Roughly 40,000 people come through the Downtown Berkeley bart plaza every day. Its the heart of the city and the heart of the community. Reporter the heart will get a major transformation. The rotunda gone, benches gone, the bricks replaced. In a year, it will look like this a glass structure with a lot of open space. The leading architect says its about openness and transparency. Its the way of transportation and the peoples lives converging. Reporter perchloroethylene leaders say this is the first of many projects turning downtown into transitfriendly. They plan to reconfigure shattuck avenue, add a bike lean on hearst avenue and build a new garage with 720 parking spots and space for 300 bicycles. Its going to add a lot of people. Its going to be more busy. Reporter New Buildings are popping up around the plaza. Across the street, developers will build a Highrise Hotel and a block away, the city approved a large apartment building. The transit improvements are meant to keep up with the growth. For safety, vibrancy, transit and economic vitality, its a pretty good winwinwin for the berkeley community. Purely aesthetic, the design is great. Reporter most people love it. Some hate what it will do to the homeless. This might be a play by the city and count to displace people. Ridiculous fight against Homeless People . Like taking away the sleeping benches . Reporter some people want the city to use the construction money to build homeless shelters. The city says these are transit grants strictly for transit projects. The renovations are expected to be done by september of next year with a price tag of more than 7 million. A Troubling Development in berkeley. The city has its first homicide of the year. Just before midnight, officers found a man with at least one gunshot wound on mable street near burnett in the southwest part of the city. Police think the victim was targeted. No arrests so far. A former san jose bouncer will serve jail time and probation for a deadly confrontation outside a bar. The man was sentenced to eight months in jail but the Deputy District Attorney says he will likely serve just four months because he has no felony history. He pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. It was for the death of a man in march 2015. The two got into an argument outside a lounge. Rojas punched esquivel and knocked him unconscious and esquivel died at the hospital. The family sued the lounge. Smoky skies in the tri valley today. You can really feel the breeze out here. We are live in dublin about 1,000 feet above the tri valley. Its very interesting that the source of the smoke from some of these ceasefires more than 250 miles the source of the smoke from some of these first to is more than 250 miles. The wind and atmosphere is sending it like a highway in the atmosphere and tracking it into the bay area in the jet stream. You saw it or smelled it this morning. [ signal breakup ] the winds are coming up from the south and its taking the smoke to the fires burning as close as Monterey County as far away as Southern California and taking that smoke and transporting it right into the bay area. So lots of smoke and haze in the bay area today. As for why its happening, well, we can see this right here. You can see the highest concentration of the smoke in the south bay and east bay. Were standing right under one of the spots in the trivalley. That red that you see to our south and to our east, if your perspective is San Francisco, thats where the highest concentration of smoke and haze is right now throughout the bay area. I want to show you something though as we look off in the distance here. You can see that the lower level mountains are clearing out. But the higher level mountains are not. Theres a reason for that. The marine layer is only about 2,000 feet thick. Thats a strong west wind right now sending the smoke away. But get above that marine layer, were still stuck with the smoke and still stuck with the haze and we will be for part of the weekend. The sevenday forecast is coming up. Thank you. The wildfire burning near big sur now getting the undivided attention of the feds. Monterey county weekly reports the u. S. Forest service is getting ready to take full command of the soberanes fire. It has burned more than 81,000 acres and is 60 contained. It was started by an illegal campfire on july 22. And firefighters making some significant gains in Southern California. The bluecut fire burning east of los angeles is now 26 contained. Preliminary assessments show 96 singlefamily homes have been destroyed in that fire. The bay area job market is booming again. New state numbers show california added more than 36,000 jobs last month. Thats the best performance in a year. East bay led the way adding 9700 jobs the best showing in six years. And yet, um, some people were thinking, you know, maybe he is going to pivot to be more president ial try to sort of bring more people over to, um, to join his campaign to vote for him. This does not to be a video aimed at swing voters. You can look at the little voting results. You can see the economy is by far the number one issue for some people followed by the National Security with immigration, um, third place and so i know some people are very disappointed that trump took the opportunity right after the reset when everybody is paying attention to lead with the immigration, um, commercial instead of something about the economy