Thunderstorm suddenly rolled in. Good evening. 13 people were struck by lightning this afternoon at venice beach near los angeles. Two of those people are in Critical Condition tonight. At least three of them were on the boardwalk, others were in the water. One person had to be pulled out and given cpr. People at the beach say the next thing they knew there was thunder and lightning. One was hut by it could have been worse. We were out of the water f. We were in the water i dont think we would be here. We would be standing here with carbonfiber all over us. I saw a huge lightning bolt in the sky. It came down over there. It was then a really loud thunderclap. Another person was hit on a golf course on catalina island. It happened because of an unusual line of thunderstorms that moved through the southland. The doppler shows storms moving off to the north and east. It is all heading our way. But, by the time it gets this far north much of the punch is gone, we stand only a slight chance of thunderstorms over the next 24 hours. We will have your full forecast coming up. Cal fire says they are making progress on the sierra fire in the foothills, it destroyed 10 homes in seven outbuildings, hundreds more homes are threatened. One Evacuation Center people are waiting to find out if they have homes to go back to. In the hour that we have been here we have seen many people pull up right here and drop off whatever they can to help. Food, water, the red cross says they want people to know they dont need anything more. They set up a shelter here at the high school where roughly 20 people stayed overnight. Many evacuees are using their own rvs and mobile homes and staying in the parking lot. So, though it may seem like not many people are staying here or using the shelter they are. The reason the red cross knows this, they have been serving as many as 100 people during lunchtime. Now, we spoke to a woman who is here with her two children. They will be using the shelter for the first time this evening. They were asked to leave their homes on friday when the fire broke out. They were staying with family, up until this point. The fire is close. The fire is close to the house. We are not allowed to go home. The worst is nobody knows if the winds are going to change or get worse or better, if it will be put out. We were supposed to get a bridge that would last for 150 years, that was called a lifeline bridge that meant that it would be operational within 24 hours of a very serious earthquake near the area.
