It was a wet rainy night. This is at the napa county fairgrounds where people did their best to waterproof their tents. It brought hope that rain would help the firefighters get valley fire under control and it did. The rain has helped us immensely. The rain has slowed the progression of the fire. It gives me a improves the ability to get out there and make some good headway. Reporter fire crews kept working on the containment lines last night mopping up hot spots. The fire has burned more than 70,000 acres and hundreds of homes. The real concern now, downed power lines in the neighborhoods that have been burned. One man has been missing since the valley fire broke out on saturday. 69yearold leonard neft a retired reportedder with the mercury news spoke with his wife last on saturday night. She begged him to evacuate the lake county home. The last phone call, i told him please, hon, you need to leave. You need to leave. He said, i dont think i can get out now but im going to try. And i can hear he was scared. He was getting scared. He made a run for it and thats the last anybody heard from him. Their home burned down saturday night. And the 69yearolds burned out car was found later about a half mile down the road. This morning the butte fire has killed another person. A mans body was found in calaveras county. He is the second person to die in that fire. Pg e says one of its power lines may have hit a tree starting the fire but its waiting to hear from investigators. Butte fire now 47 contained. Its charred more than 71,000 acres. And president obama and Governor Brown discussed California Wildfires in a phone call yesterday. The president said yesterday he is praying for the state and emphasized his administration will keep supporting state and local firefighting efforts. They got a break last night with the rain. But hotter temperatures are coming. A big break with. 4 of rain in the area. A lot of moisture in the atmosphere this morning, as well. But as michelle was alluding to, we are entering into an extremely dry hot weather pattern. Today as you are stepping on out the door, the valley fire forecast suggests a dry weather pattern today, lower relative humidity, seasonal highs in the 70s, perhaps even low 80s. Santa rosa and napa both reporting visibility down to about a quarter mile at this hour. But, of course, this hour, you can always counted on delays at the bay bridge toll plaza with the metering lights on. Traffic is backed up from the foot of the maze. Once on the bridge expect heavy traffic on the incline section and heading for the nimitz 880 still rolling well in both directions through oakland just keep in mind there is a concert scheduled tonight at the oakland arena. But 128 has been reopened in both directions approaching ida clayton. As we check on the rest of the commute this morning, it has been a slow one for westbound 580. The earlier accident we had involving that motorcycle has been cleared up at grant line but take a look at what our sensors are picking up. Very long traffic now long delays between the 205 interchange and the dublin interchange this morning. So that commute is beginning to fill out. Be prepared for those backups this morning. 880 still looking good rolling well in both directions through the oakland area expect longer delays than usual for the evening commute. We have pockets of dense fog reported in santa rosa at 56 degrees. Also in the napa area visibility down to half mile in some areas. Its mild out the door in the 50s and 60s. We have pockets of fog this morning. And then ample sunshine returns. It will be warmer than yesterday but not as warm as this weekend when it heats up. This is a dissipating area of low pressure passing to the south and east leaving behind now High Pressure to nestle into the state of california. Once the fog lifts, we will have sunny skies and temperatures about 5 degrees below average in our inland areas but pretty seasonal next to the bay and the seashore. Inland lies today into the 80s, 77 ukiah. Well be watching and monitoring the high sierra because this weekend, we will probably see a red flag warning in effect all the way through yosemite for extremely dry conditions. Meanwhile that tsunami advisory in effect for San Luis Obispo to the south, our beaches three to four feet swells at santa cruz, with an air temperature of 77. Some of these swells building up to 5 feet out of the southwest. No advisories for any of our local beaches. Temperatures today along the coast 67 degrees in pacifica. 60s and 70s across the bay today. 70s on the peninsula, 80 towards windsor, otherwise low 80s to the east of the bay. Northwest breeze five to 15 Miles Per Hour. And because of the shift in that wind well have some hazy sunshine today. Notice by sunday, 102 degrees well inland. Brittle dry conditions there. Autumn officially arrives next wednesday. We do have the air quality today on the moderate side across the northern portion of the bay area. Again, due to that northwest wind. The building started to shake and more and more and the elevator started to rattle a bit and, um, and everybody realized we were having an earthquake. Reporter the worst damage was sustained in small towns to the north. Buildings crumpled and streets flooded by small tsunamis. Its horrible, this man says. I dont know what to do. I have no way of getting by. More than 5,000 miles away, Southern California also braced for dangerous waves, closing beaches and issuing their own tsunami advisory. Im actually tying my boat down and my neighbors boat so im making sure everyone around me is secure if we have trouble. While it made for a challenging night the rain has helped us i am americansly slowing the progress immensely, slowing the progression of the fire. Reporter overnight fire crews mopped up hot spots taking advantage of the cool wet weather. Its given the crews the ability to get out there and make some good headway. Reporter of course, the rain presents new challenges to firefighters, muddy dirt roads and slick hillsides. But the benefits far outweigh the bad things that the rain brings. Reporter a big danger right now in the burn zone, downed power lines. They are dangling in the same neighborhoods where more evacuees will return today to see if their homes still stand. You can believe all the rumors that you can but you have to see it firsthand. Reporter now, i was just speaking with one of the evacuees here. She said she spent a couple of nights in a hotel room and she could afford a hotel room but said she decided to come here and she is glad she did. She is happier here because theres a sense of community. They are starting to eat breakfast together now. In calistoga, anne makevoc, kpix 5. The American Red Cross is still asking for monetary donations to help people displaced by the valley fire. Make donations online or by phone. The bay area air Quality Management district has issued a warning this morning. They say smoke from the valley fire will start to make its way to the north bay over the next few days. Winds will shift this morning bringing the smoke into napa county especially. The air district says they will continue to monitor the situation throughout the day. Lets check in with roberta now. Because its going to get hot by the weekend. Very hot. Triple digits in the bay area and in the areas of the valley fire and the air quality will continue to deteriorate. Today we have pollution in the atmosphere. Moderate air quality in throughout the northern portion of the bay area. Just hazy everywhere else. The Labor Department reports that initial jobless claims fell by 11,000 to 264,000. Thats back to the level in july which was a fourdecade low. Housing construction not quite as good news as it pulled back a bit in august from the month before. But Housing Starts still up over 11 from a year ago. This was a big pull aback in the northeast and midwest. Permits were up quite a bit from a year earlier and higher than in july. The fed wrapped up its twoday meeting today. Most analysts dont think the central bank will raise rates. The problem with volatility in the stock market over the past month due to slowing concerns in china. And inflation remains very low. So southbound 680 is going to be heavy now almost to 580 and stays slow down the sunol grade towards the fremont side and the 580 commute has been very slow this morning. We had a motorcycle accident which was cleared about 40 minutes ago. But westbound 580 traffic is still very slow beyond the 205 interchange. Stays heavy through livermore into pleasanton. So expect those backups now for the 580 680 interchange. Southbound 680 again those backups begin from the dublin interchange stays heavy down the sunol grade because of that accident we have working now approaching sunol boulevard. Those are the hot spots this morning. If you plan to make the bay bridge commute, thats going to be slow for you. Its backed up through the madoff with a 35minute drive macarthur maze with a 35 minute drive time. Its the only bridge with major delays this morning. Some backups at the san mateo bridge but still moving, very crowded westbound approaching midspan, no major delays at the 88092 interchange yet.
