Today San Jose City leaders will take up a dilemma involving massage parlors. They want to prevent prostitution and encourage legitimate business. Kiet do is live at city hall with details on what the council is considering today. Good morning. Reporter good morning. The state has now handed a lot of the control of massage parlors back to the locals at the city and state level at the city and county level, i should say. Now today the San Jose Police department will be outlining its plan to deal with them so let the crackdown begin. At last count in san jose alone there were 295 massage parlors. In recent years, when the state had relaxed regulations, the numbers boomed with many of them suspected of illegal activity. Now san jose has been battling the problem with a team of cops, planning and Code Enforcement officers, City Attorneys and the u. S. Department of labor to pressure businesses. But now under the new rules, cities like san jose hope to rein them in even more. Starting this year customers must enter through the front door. All tables must be two feet from walls and no sleeping quarters. Later today the city council will consider whether they can prohibit a parlor in the same location where one has been closed due to prostitution or human trafficking. The City Attorney will determine whether it will violate constitutional rights. 21 massage parlors in san jose have been shut down because of prostitution or human trafficking.
