This happened this afternoon. Those cars cost about 2 million each. Bart says at this point, its a good thing it happened when it did. They said if something were to happen to this car, they wanted it to happen before people got on. Now, the plan is to put these cars into service sometime around december. New at 6 00 a rash of mail thefts is causing headaches for hundreds of people in one part of the bay area. They are now forced to go to the post office and wait in long lines to pick up their mail. This is after a series of mailbox thefts in vallejo and American Canyon. Emily turner outside a post office in vallejo and you spoke with some of these frustrated folks. Reporter yeah. And there are several different ways that these crooks are getting into the mailboxes but the important thing that the post office wants you to know is that they are investigating it. They know whats going on. And they are trying to find the solution. They are lined up like black friday at the post office. But instead of mailing packages, they are here to pick them up. A recent rash of mailbox thefts has compromised more than 300 peoples deliveries. Until the burglaries can finally be solved. Its a shame that its come to this where we cant collect our important information. Reporter the the post office in there have been reported and unreported thefts. They are cracking open cluster boxes, using a key on others. Once inside they have your mail and all the information that comes with it. They get in my bank accounts, you know, and my visa accounts and everything. Steal my money. Reporter mail theft is a federal crime. And the post offices Law Enforcement arm has launched investigations. Until this case is solved these folks mail will be kept here and safe. Something needs to be done. I dont know, they have to do something. Reporter so this is a federal crime. It means its punishable by up to five years in federal prison and 250,000 fine. Its not some small minor issue. Not only is it a major crime, its a major inconvenience for people. So hopefully these investigative arms of the post office will be figure out whats going on. Emily, you mentioned breaking into the boxes. You mentioned a key. But a couple of postal workers had their master keys stolen so do they think that ties into it as well . Reporter that is a possibility. It makes it an even bigger deal. I was talking to the investigators just before we went on air. If those master keys are in possession of one of the crooks or they have made a copy thats illegal, thats an Additional Charge and years in prison. Theres a 10,000 reward that the post office is offering hoping that anyone will come forward with information for the arrest and conviction of the people behind it. So very clearly, a big deal. Absolutely. Emily turner, thanks. San mateo police need your help finding this suspected burglar caught on home surveillance last night. You see the man scoping out the house on eaton road before he tries to open the door. Police say he managed to get inside then steal jewelry before the homeowner was able to chase him away. Officers working to see if this burglary is related to a couple of breakins that happened nearby on hobart avenue. New at 6 00, bay area children lost to violence. Tonight families have a place to go to remember them. Kpix 5s jackie ward is in oakland where a memorial statue is unveiled. Reporter its a Memorial Service thats taken place every year for the last 22 years. On the statue behind me there are more than 400 names each one of them died as a victim of violence. [ bagpipes ] reporter a little while ago the people who knew these children came here and were led through a ceremony by mayor libby schaaf. When this annual Service First began one tree was planted for each child who had been killed that year. But the grove grew to more than 200 trees. So the childrens Memorial Committee decided to create a centralized fixture that people could find comfort in. Its going to raise the consciousness of our community that, you know, this violence has to cease. It has to stop. You know, this senselessness doesnt make any sense whatsoever. Reporter this statue is the same as one in hayward since 2014. A former Alameda County supervisor has been spearheading the efforts to put up a statue in oakland but had trouble getting leaders to accept plans for it until mayor libby schaaf took office. The children represent real victims of violence. There was a 14yearold girl from Castro Valley and two boys from oakland ages 3 and 17. In oakland, jackie ward, kpix 5. Mayor libby schaaf chose Lakeside Park as the statues location because a lot of families are there every day. New video of a highflying coast guard rescue near the dumbarton bridge. Crews got the call around 7 p. M. Yesterday. The boater was injured. They tried to get him to crawl into the basket up to safety but he said he wanted to stay aboard until high tide. They lowered him food, blankets and a radio and monitored him until he was able to get back to shore this morning. Well, steady at times even intense rain in the bay area made for difficult driving conditions including highway 1 between pacifica and daly city. The road was wet and it was tough to see out the windshield there. To the south substantial rain fell in san jose. Some cyclists wore hoods and kept riding through the downpour but the rain caused complications for crews that needed to work outside. And streets were wet all around San Francisco, as well. Road crews say it will take another day to fix a massive sinkhole in San Franciscos Pacific Heights neighborhood. It opened up yesterday on sacramento street between lion and baker. You can actually track the status of this flight on radar flight 24. Com. You can see it is more than halfway through its journey but it traveled a lot slower, about 90 miles an hour at last check, flying at 27,000 feet. And thats why it is taking 2. 