Reporter that lead comes from years of industrial pollutants, freeways that spewed leaded gasoline fumes well into the 80s, and an even more potent source, aging pipes and paint. People were talking about the problem in this story we did five years ago. The density of old houses, houses before 1940s, lead was in paint for a long time. Every time someone scraped off the old paint, those particles drifted. Reporter in the fruitvale area of rate among 500 children tested 7. 5 , worse than flint, michigan. Longterm exposure to dangerous lead levels causes everything from anemia to learning disabilities. Children are particularly vulnerable. Its disturbing that it wasnt caught earlier. Reporter this woman expecting her second child in the spring, her first child is already sick. She is diabetic. Reporter what does the public need to do with information right here and now . For me its what do i do . Stop drinking the water altogether and so im waiting for the county and the federal people to step forward and be able to share information with us. What is it that we do next . Reporter okay. So how widespread is this . Well, the toxicity levels were only detected here in the fruitvale area, no other place in oakland or the bay area. Are there things that families can do in the meantime while we wait for more information from the county . Reporter exactly. So councilman gallo made phone calls today. California Ridesharing Companies are facing stricter background checks. Kpix 5s melissa caen here to explain the new driver requirements. Reporter allen, you guys might remember last year San Francisco and l. A. District attorneys did some checks on some uber drivers and they found more than 20 who had been convicted of serious felonies. Now a new state law allows Rideshare Companies to see more of a drivers criminal history. It also holds Companies Like uber and lyft accountable for what they find. I dont feel safe alone at night with uber drivers. Reporter chris brick says she has been sexually assaulted twice by uber drivers. These people are not being investigated properly. Reporter right now, in california, background checks can only show 7 years of criminal history but starting next week, there will be an exception to that 7year limit. Ridesharing Companies Like uber and lyft now get to look at a drivers entire criminal lift no matter how long ago the person was convicted. Lyft and uber did not oppose the new law. Heres an uber spokesman. We are currently limited in state law to our background check to a 7year lookback. So we have had instances where someone with a serious offense further back, um were on the platform so with this bill we can look back for a lifetime. Reporter the new law imposes a fine up to 5,000 each time a company is found with a driver who is on a sex offender database or ever convicted of a violent felony or terrorism. The company also cant use drivers with certain misdemeanor convictions in the past seven years, assault and battery, Domestic Violence, driving under the influence or bribery and extortion are prohibited. The aclu says the law goes too far. Old convictions can appear on records which people have served their time and rehabilitated. It is important that we continue to provide reentry opportunities for people following convictions. Reporter an assemblyman who wrote the bill says being a driver is different from other jobs. Individuals at their most vulnerable especially a lot of women out there. So it is an issue. People use uber for the kids. Reporter taxi drivers in places like San Francisco have to be fingerprinted as part of their background checks and some members of the legislature wanted the same system used for rideshare services. But that didnt make it into the final version of the bill. Assemblyman cooper though says that he will revisit the issue of fingerprints if there continue to be problems. Melissa caen, kpix 5. U. S. Two men accused of killing a man inside a target store are in court. It happened on Christmas Eve and police say that frankie and Jesse Archuleta stabbed the man in the toy aisle in front of the mans children. They discovered an illegal marijuana grow operation there. Officials is have arrested her associate wesley brian. They allegedly hired two men to murder a man from antioch. They are both from tennessee. Authorities say wright shot and killed 38yearold [ non english name ] in july. He was in his car at a stop light waiting to make a left turn in unincorporated alameda county. Thats when police say wright came up and shot him. A seismologist says if it were to happen in a city this would have been a much different story. The good news is that it was in a very sparsely populated area. I started when i was really young, i was 16 and now i, you know, how many years is it . So, you know, 65 years. So i have had a wonderful career and its been a joy. I have had a great life. A great experience being in show business. I love it. I love film. Thats why i enjoy being here tonight. She and her daughter had a complicated relationship. Their bond was documented in the movie postcards from the edge which was based on Carrie Fishers book by the same name. Just minutes ago reynolds son todd said in a statement, the stress of his sisters death, quote, was too much for reynolds. He added, quote, she is now with carrie and we are all heartbroken. A painful betrayal reynolds was able to joke about the scandal years later. I was a girl scout. I i really was very a simple little girl and thats what i was and he fell madly in love with elizabeth. Now i understand so many years later and its in the past. Reporter her second and third marriages also ended in divorce. Each time, causing reynolds financial pain. However she had quietly been collecting hollywood memorabilia over the years that would prove a wise investment. In 2011, reynolds sold Marilyn Monroes white subway dress at auction for 4. 6 million. [ music ] reporter she also never quit performing. Although she stepped away from film for much of her career, reynolds continued to entertain on broadway stages and in las vegas nightclubs.
