Room in a certain place and time. You know what . Sorry the First Amendment allows to us say those things. You cant go and say, oh, lets go kill a bunch of people. No, you cant do that. But you can say what you believe. Ann coulter doesnt say anything like that. Reporter what about bus jaws you can do something doesnt mean you have to . And it upsets people. To come to our event . Reporter okay, his answer to that was that these people came to his demonstration. And he asked why they came to him demonstration. Bottom line here, the numbers are down. Well keep an eye on it. Joe vazquez, kpix 5. We have seen almost as many police today as we have seen protestors. Berkeley cops faced criticism for their hands off approach to the last few protests. Today they respond with a massive show of force on the cal campus and around civic center park. Kpix 5s Susie Steimle is near that park right now. Susie. Reporter veronica, todays been a very different day than the protests we have seen in the past at berkeley. This is a pretty good example behind me of what security has looked like throughout the day. Police are here and they are visible and they are in the crowds. But they have a challenge. Its not just one group of protestors protesting one thing. Its two groups that oppose each other. On one side, we have conservatives who support President Trump. On the opposite side of the street youre seeing antitrump protestors. And police are keeping them separated. There are Police Officers everywhere. There are at least 100 Police Officers around me. Reporter in contrast to previous protests today Police Enforcement was obvious from the beginning. Theres still conflicts here. Usa usa usa reporter its just controlled. Reporter officers came out in droves lining every inch of berkeleys sidewalks, batons and ziptie handcuffs at the ready backpacks searches, weapons confiscated. They just took a can of oc spray, pepper spray. This is not what were used to at all. This is completely militarized. I know some students have gotten arrested for no crime. Reporter while students complain about the show of force thats what critics say was missing during previous protests. I give them a cplus. They put up their zone of exclusion and allowed them to come up and trample it down. Lets hope they do something. The police have a very difficult job of trying to balance the First Amendment rights of everyone. Reporter Howard Jordan would know. He is the former Oakland Police chief. Jordan says given the number of officers on hand already, and the advance notice for todays protest, police should be able to keep berkeley in control. Then calling in additional help could take hours. But if you know in advance, then those hours are reduced to maybe 30 minutes or less. Reporter students have told me theres been a sense of anxiety leading up to today because they knew these protests were going to take place. Even though things are dwindling down here, they say that anxiety is still around because no one knows what might happen with protests at nightfall. Live in berkeley, Susie Steimle, kpix 5. Kpix 5s da lin is on the cal campus where police have managed to keep things quiet. Da. Reporter a peaceful day on campus. The university is not taking chances. You can see a lot of Police Officers are still here at sproul plaza making sure everything is safe. How much does ann coulter care about free speech . They should we invades the country pulled the leaders and [ indiscernible ] christianities. Reporter this was as heated as it got this afternoon at cal campus. Much more civilized and quite different from the recent demonstrations that resulted in violence. At sproul plaza, the Police Officers outnumbered the pro trump and antitrump demonstrators combined. But that didnt stop antitrump protestors from comparing the president to hitler and criticizing ann coulter. Its just a false pretext to conceal their real agenda which is the silencing of dissent and imposing fascism. Reporter since the antitrump folks were so vocal, i had to ask, november elections, did you vote . Im not come on, man. Reporter another answer the trump protestor also said she did not vote in the november election. Now, the reason why i asked that question is, i wanted folks to know that some of these folks are strictly just professional protestors. They did not vote for anyone. So that was one point i wanted to get across. By the way, University Police arrested two people here one with a knife. Live at ucberkeley, im da lin, kpix 5. Kpix 5s emily turner is in San Francisco, where the historic cable cars might need to modernize their payment methods. Reporter you know, thousands of people ride these cable cars every, single day. Most pay cash. But according to sfmta not all that cash made it where it was supposed to go. Its a 30 million business. Its been running for 140 years. So when money goes missing sfmta notices. When they ran the numbers, two cable car conductors names came up. Two people who were thieves. They were stealing money that rightfully belongs to the agency. Reporter last wednesday, this man, 61yearold albert williams, was arrested for allegedly stealing cash fares. When police searched his home, they found 32,000 in cash and a packed suitcase. Then yesterday, another operator david reyes, was arrested for the same crime. Not surprising in todays world. But i just i got a receipt and pay cash at the little window. I dont know how else it works. Reporter police would take the cash fare offered by riders but not give a receipt. No receipt, no record of payment. So that money went right into their pockets. Again, if you get caught, you can suspended but he lost out altogether. [ indiscernible ] not worth it. Not worth it at all. Reporter so now sfmta is looking at the possibility of doing away with the cash fare option at all. It almost seems like cash is an antiquated system and you would have moved away from it before. Reporter sfmta says they dont know how long this potentially has been going on or how much money was stolen but they say their angry because if its in fact happened with these men it casts a bad light on the other conductors.