5 days to get to the bay area. The Solar Impulse 2 more than halfway into its historic journey over the pacific ocean. This is the future for the world. Lets do it. Reporter the pilots are attempting to fly the solar powered plane around the world. They started last year in abu dhabi and on thursday they took off from hawaii to Mountain View on their ninth leg of the world tour. If it flies around the world thats good but imagine much more than that. Reporter their goal to fly a plane using clean technology. The Solar Impulse 2 is equipped with 17,000 solar cells that powers its propellers and charges its batteries. It basically can run forever. Would you ever trust a plane thats powered by the sun . Well, i assume that youre much closer to the sun in an airplane than you are below cloud cover. Reporter the pilot seems to be relaxed smiling talking. I believe so honestly the way things progress nowadays. It was a flight of four hours 24 minutes so the fact that its taking 2. 5 days you can tell just how slow this plane is going. It is set to arrive here tomorrow night at 9 a. M. For now live at Moffett Field maria medina, kpix 5. Last summers deadly balcony collapse in berkeley is the focus of an upcoming hearing at the state capital. A Senate Committee will meet monday to discuss what has been done to tighten oversight of contractors with a history of construction defects settlements. In the berkeley case investigators determined water got trapped inside the wood during construction of the balcony leading to dry rot. The collapse killed six people and injured serve others. Cell phone video captures another fire in San Franciscos Mission district. The second in two days. Two firefighters were injured and about a dozen tenants were displaced from this fourstory building on san jose avenue. Todays fire was less than a mile from this one, which happened yesterday at 17th street near guerrero. Investigators believe it started in between two buildings. No one was hurt. Other bay area headlines. Alameda police now say that the man originally arrested in a gas station shooting isnt their guy. They arrested him based on witness accounts but they later ruled him out. Two employees were wounded saturday night at the arco on park street. A different man suspected in a road rage incident is now under arrest for the gas station shooting. Convicted felon don perdue is being held on bail in santa clara on suspicion of having a pipe bomb. He was arrested after being pulled over for driving with an expired plate and littering. Police called in the bomb squad when they found a pipe with wires sticking out of it in his backpack. Purdue is also suspected of being under the influence of a controlled substance and carrying a stun gun. The woman suspected of fleeing police and crashing her car into an embankment in Mountain View has been arrested. 5yearold Tiffany Smith was stopped early yesterday morning for reckless driving. She sped away drove into a fence and flipped the car. She is in the hospital with moderate injuries. Once the 25yearold is released she will go to jail. I think were better but were not exactly where we need to be and we always have to be persistent in advancing the cause of freedom. Reporter the black Panther Party was founded on october 15, 1966 in oakland. Declaring october 2016 as black Panther Party history month. In fact, the Oakland Museum of california will host a large exhibition showcasing photos, audio recordings and artifacts. The fbi at one point declared the black panthers a violent and dangerous group. Were angry black men and wanted to take over america which was not true. Only bart workers were aboard and it was going slowly but bart says they dont know if it was operator or mechanical error. Hundreds of people in vallejo and American Canyon are forced to pick up their mail from the post office because of dozens of mailbox thefts. Investigators are looking into whether the thieves are using master keys stolen from two postal workers this year. And the autopsy to determine how prince died is done. The sheriff says the results will take weeks. He revealed little else but rejected some theories. There were no obvious signs of trauma on the body at all. The sheriff also said suicide is not suspected but he would not comment on whether drugs were found in the house. Prince had a deep connection to the bay area through oakland native sheila e. She said they shared more than a love of music. They shared a deep relationship that nearly came to marriage. [ music ] reporter rare video of an earlier appearance by prince and sheila e. It was the start of a decades long collaboration. The couple met in 1978. Sheila e bornsheila e came from a musical family. Her father played percussion in santana. In the 80s she joined the band as a drummer. We became