They took the stage separately answered questions about national security, the military and veterans issues. Kpix 5 political analyst melissa caen is here to weigh in on the nominees. But first lets hear how trump responded to an earlier statement that he knows more about isis than current u. S. Generals do. I think under the leadership of barack obama and Hillary Clinton, the generals have been reduced to rubble. They have been reduced to a point where its embarrassing for our country. You have a force of 30,000 or so people, nobody really knows, but probably 30,000 people, and i can just see the great as an example general George Patton spinning in his grave as isis, we cant beat. Still, of course, donald trump has made repeated references to the military saying its a disaster, that the things that the military is doing are disastrous but its a very interesting line you have to walk when youre in room full of current and former military members. Really have to separate the Current Administration from the folks who are actually there. And those in the military carrying out the orders. Thats what he did today in response to several questions by matt lauer who pressed him on the issue of why he made this statement about the generals and at no point did he admit to even making the statement [chuckling] much less admit that he ever believed that he actually knows more about isis than the generals so he definitely dialed it back a bit for todays audience. In the meantime Hillary Clinton took a number of questions from matt lauer about her private email server scandal. And they she admitted she made a mistake and steered it back to her record with veterans. Im asking to be judged on the totality of my record. What i have done for our veterans as first lady, as senator, what i have done for gold star families, working with them to increase the death benefits from 12,000 to 100,000, working with republicans like Lindsey Graham to get tricare for our National Guard members who didnt have healthcare unless they were deployed. So she is really hammering remember record. Thats where she really shines. Her experience, her knowledge of International Affairs in the military. Its something she had to really focus on and she did though repeatedly come back to her statement to the refrain that donald trump is temperamentally unfit, according to her opinion, to be the commanderinchief. And did she really get were out of time but did she get trump to come off script. He stayed on script. Thank you. Coming up, not such a happy ending.
