I thought this doesnt make sense. Everybody is all about local food but what about the flowers that are on their tables . Reporter christina founded farm girl flowers five years ago from a russian hill apartment. Today the Online FlowerDelivery Service ships across the country has more than 40 fulltime employees and makes 300 bouquets a day. She did it by ignoring what everyone else was doing. The florist doesnt know what flowers youre going to buy so they have to buy all these different varieties and then they throw out about half of them. Reporter so she takes choice out of it and guarantees a result instead. You get whatever bouquet they are making that day with whatever flowers farms have in season. You just pick the size. That way the number of blooms bought matches the bouquets made. Industry standard is 40 of what florists order ends up not used at all. But because of the way that farm girl flowers has created their business model, they have less than 1 of waste. Another trend they are bucking imports. 80 of flowers sold in the u. S. The way i learned it was kind of interesting because like a lot of people i felt like i had been a victim in the San Franciscos war on the car or the rumored war on the car so i brought my complaint to mayor ed lee and i got to tell ya, i was taken aback by his answer. Lets watch. Trouble getting around town. Finding parking. Paying parking tickets that are astronomical tow fees of 500. Every time people turn around they feel like they are getting slammed. Well, we have a very strong policy in the city when it comes to cars, phil. Now that. That we would like to you know that. That we would like to have people think about 50 of their trips not going alone in their cars. I want more people to think about alternative ways to get to work especially when they are driving in their cars by themselves all around the city. Reporter some people would say thats a war on cars. No. I dont think its a war on cars. Its a great policy for our climate and environment. Reporter lee is also taking a serious look at the idea of tearing down interstate 280 as it enters San Francisco and building an underground tunnel for the nearby caltrain tracks all to make way for even more development. Its not just taking it down, phil. We have to figure out what to do with a train railyard in the center of where all of the development of the city is. Thats not the right place to have a railyard. So we are thinking this through. Reporter is there such a thing as too Much Development too much growth . Every time we look around every parking lot is turning into a highrise. No. Were not permitting them to do that. Reporter we can drive right down there right now and they are lined up there.
