There was a standoff for about 4 hours in the Street Market and jones in a very busy area civic center. The police negotiated with the man, who had a gun who as you heard the chief say he wanted to be hurt by police. His family members have described him as someone with mental illness. They spent several hours talking to him. They used flashbang grenade and other nonlethal weapons. In the end the man was taken into custody not harmed. They put him on an ambulance and took him away a few minutes ago. The situation resolved here peacefully. In the meantime flames in a mansion in San Franciscos seacliff neighborhood today after a car crashed into the side of it. The driver died. It happened on 32nd avenue around 1 30 this afternoon. You could see the bright orange flames inside through the front window. Outside firefighters hosed down the engulfedover turned car. Firefighters kicked their way through the front door. They were able to knock out the fire quickly as neighbors watched from the sidewalk in disbelief. No word yet on what led up to this although it appears a pickup truck might have been hit before that crash. Police did manage to pull a shaggy haired dog to safety. No reports of any injuries. Police uncovered millions of dollars worth of Marijuana Plants during a drug sweep in san jose. Police raided 7 marijuana grow houses this morning. Two people arrested. They say the operation was controlled from a house on winstead court. Officers found nearly 2,000 plants worth about 4 million dollar. We believe that this is a larger operation. But again, this is going to require a lot more followup investigation as to who the owners were of these properties. If there was anybody else involved with those suspects, as well. So again, a very, very significant arrest, a very, very significant seizure. Police say the growers hijacked power and water from neighbors and pg e. The homes of all had sophisticated systems for growing plants and security. A neighborhood in shock after an earlymorning inferno in the east bay. The fire broke out around 2 45 this morning at an Apartment Building under construction on san pablo avenue in emeryville. It is right near the border with oakland. The sixalarm fire spread to nearby townhomes and an Auto Repair Shop which as you can see from chopper 5 and on the ground now looks like a total war zone. More than a dozen cars reduced to a mess of metal. The Business Owner tells us it is a total loss. New at 6 00, kpix 5s cate caugiran shows us the latest tool being used to help in the firefight. Cate. Reporter well, veronica, this is something the Alameda County Sheriffs Office and Fire Department had trained for using drones to help fight fires and today was the first time the drones and training were put to use. With a fire this big, it can take more than just ground crews to put it out. So the Alameda County Fire Department deployed its newest tool. We requested the drone to be able to fly above the fire and provide a thermal imaging update on where the hot spots were located. Reporter here are the images captured by one of the three drones used. The cameras have special heat sensors to let firefighters know the biggest problem areas. We were able to sense hot spots and able to verify that embers hadnt spread to other locations and also make sure that the firefighters were safe down on the scene. Reporter these images were live streamed to the fire command post for hours to help firefighters strategize where to deploy crews. This fire broke out just before 3 a. M. At a new apartment construction site. The flames spread to nearby homes in an Auto Repair Shop. I could see that so a total loss. Im very troubled by this. Reporter a womans activist group who organized the petition says they have collected 5,000 signatures, its not clear how many are scholars voters. Cordell our kpix 5 legal analyst says the petition sets a dangerous precedent. If you decide you want to get out of jury duty you just say, oh, i dont like this judge and that really will could get you out and that shakes up the whole jury system in a very bad way. Reporter she says a judges job to decide someones future is not easy and while she may not agree on his controversial sentence, the answer is not to strip him of his duties or to refuse your civic duty as a juror. You dont take one unpopular or controversial decision and decide that that judge can no longer serving. Reporter maria medina, kpix 5. Police caught a suspect after a place chase in hayward and fremont today. At one point the suspect rammed parked cars before taking off on foot. Police set up a perimeter in the area and took the suspect into custody. An emeryville man is guilty of seconddegree murder in a crash that killed a marine. The man was being chased in 2014 after a fastfood worker reported he was drunk. Yann ran a red lied and hit andrew silva light and hit andrew silva on a motorcycle. The Lance Corporal from union city had just came back from a tour in afghanistan. Yann had admit to downing several shots of whiskey before the crash. He was convicted of vehicular manslaughter. The group searched all weekend but leo was still missing. The companion is a member of the family and vital help with her condition. Contra costa Animal Services is on alert hoping to reunite this veteran with her service dog. Our officers looked to see if we identified the animal. We did not. Reporter he has a microchip and if found like all dogs he will be scanned. A coded number will identify him at once. Meanwhile they are searching shelters for leo. This is one of a growing number of products intended to help turn loved ones including pets into living memorials. Memorials that cost much less than traditional burials and keep loved ones closer. California law does regulate scattering and burying ashes on commercial property but it doesnt say anything about private property and a spokesman for the States Department of Consumer Affairs says planting your ashes in your backyard is kind of a gray area. The video is disturbing to say the least. Reporter the 37yearolds family and Community Leaders are calling it murder. Sterlings son broke down as the teens mother talked to reporters. One of the greatest fears is to see your child hurt and knowing theres nothing you can do about it. [screaming and crying ] reporter the Baton Rouge Police officer says his officers were responding to reports of a man selling cds outside a Convenience Store. That man had reportedly threatened someone with a gun. It is irrelevant. If you look at the video, it speaks for itself. Mr. Sterling was not reaching for a weapon. Reporter local authorities are now turning the investigation over to the fbi and u. S. Justice department. Theres a lot that we do not understand. And at this point, like you, i am demanding answers. Reporter the shooting has sparked protests across the city. The head of the baton rouge naacp wants the police chief fired. But today the police is not planning to leave. The two officers involved are now on administrative leave. Police say the body cameras that they were wearing became dislodged during the commotion there so there was a struggle. Reporter one of the dozens of groups heidi helps is extrafood. She is on the board of the nonprofit that collects fresh donated food from restaurants, Grocery Stores and farmers markets. There are 50,000 people here who worry about where their next meal is coming from. One in five people in marin county. Reporter one of the programs heidi started specifically for extrafood is called planned giving. Restaurants prepare food thats above and beyond whats on the menu that can then be donated. Every, single week, both of her restaurants make a wonderful dish for 20 people that we pick up and get to those in need. Reporter to places like warner creek Senior Housing to novato. So two meals a week which is great for residents to know its coming.
