Earlier they went to a church on harrison street as fire crews kept the fire from spreading to nearby buildings. Hundreds of people got an Early Morning wakeup caught to get out. Police knocked on the door real hard and you got to get out of here. So i was like, moved my car . No, you got to take yourself and get out of here. You can feel the heat. My mom said you got to wake up, get yourself and get out. Holy crap, thats the biggest fire i have ever been this close to. Its not a house fire. It was it is giant. It was all the way up into the sky. And i thought maybe we should get away from this. Hours after the fire, Police Escorted the people who live at 100 grand back into their building but only for essential items. The power was still turned off, some people had to walk up 19 floors to get back home. We can give you an overview of the construction project from google earth. The building known as al that waverly was set to be completed next spring and it would include 196 market rates apartments and up to 31,500 square feet of retail with parking for residents underground. Reporter oakland fire investigators are working with the Alameda County Arson Task Force and atf agents to find the cause. Obviously, something that concerns all of us. Its our jobs to make sure that everyone feels safe in this city and to do everything that we can to prevent either intentional or accidental tragedies. Reporter city leaders say the job site had motion sensing camera similar to this one. Investigators will look into the footage. A sign says guard on duty. This is the fifth fire that destroyed a building under construction in recent years. The last fire happened on the Emeryville Oakland border. Someone burned it down twice, may of this year and july of last year. Atf agents released Surveillance Footage of the suspected arsonist. On october 31, 2016, a fire destroyed a building on lester avenue near lake merritt. No cause for that fire yet. Back in june of 2012, investigators say an arsonist burned down a building next to the west oakland bart station. It was supposed to be senior housing. All of these buildings were similar in stages of construction. The wood framing was complete. But before Fire Protection materials like drywall and sprinkler systems were installed. Some worry the motive might be opposition to new developments. This type of development is what oakland needs to get through this moment where rents are skyrocketing, where housing is in high demand. This is a loss for our city and for this region right now. And that is why we are so determined to ensure that we get to the bottom of what caused it. But i talked to one builder, who says that he is spending about a quarter of a Million Dollars on his security system. And he says if he is going to put more money into it, he would rather put it into a temporary fire sprinkler system. He thinks that will be more effective. Interesting. The two men charged in last years deadly oakland warehouse fire were set to enter a plea in court this morning. Instead, their attorneys asked the judge for a delay. Max harris and Derick Almena are accused of turning the warehouse into a housing and party space without permits or safety systems. 36 people were killed when the wear hose known as the ghost ship caught fire during a party in december. There is not enough evidence against the clients, the defense say. They say they will enter a not guilty plea and ask for bail to be reduced at a later date. We havent received all the discovery yet. The discovery we have received and reviewed is extremely positive for max harris. All the evidence shows that max harris did exactly what a tenant should do in that situation, he tried his best at all times, he tried to save lives. He did the right thing. The next court date for both men is august 4. A mail carrier in the hospital after being shot while working her route in east oakland around noon atv at avenel and ban crot about a half mile from mill college. She had just dropped off letters and got back into the van when a bullet hit her in the hip. Our rounds hit the van. Inspectors and detectives are working the case. She is now in stable condition. A store clerk was arrested after chasing down two teens who tried to rob a smoke shop in rohnert park. It happened at the store on commerce boulevard. It all ended at alicia park about a mile away. Police say the clerk ran down and hit one of the teens with his car. The 15yearold suspect will be okay. Both the teens and the clerk were arrested. So its normally the perfect time for those looking to make a splash in the banks of the russian interference, but this year part of the fun will be off limits. Locate west of guerneville, monte rio beach is closed. As kpix 5s emily turner reports, it is all due to high levels of bacteria found in the water. Reporter for those looking to beat the heat this weekend, you will have to bypass monte rio beach in Sonoma County. Locals say its the first time in decades the Health Department has closed it to swimming and is telling everyone to stay out, especially children, the elderly and pets. Coliform bacteria is detected and could cause illness. Reporter warning signs are posted on the beach along with a big notice at the entrance. E. Coli levels more than four times the limit prompted the closure. That clearly didnt stop some locals, but those we warned made a different decision. We were coming down with the dogs and knew it was a public beach. No, we cant use it. So well have to drive somewhere else. We are going to drive upstream. Get out of the e. Coli. Reporter the Health Department says they are still trying to determine a cause. But the manager of this park says that over the holiday weekend, there were about 4,000 people here. Justin jacobs was heading to Salt Lake City when he spotted the flames. He then posted this video to twitter. The fire broke out around 4 30 in the morning at 24th and valdez near oaklands auto row. 80 firefighters rushed to the scene. They were pushed back because a construction crane was spinning in the middle of the flames. Crews fought the fire from the outside using ladder trucks. Their main focus, keeping it away from nearby homes and businesses. With a fire this size, it is miraculous that we have had no loss of life, no injuries, and nothing more than what appears to be cosmetic damage to any ancillary or surrounding structures. During the drought, hatcheries had to use trucks to save the fish. In 2015, the hatcheries trucked 100 all the little baby fish about three, four inches long. And its that crop of babies thats coming back now. Those that were trucked 100 in 2015 so its paying off. Reporter the California Department of fish and wildlife agrees that the joint effort saved millions of fish from certain death during the drought. And its not just a fishing industry thats grateful. James is the mayor of tangier. His family has been here for generations. They have watched it gradually sink under the waves. If we get a severe noreaster or something, you can make a mark where the shoreline is. After the storm, the mark is well offshore happening that fast. Reporter since 1850 the island has loss 66 of its land. In about 100 years, it will be gone. Researchers say one cause is rising sea levels due to Climate Change. But tangiers more immediate problem is something called wave induced erosion. The island is literally being washed away by the waves and will eventually disappear. We need help from the erosion. In petaluma, 87. And in san rafael, 86 degrees. San rafael was plenty hot today, too. Ukiah will be down to 101 and lakeport 102. 102 at clearlake and saint helena 102 degrees. Hard to imagine were talking about things cooling but we are are. Tomorrow temperatures or at least not as warm as today. Cooler to the 90s inland. A heat bump toward the end of next week.
