The Labor Day Weekend could be rough for bay area drivers because bart is shutting down the transbay tube halting service between San Francisco and the east bay. This is the second time we have seen this, this summer. No trains crossing the bay between midnight tonight until 4 00 on tuesday morning. So heads up anybody trying to get around the bay this weekend. Bart workers are going to be doing some maintenance jobs on the tracks near the transbay tube. They are going to be repairing and replacing rails near the tubes west oakland station entrance. That station is going to be closed completely. Buses will then run between San Franciscos embarcadero station and the 19th street station in downtown oakland. This Maintenance Work has been long overdue and the shutdown raises questions as to how long it will take to build the second one. Its a balance. We want to provide the maximum amount of service for riders and be sure that our crews can get in there and maintain trouble spots. Reporter now, in the meantime, if you are driving around the bay this weekend, expect increased traffic on the bay bridge, Richmond San Rafael bridge, san mateo bridge and dumbarton bridges. You will have to walk to the temporary transbay terminal from the embarcadero two blocks. Leave 30 minutes extra for your trip. If you are driving, leave extra time, as well. Theres going to be increased traffic on the bay bridge and a lot of that will dribble down to the san mateo bridge and dumbarton bridge and the Richmond San Rafael bridge. Anne makovec, kpix 5. Governor jerry brown has a brandnew billiondollar plan to fix our rundown roads. As kpix 5s betty yu reports, its going to cost all drivers in the state. Reporter no matter where we went in San Francisco, everyone seemed to agree on the roads. They need to be fixed. North beach is life off roading. Its terrible. Reporter governor jerry brown pitched a plan to fix state and local roads like these. Drivers would pay a yearly 65 highway user fee. He also wants to raise taxes for a billiondollar package but needs a twothirds majority. Kpix 5s phil matier says its going to be a tough sell. People who are concerned about the roads say that this isnt enough. Republicans say you can get money from elsewhere. Thats going to be part of the fight. But there is no other way to pay for the roads. Eventually we got to come up with the money. Reporter the fix our roads Coalition Supports the governors plan. So we are going to pay for it one way or the other. We either pay for it while sitting and waiting for our car to be repaired or we can pay much less and make sure our roads are fixed. Reporter he says that the average driver pays about 1,000 in repairs a year and by comparison, under the proposal, drivers would pay about 10 a month considerably less so thats why this group says the plan is the only way to go. Now, yesterday, the sheriff held an Emotional Press Conference condemning what she called a vicious violent and cowardly act by three correctional deputies. Matthew farris, jereh lubrin and Rafael Rodriguez were arrested yesterday on suspicion of murdering Michael James tyree in his jail cell. They were supposed to search his clothes and belongings but the coroner found he had lacerations to the liver and spleen causing internal bleeding. Sources say Video Evidence shows the three deputies entering the cell where they are accused of beating him to death reportedly over his refusal to take medicine. Each accused murderer was booked, fingerprinted and photographed at the Santa Clara County main jail, the very same jail where they are accused of taking the life of an inmate they swore to protect. Reporter tyree was in jail for petty theft and was supposed to be transferred to a Mental Health facility but there was no room there. Now, the three former deputies have been taken to the Alameda County jail where they are being held in protective custody without bail. All three have pleaded the fifth. Reporter bottom line is we are going to see jamups on all traffic. So if you can stay on your side of the bay this weekend, that is advised. There will be no bart trains running through the transbay tube from midnight tonight until 4 00 on tuesday morning. Maintenance trues will be shutting down the tube workers will be shutting down the tube. The station will be closed completely. Buses will run between San Franciscos embarcadero station and the 19th street station in downtown oakland. Now, during this closure, bart says at least the last time this happened about a month ago, it took commuters about 20 extra minutes across the bay. The key to making the buses work is to make sure traffic on the bay bridge isnt too bad. We have a dedicated lane to get the buses on to the freeway and then through the metering lights quickly but after that, we have to compete with all the other cars to get into San Francisco. Reporter and if you are trying to get on to that bus bridge, youre going to have to walk to the temporary transbay terminal here on the San Francisco side of the bay. Thats about two blocks from the embarcadero station which is where the trains will stop. If you are driving, keep in mind we are expecting extra traffic on the bay bridge. The woman refused to get out of the vehicle at first. She finally emerged as you see following commands to turn away and eventually get on her knees, she surrendered and was arrested. So bus bridges will be in place so plan for that and again busy expected this afternoon for folks getting out of town. A judge will decide whether Kate Steinles accused killer will stand trial for murder. Juan francisco lopezsanchez appeared in court in San Francisco yesterday. A judge is deciding if theres enough evidence to hold him for trial. The undocumented immigrant admits he fired the shot that killed kate steinle on pier 14 back on july 1. But he says the gun fired by accident. An attempt has failed for now to stop pg e from writing off a fine from the san bruno disaster. The state levied a fine of 1. 6 billion for the utilitys role in the deadly explosion and fire back in 2010. But under state law the company could say 115 million through a tax deduction. An 85yearold man named harry is being hailed as a hero this morning after taking on two burglars in a big way. When the pair broke into his el cerrito home on wednesday harry shot them. Police found one of the suspects with a bullet lodged in his head. The other suspect got away. Neighbors now call him dirty harry. He did the whole community a service by putting these bad guys out of action. And were very proud of him. Neighbors hope harrys actions will stop the recent crime wave in the el cerrito neighborhood. Governor jerry brown has a new plan to fix our crumbling roads and he wants drivers to pay for it. Yesterday, the governor pitched a plan to fix local and state roads like these. Drivers would pay a yearly 65 user fee which would generate 2 billion a year. They want to raise the gas tax by 6 cents. A Coalition Supports the plan. Well pay for it one way or another. We either pay for it while sitting and waiting for our car to be repaired, or we can pay much less and make sure our roads get fixed. The governors 3. 6 billion plan is a tough sell. Spencer stone landed at Travis Air Force base last night. Steve large was there. Buses will run between San Franciscos embarcadero station and the 19th street station in downtown oakland. Bart says this work has been long overdue. We are doing a single largest track replacement in bart history. Its 40yearold track and its time to be replaced. So on tuesday we are hoping for a smoother quieter safer ride through the transbay tube. Reporter for people who are taking that bus bridge, it takes about an extra 20 minutes, at least thats what we saw last month when they closed down the tube. Do keep in mind, if you are at the San Francisco embarcadero station you have to walk two blocks to the temporary transbay terminal.
