The process of hollowing out the community. Reporter to the baby boomers who are able to buy home decades ago and now call steve and kate entitled millennial brats . They didnt have to deal with all cash offers. They didnt have to deal with foreign investors. They werent saddled with 100,000 of college debt. All of those people thought it was perfectly normal and fine and sane for middle class people like teachers and plumbers to own houses in palo alto but those seem people are now turning around same people are now turning around saying you should be fine with renting forever. Thats your lot in life. Nobody listens when you say you cant afford to live here. You know why people are listening i have no idea but all the normal people who make up a normal community are being priced out. And the question is, is that really what we want for our future . Reporter we tried to get reaction from the mayor but through a spokesman the city of palo alto had no comment other than to say that the planning commissioner position is voluntary and that they are looking for her replacement. By the way, steve and kate have bought a house and are moving to santa cruz next month. Live in palo alto, kiet do, kpix 5. Palo altos planning commissioner isnt only one. Even the ceo of a credit union says San Francisco is just too expensive. After years of helping his clients buy their own homes, San Francisco federal Credit Unions ceo steven stap says that he realized he didnt have the means to do the same. The longtime renter decided to pick up and move to portland, oregon telling the San Francisco business times, its a gutwrenching decision but economics are driving us away. New at 6 00, those rents may be cooling in San Francisco. Zillo reports they rose just 5. 5 for the year ending in june. The year before, they had skyrocketed more than 16 . Kpix 5s Wilson Walker looks at who is getting a break and who isnt. I wouldnt call it a crash. Id call it a significant softening. Reporter what started with some whispering among agents is now the buzz of the San Francisco rental market. I would agree, the rental market appears to be softening. We have been seeing it soften over the past three or four months. Reporter yes, the peak of the insanity might be behind us. At higher ends rents might be dropping. Reporter we are in the bustling tech infused south of market neighborhood and if you want to find a spot where the rental market is measurably softening a little bit, this is it, all right . So lets start up here at 399 fremont. Living is amplified, shiny new glass tower, and right across the street, you have 340 fremont, just two blocks down harrison theres the jasper where you can settle for extraordinary. If you go back to folsom and fremont, you will solaire still being finished up. One thing they all have in common, they are all rolling out incentive packages to get people to move in. Yeah. The higher end of the market has definitely suffered the most just like it did in the 2008, 2009 and 2010 economic crash. Thats less people looking for 10,000 that is two bedrooms. Reporter before you ditch your three roommates and look for a one bedroom we should talk about the other end of the rental market. If you are an average earn er and looking for an apartment now i would say you probably have more flexibility and options but not much more relief in your pocketbook. Reporter all it takes is a quick glance at craigslist to see things are still incredibly expensive here but like an afternoon fog drifting in over the city, things are in fact cooling down. Its over. Reporter in San Francisco, scott walker, kpix 5. Besides a few months free rent some of those New Buildings are offering fancy bikes as incentives. Marin county is the home of Mountain Biking and a mecca for cyclists. But for that reason, its also a gold mine for crooks looking to steal bikes and never more so than right now. Its always been kind of a Common Thread for a number of years but the reality is for unknown reasons we have had a dramatic spike over the last couple of months. Reporter the Sheriffs Office is working to figure out why and who is responsible. Just this week, Novato Police arrested a man on drug charges who had three bikes and 33 frames in his home. As someone on the receiving end of theft, Katie Hendricks hopes police will catch the police who stole hers. Its terrible. Actually it happened to me valentines day so it was a pretty sour moment to start the day on. Reporter she hasnt been able to recover her bike and she is not alone. Deputies say only 5 of stolen bikes ever make it home. Thats why the Sheriffs Office is urging people to lock their bikes and register them with the county database. That way, a theft doesnt ride off with your bike and your plans. It was right at the kind of upswing of my training and then my bike got stolen and it takes a little of while to hunt down what youre going to ride down next and replace it so i had to cancel my race for last spring and i was disappointed. Kaepernick rested his arm. 49ers receiver torrey smith makes it seem like the competition between those two is neck and neck. I think it going well. Both guys competing very well. I think you see both of their strengths and weaknesses each and every day and they both can play, both can start and they both proven that so im glad im not the one getting paid the big bucks to make the decision. 49ers and texans sunday at 3 30 here on kpix 5 from levis stadium. The 49ers open the season against the new Los Angeles Rams at levis stadium next month. The rams are led by former cal and Marin Catholic quarterback jared goff. He was the top pick in the draft and is the focus of the hbo show hard knocks. So far its all about the education process. Even when the subject has nothing do with football. I happen to asked jared goff where the sun rises and where the sun sets and he said he wasnt sure. I swear to god. No. This [ censored ] guy doesnt know where the sun rises and where it sets. I know now. [ laughter ] thats west and thats east. So we talked about it. Technically, it doesnt rise. The earth just rotates. So you been wrong. Im from novato, too, let me just say its not a novato thing. Meanwhile, the raiders open their preseason schedule tomorrow against the cardinals in arizona. Quarterback derek carr says the biggest difference in this years Training Camp has been his comfort level. And thats a big reason why the raiders have such high expectations. Carrs also comfortable in his new uniform, too. No sleeves this year. Im going to tell you the honest truth. My wife saw a preseason picture of me last year and she said you have a horrible tan line right here from your jersey. And so thats why i rolled my sleeves up and didnt wear sleeves this year. Thats the only reason. Hey, sounds silly but im going to do what she says, man. Im going to make her happy. Last night in pittsburgh a guy in the white shirt here goes after the souvenir with his arms full of nachos. He doesnt get the ball. He loses his beer and gets cheese all over his face. Maybe some hot sauce and salsa, too, on there. Today the owner of the restaurant nacho daddy in las vegas is giving him a years worth of nachos. You need to bring a mitt to the yard to get your foul ball. That would be probably wise instead of trying to juggle nachos and beer. [ laughter ] didnt work out well.