friends. He had been following my career am we liked a lot of the same things. And we were able to, you know, sit in a room or at the studio and record for hours on end even days at a time and, um, just have fun. Reporter the couples collaboration continued for decades even after she became a breakout artist on her own. The song the glamorous life was written by prince in 1984. Bay area friends and family sensed the couple shared more than just music when she moved to minnesota to be closer to princes recording complex. She revealed in her memoir the beat of my own drum that they were engaged. I was playing purple rain one of my favorite songs and a lot of times it would make me cry and, um, we were so into it that, you know, sometimes i we would open our eyes and forget that we were in front of 20,000, 30,000 people. And at that particular time as i opened my eyes, i looked at him at the same time he look at me and he asked me to marry him at that exact moment. Reporter the marriage never happened. But on stage and off, they shared a closeness. Went to the movies, you know, we played loved sports so we always played, you know, basketball, ping pong, pool. We did a lot of things that, you know, people do, and whatever normal might be. Reporter the Musical Partnership came full circle when sheila e appeared with prince in oakland in 2011. He was incredible person. Very talented. And as everyone has said, so far he was a genius. There are reports that an Emergency Landing of princes plane in recent weeks was due to a drug overdose. Asked about that today, sheila e. Said she never saw any evidence of drug abuse. She said he suffered the same physical issues many musicians experience including hip and knee problems from jumping off speakers in heels. Well, as we wait to find out for sure what killed prince, speculation is sure to focus on drugs. There are reports that the singer had been taking the highly addictive painkiller percocet. Regardless of what the autopsy reveals doctors say even talking about the issue could save lives. The drug gives the relief promised when it comes to pain relief but it comes with this incredibly dangerous price. Because of the explosion of Prescription Drug overdoses, Governor Brown made it easier to get the socalled opiate antidote without a prescription. Health Officials Say a second person has tested positive for the zika virus in San Francisco. But they say there is no risk to public health. The latest case is a pregnant woman who recently traveled to central america. She does not have zika symptoms. This is one of at least 11 confirms cases of zika in the bay area all of them travel related. Eight people are dead including two children in what police are calling execution style killings. Officers discovered the horrifying scene inside this pike county ohio home. Police say all of the victims were family members. Throw children including a newborn baby, a sixmonthold and a threeyearold survived the shootings. Three children survived. Police say the killer or killers are still on the loose. For earth day Governor Brown is in new york at the United Nations as more than 150 countries sign an agreement on climate change. The deal calls for reducing greenhouse gases. It is expected to set a record for international diplomacy. Secretary of state john kerry signed the deal for the United States and actor Leonardo Dicaprio was there urging World Leaders to sign. Countries who do want to participate have a year to sign the agreement. But most of them signed today. One of britains youngest royals had good reason to stay up past his bedtime. Christopher pulu would lead the family meeting where everybody would discuss their progress. The family had a series of traumas. A sister paralyzed in a car accident died. Then their father died of a heart attack on his way to the doctors. Sosia was only nine. If i was there i felt like i would have been able to help him out in some way. Reporter there was never much money but now his mother worked even longer hours to support seven children with no welfare. One month western suburb over the water bill then the next will have to cover the water bill and push over the guy for electric bill. He started thinking maybe i could eat less and then there will be more food and this is the type of kid he is. Reporter in ninth grade, that pain turned to anger. I was angry about my circumstances. You just have to bend it back. Reporter fast forward to the bikery where sosia works a nonprofit that repairs an recycles bikes. This was one of the experiences that helped him get back on track. A college Prep Tutoring Program for low income kids called upward bound was also crucial. I decided to become a life long learner. It was just a blossoming of sosia. He turned it around in his classes, his grades an entire 180. Reporter whats important, he says, are relationships an giving back. On the kpix 5 highdef Doppler Radar a few showers lingering right now over the Santa Cruz Mountains and also right there over the diablo range and parts of the hayward fault south of moraga and right over danville. A few showers moving into the 680 corridor and heres how it looks in the Santa Cruz Mountains southwest of san jose. Some showers there that might make it into the south bay but by the time they get over there some of the moisture is all squeezed out. We shall see.
