Five delta islands are ground zero of californias water wars and folks like melvin love, who lives there, are worry. That tree line over there is saltwater and you suck more freshwater out, the saltwater is coming this way. Reporter the metropolitan Water District in Southern California is moving forward with the plans that would buy five islands in the sacramento, san joaquin delta. The company has said it plans to use them for rest store raive environmental work but why would a Southern CaliforniaWater Company care about a few islands of farmland almost 400 miles way . The islands which they are interested in purchasing are in the direct path for the delta tunnels project. They are moving ahead to purchase those islands which could become a staging area for the project even before state and federal perfect hitting has been completed even before state and federal permitting has been completed. Reporter if passed that would send thousands of gallons of Sacramento River water to Southern California taps but five local counties already depend on the delta for drinking water. The people who live here and preservationists worry pumping more out will destroy the habitat. Its an estuary for many endangered fish a stopover for migrating burns and for melvin love a future for his family. Going to be a granddad not too long ago and, um, i want to be able to have my grandson on freshwater where he can jump in the water and he can actually open his eyes and, um, see what we have here. The money will be spent to help landlords renovated homes and apartments in exchange for housing vets. So people who we house today dont become homeless again tomorrow. Reporter the program would provide permanent housing for vets who can get housing vouchers but cant use them because of no vacancies. It would help a whole lot to wake that person up, you know, from being like, um, unwanted or alone in life, you know, feel more, you know, comfortable with himself if he dont have anything else to be housed it would be a great thing. Reporter homeless advocates applaud what the city is doing as a longrange solution but they say the problem is more immediate especially on cold nights like tonight. They say that nothing is being done by the city to put people in shelters right now. Reporting live in san jose, len ramirez, kpix 5. We continue to follow breaking news tonight. Its telling people that the arts dont matter when the arts are integral to a liberal arts education. Reporter the graduate student in the Dance Program is in one of the programs facing cuts. Supporters started an online petition and have already gathered more than 4,000 signatures in an effort to save what they claim is the oldest continuously running Dance Program in the country. The interim provost says it makes sense academically and financially to focus on the programs most popular with students. Where is our enrollment in terms of some of these programs . Certainly our students are informing us in terms of the majors and programs we are interested in because those are the ones they enroll in. Reporter in addition to dance, many of the colleges language programs like french and spanish as well as american and africanamerican studies are also potentially on the chopping block much to the disappointment of students. I was surprised base as a liberal arts school i cant see them deciding to cut such big artistic programs like dance like language because that is part of the reason i applied here. Reporter administrators say its necessary to save the school but students feel they are losing their identity in the process. The college in no way is trying to say that we are not committed to still being a liberal arts institution. Youre telling people that arts dont matter. Its really heartbreaking. It really is. Police shot and killed an armed man at a construction site near st. Lukes hospital in San Francisco. He was first spotted around 4 00 this afternoon on an upper floor of a new medical building the hospital is constructing near its campus in the mission. Our joe vazquez just heard from the police chief on what happened. What did the chief have to say . Reporter ken, were on the southwest side of st. Lukes hospital and right back there its a little hard to see its dark now but those bright lights back there, that is the crime scene right now. You know what, the chief said is that around 4 15 this afternoon a man arrived here at this construction site on the site of the hospital with two firearms, not one but two, and when the police got here, chief greg suhr says the officers heard gunshots. Responding officers obviously rushed to the scene and could hear shots fired as they arrived. Upon arriving they exited their vehicles, looked up and atop the construction elevator was a suspect in it appeared to be white coveralls holding a rifle. The rifle is directed at the hospital. Officers directed their firearms at the suspect who then lowered the rifle pointing it town did he bow. Three officers fired neutralizing the suspect. The suspect is dead. Reporter the suspect we understand was on the top of an elevator. Its still not clear how he got up there. Police say he may have climbed up some stairs at the site and ended up on top of the elevator, where he died. Theres more to this story. The San Bruno Police department called sfpd and said, hey, we think its the same guy who was in here earlier today, a man in a white jumpsuit apparently went in and stole some firearms from a big 5 store in san bruno. And police say they have verified that that robbery suspect is the very same man who mysteriously arrived here with two firearms and started firing them apparently because police said they heard gunshots and you heard the chief say that those weapons were directed towards the hospital. Of course, that caused some major concern here as, you know, how it works they call it an active shooter situation. Everybody runs in and tries to neutralize a suspect. Joe, i know the investigation is just getting under way, but do we have any kind of motive why this guy did this . Reporter its not clear. There does not appear to be a confrontation at the construction site. So why a guy with show up with two weapons start firing toward a hospital is just a giant mystery right now. I will tell you, hospital administrators came out. They didnt say much but they said that right now, that the folks inside, everything is fine. We talked to one doctor who said surgeries are continuing, that its all going on as it would without this incident. And they are starting to open up the streets right now. It could have been much worse, ken, if this guy had been able to connect with his weapons. So joe, at this hour, the hospital is no longer on lockdown and police are opening up the roads in that area . Reporter police are opening up the roads right now. And we understand that the ebb and flow inside the entrances is back to normal. We have not been given the official word yet from the hospital, though. All right. If he cant go, ex49er shaun hill would start for minnesota. The 2015 decline of the 49ers is remarkably similar to the fall of 2003 following years of poor drafts, players let go and john york firing coach Steve Mariucci over the phone. Jeff garcia knows what the 49ers are going through right now. He was part of that team that went to the second round of the playoffs in 2002 and then made a flurry of moves that started a string of 7 straight seasons without a winning record and eventually hit rock bottom when garcia was let go. It wasnt planned for the 49ers. Do you regret the way you left the 49ers . It was unfortunate.