or about National Security [ sic ] so i think some level of disappointment there among republicans who are again still waiting, um, for that big pivot. Um, some people have also noted that the ad sort of resembles an ad that ran when governor pete wilson was touting proposition 107 that people credit with the decline of the Republican Party in california in the deck said since then being antiimmigration. So i think generally certainly Trump Supporters will enjoy this. But but if you are not a trump supporter its unclear if he is going to pull new with this. His targeted marketing, the ad is not running everywhere. The ads are targeting those key battleground states where trump has ground to make up. Polls out the last week show Hillary Clinton is up 11 points in pennsylvania and 9 in florida, North Carolina 5 points in ohio. Clintons campaign spent 60 million on ads and she has a lot more money to spend than that too. That is true and she is actually pulled back on some of the ads because she is ahead so far in some states. She is already reshuffling resources and say we dont need to continue to do ads in state like colorado for example. Also we are seeing the softer side of trump. For the first time yesterday, i heard that he admitted to actually regretting some of his comments . He has already though clarified that [chuckling] lets listen to what he had to say and jump in and sometimes in the heat of debate, and speaking on a multitude of issues, you, you dont choose the right words or you say the wrong things. I have done that. And believe it or not, i regret it. Okay. That is kind of unusual. Is this a sign of a new shifted . Well in his tone maybe in the tone of the campaign . That speech certainly got a lot of people excited that maybe we are going to see the more president ial donald trump. Ill tell you he has already walked back the regret comment when asked whether he had when asked about his apology he made very clear that that was not an apology it was an express of regret that people could sort of take however they need to and already today, he has made some statements about black voters and their support for him that, um, has offended a number of people so, uhm, its not clear how long that trump we saw give the speech that you just showed is going to be able to continue out there, already, um, showing some, um, some signs of [ overlapping speakers ] you heard people cheer. They liked that side of him. Certainly. People in that room are very excited. But he needs voters outside his base right now. Thank you. For kids who are the first in their family to go to college, there are other important lessons to learn if you want to get a good job. Everything from how to answer a phone to what to wear. Giving a tour of the puc building is just one of many tasks for the two students this summer. They are working with project pull, a program in San Francisco that teaches promising High School Students from various backgrounds what government work is all about. But the two are both College Juniors with students rising above and they are team leaders. I have a whole team of interns that i manage so im teaching leadership skills. Im teaching them to speak up, be more open to getting to know people. Reporter the college aged interns are each in charge of 16 high schoolers. What are you working on . Reporter this is the first step into the professional world for the High School Students and the two students as well and the lesson are many. Early is on time and on time is late. You dont have your headset on your ears while youre walking. When people are walking by, greet them. Reporter internships are crucial for students rising above who cant always depend on parents to help them develop a career. Simms just finished high school at east Side College Prep when by met her a private school for poor children in east palo alto. She had been living in the dormitory. How many years did you live here . 3. 5. Reporter it was longest she had ever lived in one place. Her dad was on the street a lot. She was only 8 when her mother left her at her grandmothers. She was in and out of jail. To be honest, like she is not really she is not really in my life. Even if she is out of jail like she will call me once every three months. Reporter in all, there are 11 siblings, halfbrothers and sisters, they move constantly, mountain view, palo alto, san jose, on and on. How do you deal with that . School. School. I loved school. Reporter now she is a junior at Wesleyan University in connecticut and one of many students rising above learning from summer internships, as well. So everybody is cooling off and thankfully the air quality is improving because that marine air is cutting off the tap of low level haze and smoke. Overnight tonight 50s fremont, 57 napa, 52. San francisco 55. Pacific 51. Sunrise 6 30 in the morning. So whats going on in the atmosphere tomorrow . We are looking at a continuation of mainly moderate air quality. It looks and sometimes smells a lot works than it was today. Only the east bay had an unhealthy air quality. Tomorrow, no spare the air day. Moderate air quality top to bottom. That said, there will be some haze and smoke in the sky once again tomorrow. Low pressure stays to our south. What that will do keep that tap flowing from the ocean that chilly ocean air above that chilly ocean water will continue to filter into the bay area keeping temperatures very close to average.
