A device is more complicated to get into than just simply listening over a wire. Reporter this Technology Analyst says the complications start with the thousands of possible combinations for the four digit code to open the phone. With enough brute force and enough to super Computing Power they probably could do it. But whether they could do it on a given phone in time to actually have useful information is very doubtful. Reporter but heres the real problem. If you dont crack the phone within, say, 10 tries, the phone reacts by wiping itself clean. Thats what the bureau doesnt want to do. They are trying to preserve the evidence. Its very possible that they are working on how to break that encrypted device but it makes more sense, if you know somebody that has the key to a lock to ask them for the key to the lock rather than working on try to make a new key that may or may not fit. Apple said it doesnt have the key. They say that they dont have it and they dont want to create it. The worry is that that software could get into the wrong hands. First of all, it could be misused by government. And second of all it could get into the hands of others who might use it for criminal purposes and apple has a lot riding on saying that we have secure phones. Not only to its customers in the u. S. But all around the world. Reporter how vital is this information, do you think, to the investigation . Well, its unknown. Right now we havent been able to determine, you know, what was the cause for this person to go on this shooting rampage for him and his wife. They would like to try to figure out, were others involved . Really interesting. Really is. We could go a lot of different ways with this thing. What do you think is the next step . I think the court battle between apple and then the u. S. Government that goes all the way to the Supreme Court because apple is going to want to be told what to do in this case. Thats up to the San FranciscoDistrict Attorney and he isnt saying but a Law Enforcement source says the case has gotten complicated recently and may be delaying that decision. Reporter for more than 100 years sailors making their way to the safety of San Francisco bay have breathed a sigh of relief when they spotted the familiar glow of the point benita lighthouse. But not long ago, everything went dark. A couple of months ago the transformer for point benita lighthouse failed. And interrupted Power Service to all the equipment that we have out there. Reporter power was out not only to the beacon but also to radar and automated ship tracking systems. A backup generator kicked in but then failed, as well. The coast guard had to run a power unit to keep everything running. What many visitors consider a fun tourist attraction, the coast guard sees as vital to navigation. Critically important to making sure that we dont have ships running aground, ships running into each other. Reporter the generator has been fixed but it doesnt have enough power to light the old beacon. So a less intense solar charged light has been temporarily installed. It doesnt reach as far out to sea. But in an age of modern gps navigation, does it matter . Are ships still relying on a lighthouse to let them know where they are . Not so much but electrons can fail so we still have to provide services for those vessels that dont have electronic capabilities. The suspect has been part of the family for quite a while. Reporter some richmond Police Officers came out to support the victim and the victims daughter who was in court. A 12yearold boy was riding his bike by the school, was struck by a car and dragged about 50 feet right outside the School Parking lot. Jump out of the car and move to the back and i saw the kid underneath there. Its an accident, not intentional. That boy had a broken arm and is expected to be okay. Investigators returned to the scene of a shooting in berkeley that sent three teens to the hospital, three boys 16, 18 and 19 were shot last night in the 1100 block of parker street. All three remain in the hospital this evening. Police believe the three were targeted. So far no arrests. Two los angeles Police Officers are being charged with raping women while on duty. Prosecutors say the assaults happened between 2008 and 2011. They say the victims had been arrested by the officers for drugrelated crimes. The l. A.
