Future. On highway 1 near pacifica, devon, kpix 5. A crash killed a man today in pleasant hill. It happened on taylor boulevard north of withers avenue. The chp says a woman lost control of a toyota mini van, veered to the left and hit a lexus, the impact partially ejected a passenger from the lexus, even though he was wearing a seat belt. He died from head trauma. Two other people in the lexus were hurt. In neighboring walnut creek one intersection has seen dozen of serious crashes over several years. Kpix 5 is at the spot on ignacio valley road where there have been lots of wrecks. Hey brian, of all of the accidents in recent years, 8 of them happen at this busy intersection. And this is not the only trouble spot here. Ignacio valley road, the busiest and most dangerous road. Traffic gets really going. A study produced for the Apple Law Firm and shared with the Bay Area News Group looks at the 800 plus accidents in walnut creek from 2010 to 2015. 65 of those happen at the intersection of ignacio valley and oak grove. I have pulled my share of cars out of this particular intersection. Tow truck driver russell says hes had close calls at this intersection. Someone, excessive speed, not paying attention, actually crashed into the car that i was getting ready to load up. The intersection is the first major traffic stop coming down a hill for drivers traveling into walnut creek from concord and pittsburgh. Many drivers use ignacio valley as a shortcut between east county and highway 24. I try to avoid this intersection and use the backroads because it gets so congested here. The study finds of the 12 most dangerous intersections in walnut creek, five of them were along ignacio valley road. Including ignacio valley and san carlos drive which recorded 42 injury accidents. Drivers blame high traffic volume, speed, and distracted driving. Ive even watched people eating cereal while theyre driving. Okay. You know, i get it. Youre hungry, but pull over okay. Elsewhere in the city, tray boulevard and cantalero drive reported more accidents. Last week i had to slam on the brakes because they didnt see me. She has had many close calls. A fast moving brush fire is burning close to homes in a San Bernardino neighborhood. Its charred more than 100 acres w. Hot and dry weather the flames are spreading quickly. The fire broke out around 3 30 yesterday afternoon. So far no homes have been damaged. Meanwhile residents in Mariposa County who were forced to evacuate because of a wild fire returning home to find their belongings blackened and their houses destroyed. Evacuation orders have been lifted for mariposa, a small town devastated by the debt Detwiler Fire. Its burned 70,000acres since it broke out last weekend. Destroying 140 structures. Including 60 homes. 1500 buildings are threatened. Cal fire says one of the biggest concerns right now, dangerous ash pots. If a tree burns and the stump is under ground where the roots are, that can burn under ground. But it can be a three or four foot deep ash pot thats very hot. And theyre around the homes and things like that. We dont want to let people on their property and have them fall into one of those. The Detwiler Fire is 30 contained now. Crews contained two separate brush fires off skyline boulevard in the peninsula. They broke autojust south of page mill road about a mile southwest of portollo valley. They only burned an acre total. Fire crews say if it had been windier up there, things could have been much worse. Another warm weekend as we look live toward the east bay. Nothing but blue out there. Plenty of warm weather as well in the east bay, warm weather ushered along by High Pressure billing in over southern california. Strong high, warm temps, itll stay that way through tomorrow. While we dont have red flag warnings posted in the bay area, there are warnings posted in the sierra for much of tomorrow because of a thunderstorm threat. Dry lightning could spark fires with the high temps and low humidity, that could be bad news. And outflow from thunderstorms could produce winds up to 50 miles per hour. So fire threat remains throughout california. But there are red flag warnings specifically posted for the sierra as for what happens for us, well have that in the forecast in a few minutes. Muni riders should expect to see station closures starting this weekend. The agency is testing its new light rail vehicles. Technicians are checking for vibrations on the tracks, electronic sensors are logging how smoothly the cars move above and below ground. Suddenly, a man holding a yellow bag wearing a transformers mask flashes by and heads to the register. Jerry watches as the man threatens the clerk with a fake gun and eventually a buck knife demanding money. Police investigators say the man in the mask is 30yearold ryan michael flores. And what flores doesnt realize is craig jerry made up his mind with a chair in hand, he plans to stop the robbery attempt. Jerry hits flores from behind and a fight ensues. Investigators say jerry was stabbed in the neck during the struggle but managed to wrestle away the knife and stab flores several times. Flores was flee the store and was later arrested by police. Pleasanton city leaders stand by the decision adding they werent aware of the safety issue until the complaint brought it to their attention. They denied they intentionally Double Billed customers but they have agreed to refund an average of 5. 70 to every one of its 220,000 ride payers. It happened after changing billing methods. But customers say thats not a good enough answer. Theyre going to over charge us. They should let us know. And reimburse us. They should send us a note or letter. And let us know, you know, whats going on. Why they over charged us. If it was a mistake. Then thats okay. But if theyre being dishonest, thats something different. Theyre set to hold a hearing to see if consumers are owed more money. Seniors will soon have to pay eight times the usual price for a lifetime pass to our national parks. It used to cost 10. Were seeing it at wild care. I suspect its consistent across the bay area. Spokesperson alison says wild care usually gets 40 to 60 skunks a year. All ready this year, theyve passed that total with 75. And no sign of stopping. Shes fostering five. And with that many skunks marooned or orphaned, everyone plays a part in raising them. I have them old enough so they can spray. But that hasnt happened yet. And they dont know me per se, but they understand the routine. They know when im coming and i open the cage theyre used to associating that habit with eating. The spike was caused by the wet winter. That made skunks food source thrive. While the species is infamous for their defense mechanism, wild care says they make great neighbors. The things that dig through your lawn and eat your flowers, your skunk friend is eating those things. And the rats and the mice that run through your yard. If you have a skunk in the yard or the neighborhood hes doing a really good service for you. But when theyre rescued this young, they start out on formula and get fed every three hours and then move to real food when theyre this size. Follow the racetrack along the blue line and go through the red rectangles as fast as you can. The drones are insanely fast, finishing the quarter mile track in seconds. 103 miles per hour. Mark is the ceo of the Aerial Sports League and said sporting events like these helps put drones in a more positive light. Not only are they seeing drones being used for sports and games but theyre being used in education, in science and engineering programs. So the stem possibilities and the educational possibilities in addition to these kind of sporting events have really made drones mainstream. Pilot levi dickson is one of the heavy favorites and says drones are moving out of the fringe realm of geeks and nerds. Now theyve seen it on tv. They hear about it on the news.
