Its part of a hightech debugging effort by google. Reporter its just after sunrise in fresno, california, and this van circling a residential neighborhood is making a rather unusual delivery. Its hard to see with the naked eye, but flying out of this tube are thousands of mosquitoes. New additions to the community. Are the mosquitoes going to bother us . But so far it hasnt been much of a problem. Reporter its not a problem for home owner bonnie smith because despite putting more bugs in the air, the experiment in this van could decrease the mosquitoes in her backyard. The only ones we release are male mosquitoes, which dont bite. And the males are sterile. So when they mate with the wild female, shell still produce and lay eggs, but theyll never hatch. Reporter linus is running this experiment. In total, theyre releasing a million mosquitoes a week for 20 week this is summer. So youre going to release 20 million mosquitoes in the fresno area. Once people understand that male mosquitoes dont bite and if were successful, were going to reduce the mosquito that is do bite them, people are usually thrilled. Reporter the wild mosquitoes do more than bite. They are targeting 80s ejypti that spread disease s including dengue fever and zika. To do that, they have spent millions of dollars building this lab, which breeds, sterilizes and rears millions of bugs. Then sorts them by sex to ensure only the males are released. Producing a million male mosquitoes a week, its quite a feat. Jody works for a mosquito program. They tried a smaller scale version of this last summer, but only released 80,000 pests. Now theyre able to multiply that by a factor of 25. We really needed to have the ability to rear of number of males that would be needed to effect control. Reporter but partnering with the google family of companies comes with its own complications. I always have a concern when google says its going to do anything. Reporter john simpson has kept a close eye on google and its subsidiaries for years. He sees nothing wrong with the science and safety of the experiment. Its what comes next that concerns him. In the future, if they have all the proprietary information, you have to meet their terms and they can essentially dictate those terms. You then end up being at their mercy. We dont know how were going to go to market with this as a business. Right now were just focused on showing it works. Reporter if it does work, it could become a model for communities around the world. People here dont seem to mind acting as test subjects for vei nothe future. In a way, its neat to be a part of it in a small way. Reporter researchers in fresno are monitoring traps throughout these neighborhoods and are hoping to see a drop in mosquito populations by the end of summer.
