They should also talk to my wife. I think that that would help enlighten people. Im already voting for you. Im sick of the crap. Reporter hennessey is a 30 year veteran of the department and has backing of mayor ed lee. I was very concerned with what i saw the last few years, a disintegration of trust of the people of San Francisco and the sheriffs department. Were doing exactly what we should be doing. Were following, adhering to the laws. Reporter nonetheless 39 of voters surveyed cited his 2012 Domestic Violence arrest as why they wont vote for him. 31 cited mirkarimis support for the city sanctuary ordinance. I see how the mayor distanced himself from the very law he signed into effect in 2013. Its called due process for all. Reporter an ordinance critics say led to the shooting death of kate steinle on a crowded San Francisco pier by Juan FranciscoLopez Sanchez who was in this country illegally. Every, a policy ironically that mirkarimis opponent even largely endorses. I do support the city sanctuary policy, but i do think the two policies leave some room for interpretation. Reporter would you have sent sanchez back . I would have made a notification. Thats one of those ambivalent answers you get thats basically im not commenting on that right now and thats interesting because a lot of this appears to be ross personality and people are just against him. We were looking at that poll and there was a whole slew of issues as to why people werent voting for him, but would you say the nail in the coffin was really the whole sanctuary city issue . That seemed to be putting it over the edge, but from the get go theres an old saying you can only make your First Impression one time and ross got off to the bad start from the minute with the Domestic Violence arrest involving his wife, although some people thought it was overblown. Its just been downhill ever since. Its going to be interesting because San Francisco is also a very liberal and progressive city. I suspect that 20 thats supporting him could turn out in the polls in bigger numbers than the people against him because they really believe it and in San Francisco its who shows up to vote that counts. Well have to stay tuned for that. Thanks. Brittany talked to the governor three days before she died. Eyelid like to think that conversation may have played a id like to think that conversation may have played a role in the governor deciding this is indeed the right thing. Reporter today governor jerry brown said this after signing the assisted suicide bill into law. I do not know what i would do if i were dying and in prolonged and excruciating pain. I am certain, however, that it would be a comfort to be able to consider the options afforded by this bill. I would like to see all americans have access to the same healthcare rights. Reporter brittany and her husband moved from california to oregon where the death with dignity act exists. She made this video days before taking a lethal dose of drugs given by her doctor. My goals really are quite simple. Reporter under the law which takes effect january 1st californians with a diagnosis of six months or less to live must make oral and written requests to a doctor for the assisted suicide drug, then make another request with the same doctor no less than 15 days later. Lastly, a second doctor must sign off the patient as mentally stable. On november 1st of last year brittany took the aid in dying medication and within five minutes she fell asleep. Within 30 minutes her breathing slowed to the point where she passed away. Reporter dan says his wife would have been happy about the governors decision to help thousands of terminally ill patients in california. The reason that my wifes name became known or now that i continue this is because my wife died. And there are a number of other bills awaiting governor browns signature. Three of them have to do with protecting foster kids from being overprescribed potent medications. Others include legislation that would automatically register to vote californians who obtain new drivers licenses, prohibit steps or counties from banning artificial lawns and drought tolerant landscaping and suspend the High School Exit exam the next three years. Nat gate Cheryl Thrasher they successfully dont put your outgoing mail in a mailbox at night ever. You know, they see a flag up, its gone. Reporter that was a warning we got from not one but two convicted id thieves we interviewed behind bars back in 2011. Ed out every other week to millions of californians. Wn o the agency . Sheryl thrasher and Tiffany Andres say they successfully emptied bank accounts, opened credit cards and committed crimes in their victims names and all they needed was one piece of mail containing a Social Security number. Its easy. Its fast. Reporter thats the reason most government agencies, banks, even universities stopped using Social Security numbers as identifiers years ago. In fact, in 2010 california passed a low prohibiting printing the number on my materials that are mailed, but as we first reported in july viewers like maxine heinz were horrified to discover the state still printing full Social Security numbers on documents mailed out every other week to millions of californians. When she complained to the agency . She kind of laughed a bit and said yeah, a lot of people complain. Reporter employees asked for standard language to respond to those complaints following our initial report and viewers began contacting us to say theyd received other peoples edd documents with full Social Security numbers in the mail. How in the world does a piece of paper get into an envelope addressed to me . Reporter the agencys response when we asked why it was still printing full Social Security numbers . It is not administratively feasible to print only the last four digits. The federal Social Security act requires it to use Social Security numbers in the administration of its programs, implying it was therefore exempt from state laws, though the Social Security administration tells us there is no law requiring they print the number on mailed documents. Not only is the edd in violation of existing california law, but i think theyve violated the common sense test. Reporter after seeing our reports, family members mike gotto and Katherine Baker demanded the agency make changes and in record time it is. Turns out it is administratively feasible to print only the last four digits and beginning this month thats all that will be printed on these forms sent out every two weeks to millions of people. By the end of the year the agency expects to do the same on 75 of all its mailed documents. Now we also discovered that only three of the 15 largest states in the nation say they redact the full number on all mailed unemployment documents. Like california most of those other states claim federal law requires they print it, though the Social SecurityAdministration Says there is no law that or prohibits it. Now we talked to senator feinstein who tells us she is looking into whether federal legislation is needed to officially prohibit printing these numbers on mailed documents. Its the common sense law, come on. Throughout our reporting thats what the ftc said and what lawmakers across the country have been saying, yet these agencies continue to defend their use of this number on mailed documents.
