Firefighters came out to help, but the driver refused and sped away. It was next spotted at the belmont safe way when the driver crashed into the front door and sped away again. By this time, patrol cars were in pursuit. The quick thinking of a sheriffs sergeant, he used his patrol car to push her off the roadway and on to the sidewalk. If it hadnt been for the quick thinking of the sergeant, he would have traveled the wrong way and would have caused an accident. Reporter the suspect identified as 54 year old Karen Teichmann of san carlos was still in the hospital late this afternoon. Charges against her are still pending. Police are investigating another crash that left a woman dead. Heres a look at the overturned car on 280. The driver was speeding when her car flipped over a grassy median and caught fire. Other drivers stopped to help pull the woman out of the car but she died at the scene. New at 6 00, a nanny under arrest suspected of hurting a 10 month old infant in her care. Danville Police Arrested mckayla rearo this afternoon after the parents said they saw her hit and shake the child on a nanny cam. The infant was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Reporter today a state Senate Subcommittee took up the issue of the deadly berkeley balcony collapse that claimed 6 young lives last june. Segway Construction Company had a history of questionable work and in previous years had paid out 26. 5 million in construction defect settlements. Reporter segway is accused of shoty construction that resulted in the balcons failure. But contractors are not required to report lawsuit settlements to the board that regulates them. A bill has been introduced that would force certain civil settlements to be reported to the contractors state license board. It would trigger an investigation into determining if that contractor is complying with requirements. Reporter lawsuits are not an accurate way to determine craftsmanship. Civil settlements are not necessarily a symptom of faulty work. They a symptom of leto my knowledgeious state. Reporter there are so many settlements, 50 to 100,000 a year, that relying that to fine substandard buildings would be like searching for a needle in a haystack. I dont see how they could reasonably investigate that. Julia goodrich on the two women who now have a unique bond. Most people dont find out who their heart or Lung Transplant even came from. They dont know anything about the donor. Reporter but 53 year old linda car knows. She received 51 year old tammy griffins heart. I think its amazing i can meet the person who has my heart. Reporter and tammy received the heart and lungs from a deceased donor. Tammy had cystic fibrosis. Her heart was functioning well, but was pushed out of its original position. A heart and Lung Transplant was the only option. I asked them if my heart was still good. They said yeah, i said why dont i just donate it. Reporter her health was declining. She couldnt walk her dog anymore. Two women who had never met wound up on the same hospital floor at stanford. Altogether, theres probably about 30 people involved in these two transplant operations. Reporter dr. Joseph woo coordinated the Surgical Teams. One Surgical Team removed the heart and lungs from the deceased donor. A second team implanted them in tammy. A third team implanted tammys heart in linda. A touch and go surgery where both women arent sure of the outcome until it was complete. This operation is extraordinarily rare. The last one done here at stanford was done 22 years ago. Reporter tammy and linda wanted to meet. Two months after their life saving transplants, they met and tammy got to hear her heart beating in linda. Both women say their health is improving daily. They both wear masks outdoors while their bodies heal and get stronger. I love to be able to jog or Mountain Bike or run again. Its just a miracle. I cant believe this actually happened.
