big problems on the commute. And as roqui said, mentioned earlier, the rain is already causing a lot of problems on the roads so lets check that. Yes. Thank you, guys. Okay. Traffic is stopped in San Francisco if you are heading to eastbound 80. Eastbound 80 a big rig is blocking four lanes. The right lane is open. It is leaking fuel on the first and 5th street onramps. So those two onramps are closed. Also closed the essex and sterling onramps and this is going to take at least up to two to three hours to open and thats at least because this could take much longer. You know how long those big rig crashes take to clear. Now, moving over to an alternate route because you will definitely want to avoid this altogether, heres a look at the san mateo bridge and a live look at the we cant even see it because of the rain. 880 to 101 westbound will take you 18 minutes. Eastbound the entrance into the east bay shouldnt take too long and its moving if you can see past the raindrops here. Now lets tank a look at another alternate. Golden gate bridge into the east bay both directions good. You can take Golden Gate Bridge to the Richmond San Rafael bridge if you are heading into the east bay. So a couple of good alternates but you will definitely want to avoid eastbound 80 from San Francisco into the east bay right now. Bay bridge toll plaza maze to downtown a long 34 minutes. Roberta . Ill take it, roqui. Youre talking about the toll plaza. Kpix 5s anne makovec is tracking the conditions there and anne, how is it now . Reporter ceremony better than it is on the other side certainly better than it is on the other side of the bay bridge as roqui talked about the big rig accident at the entrance on the westbound side is really eastbound side, rather, is really bad right now. But this is the westbound side. You have the normal traffic. You can see behind me that the roadways are wet but the more traffic that we have been seeing here on the roadway the more vehicles there have been to push that water off of the pavement. Its not so bad. The splashing beneficial for those of you who have yet to hit the roadway [chuckling] for your morning commute. We had a crew out during last evening to show how that looked driving around at the beginning of this storm. The chp responded to dozens of accidents overnight because of the wet roads. Drivers in many cases going too fast for the conditions. So reminder to give yourself extra time as you are heading out. Later when it gets light out, if you have your windshield wiperses on, remember you have to have your headlights on, as well. But she is describing it perfectly by the smell and it just its so tropical in nature when you head on out the door thats the one feature that may surprise you. Its not one of those cold winter storms. It feels like youre in hawaii him. This morning. And just think of it as these are beneficial rains for us here in the bay area. Its accumulating. We see nearly an inch of rain in the past 12 hours in livermore threequarters in San Francisco. This is really impressive. Its our live hidef Doppler Radar. I want to zero in on the north bay because its been raining there all morning. So anywhere you leave from whether its santa rosa, petaluma, novato, into the Golden Gate Bridge, its slippery. Seeing a break in the eastern portion of the bay area except along the 680 from walnut creek into danville. Rain showers into the Santa Clara Valley. Look at the city of San Francisco. We were just wet. Now buying a break. Upstream we have the eastern portion of the Santa Clara Valley campbell moderate rain cell there. Lots gastrectomy wet. That you will is lifting off the Pacific Ocean northeast. This cell is going to highway 121 causing ponding on the roads. When you see these areas of orange, right here, embedded in that moderate rain cell, that could contain a thunderstorm so watch out for that. We have already seen 250 lightning strikes off the coast of pacifica in the overnight hours. You can clearly see that the Golden Gate Bridge is definitely wet. You need that umbrella out the door. Well have morning rain all through the commute. Temperatures balmy 50s and 60s. Later today, the rain showers do taper. But we will have a scattered spotty shower. Temperatures in the 60s and low 70s. Once this system is out of here, we have a cold front to deal with. Well talk about the timing of that. Thats coming up. But right now lets go ahead and send it over. We have maria medina in pacifica. She has been tracking the possibility of erosion in that area. Maria has been there this morning. She is a little bit on the soggy side. Whats going on out there . Reporter yeah, good morning, roberta a little bit of break from the rain in the last few minutes. They are concerned about minor flooding here. I want to show you the amount of water in the streets. Not significant. But it shows that it has been raining here for quite some time. This is just the beginning of whats to come. Now, what they are really concerned about are the coastal bluffs just down the street from me. Thats where they really saw some erosion during the el nino storms this year. It caused the city to declare a state of emergency. They redtagged one Apartment Building and they demolished another one before it went over the cliff. We also saw a breach of the seawall here as well and city crews they tell us that they have those repairs nearly complete and they say, you know, with this storm all they can do is just really stay on top of things. I been out here for many years. We always prepare for the worst and hope for the best. This storm here, we are concerned about the amount of water in a short period of time. We are looking at maybe three quarters inch which could, you know, cause some minor flooding. I have been keeping an eye on the cliff all year to see if theres been any further erosion. It sits in the back of your mind is it going to happen soon . It happened just down here. Reporter thats tara. She lives on the cliffside so she worries about that erosion. So, you know, city crews they say is heavy rains and backto back storms. Because when the ground is saturated, they see the erosion. But throughout the weekend city crews say they will have extra staff here. Maria medina, kpix 5. New this morning nearly 150 protestors in north dakota were arrested when they clashed with police over a proposed pipeline. [ screaming ] the protestors have been camped out on a private property for months. Officers dressed in riot gear and armed with pepper spray moved in on the protestors last night. They are protesting the Dakota Access oil pipeline. They think it could compromise their party line. Sheldon adelson denies that he is ready to walk away from the deal to bring the raiders to las vegas. He pledged 650 million for building a new stadium but this week he said the raiders were making too many demands. Yesterday, an aide for adelson said the comment was blown out of proportion and he is nowhere close to pulling out of the project. Police are trying to track down burglars in san leandro. The suspects were captured on Surveillance Video on brad hoff way last week. Police say that the burglars also hit homes on benedict drive and another neighborhood. They are looking for a red honda civic. The roof is distinct because it has oxidized paint. Researchers now have a better idea of what caused the death of a blue whale whose carcass washed up on daly city this week. The necropsy revealed skull fractures suggesting blunt force trauma. But its unclear what caused it. The Marine Mammal center says that the whale measures about 65 feet. Blue whales are endangered and are considered the largest animals on earth. Time now is 6 38. Officer kevin downs is partially paralyzed and continues to recover after surgery to remove bullet fragments from his brain. St. Ignatius high school will hold a raffle at tonights football game. It will benefit a nonprofit started by officer downs to help returning Service Members transition to civilian life. Downs was wounded last week during a confrontation with a mentally ill man who was later shot and killed during a standoff. A key Financial Report brings encouraging news as we enter the weekend. Economy shifted out of neutral in the 3rd quarter [chuckling] where the Commerce Department reporting gdp grew at 2. 9 more than double the rate in the 2nd quarter. You could really chalk it up to businesses restockpiling. That was a big issue in the first half of the year but business is more confident as we approaching the holiday season. Also, exports were up as the dollar stabilized a bit over the past few months. Consumer spending was significantly weaker than the prior quarter at half the pace. [chuckling] but that spending did go towards durable goods like cars and appliances which is key for manufacturers. She says she used it all over her body between 15 and 61 years old when she was diagnosed. Her suit says talc a mineral found in the powder is a carcinogen.
