The department went through this last year and this memorial will very likely grow. Mike katherman loved his job and the chief says its up to us to live up to his sacrifice. We are learning more about the officer himself. He was an 11year veteran and has served with sjpd his entire career. He went to Valley Christian High School and is survived by his wife and two boys, both school age. He was in full uniform on routine patrol on his motorcycle going northbound on 10th street near horning street yesterday afternoon when a van pulled in front of him. He couldnt stop in time and hit the van. The motorcycle ended up 250 feet away from the point of impact. He was taken to Regional Medical center where fellow officers held vigil but he was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later. Dozens of officers including some from his Motorcycle Unit showed up to form a silent procession and escorted the body to the coroners office. Police chief eddie garcia described how a Good Samaritan stopped to help. A witness stopped and provided first aid to officer katherman and actually used officer kathermans police radio to call for help. Kpix 5 reporter lisa chan tells us supervisors just unanimously approved a plan to create six navigations. Lisa. Reporter San Francisco supervisors just passed a plan tuesday to open six new homeless shelters within the next two years. This unanimous vote comes after three months of controversial negotiations over supervisor david campos homeless shelter legislation. The original proposal would have required the city to open six long term homeless shelters also known as Navigation Centers, within a year. A Navigation Center allows people to bring in all of their belongings and companions as they look for permanent housing. The centers would have also included a wet house and safe injection site which means people drink there and legally use drugs. In april supervisor campos says something needs to be done to address the homelessness problem. We know that there is an increase in the number of homeless about 4 increase but beyond the numbers, i think qualitatively its bad. Reporter mayor ed lee opposed the idea of a safe injection site and said there is no way six Navigation Centers could be open in a year. They worked out a plan. With the help of the citys new homeless director they agreed on the legislation that gives the city two years to open six Navigation Centers and the city will explore the idea of having a wet house instead of requiring it. The revised plan focuses on permanent support of housing to find a way to pay for the goal of housing 8,000 people over the next four years. Authorities say the man committed at least 12 homicides, 45 rapes and dozens of burglaries between 1976 and 1986. Multiple agencies including the Contra Costa County District Attorneys office, Sacramento Police and the fbi are working together in the search. They are expected to release sketches of the suspect today. A sad morning for the San Jose Police department. Late last night they found out they lost one of their own. Jury selection continues today in the criminal trial of pg e in connection to the 2010 pipeline explosion in san bruno. Fellow officers from a Motorcycle Unit led the vehicles. Katherman was an eleven year veteran and lives behind a wife and two sons. He was 34. Yesterday afternoon he was riding his motorcycle northbound on 10th street at horning. A minivan turned left in front of him and he couldnt stop in time motorcycle was 250 feet away from the point of impact. A Good Samaritan stopped to him, tried performing cpr and used his police radio to call for help. Paramedics took him to the hospital where he died. Police chief eddie garcia said he loved his job and his family. The san jose pd is mourning. This community is mourning. But we will strive to live up to officer kathermans sacrifice on a daily basis. The driver of the minivan is cooperating and stayed on the scene to help investigators.
