Just now roger bevers was able to make it back to his home. Hes surprised its still standing, not a scorch mark on it, even though so many hundreds of his neighbors will eventually arrive home to nothing. Once they come back in here, its going to be very overwhelming. If id have came back and my house would have been like over here, it would be heartbreaking. Just unbelievable, heartbreaking. It is going to be heartbreaking because theres very little left of many of these homes. Theyre still tallying the damage. I can tell you this. This is the fifth major fire in this county in just the last couple of months but this one is by far the worst as it hit this populated area and several other areas as we noted and theyre still trying to get in to some areas to count the damage and possibly more people. Theyve not been able to get to every home to check on people. A lot of people thought maybe they were done for the fire season but obviously nowhere close. No, fire season has a couple months left in it and the conditions are just awful, although i will say its cooled down a little bit today. The humidity dropped, not as much wind. A lot of fingers crossed out here. Joe vazquez, thanks so much. Lets get a look at the fire burn area. This is the latest map from cal fire. The areas in red are the active fire zones. Theyre talking about maybe opening up some of the roadways tomorrow so some of the folks can go back and look at their homes, maybe attend to pets they had to leave behind. Theres no house s for people to rent because theyre all gone. Reporter don believes close to half of the homes in his neighborhood are gone but he will stay and today hell be back on the fire lines to continue fighting. This is where i am. This is what i do. This is what i love. This is my community. You just have to. Theres no other word for it. You have to keep going. Reporter don said unfortunately his daughters family lost everything so he and his wife really do consider themselves lucky because when you look around here, theres no other word to describe it. They can work as many as 30 hours straight before getting a break. Heres where they can get meals, showers, and beds to sleep in. The valley fire is one of eight major wildfires burning tonight in california. Nearly 400,000 acres have scorched. Governor brown said explosive fire seasons like this is the new way of life. We need our shortterm, which is to deal with the forests with preventative fires. Its to build up fire personnel and the equipment thats needed and be ready to pull in resources from all over. Reporter new at 6 00, phil matier is inside the office of Emergency Services with a look at how the state is coordinating these firefighting efforts. Thats right. This is basically the states 911 center. This is where the emergency calls come in. This is where they monitor everything from fires to floods to earthquake and this is the directors assessment earlier today of where we stand. This is like a battle. Hot dry winds but now were getting a break in the weather. Were hoping to get aircraft out there and fly and make a difference. Reporter the big board over the center spells out the challenge. Eight fires statewide. 10,000 firefighters. Over 385,000 ache acres burned. And it could go on for another week. Weve got some tired firefighters out there. Some have been out on the line for 30 days between the rocky fire and now the valley fire. If we break another fire or have another situation, because we have other disasters in the state, its really going to be something. Have you ever seen a fire season like this before . Its been unprecedented the explosive growth. Four years of drought, bark beetle tree kill. When you get a fire it just explodes. We have an order in for Additional Fire engines to come from neighboring states and all over the nation. Weve had to move some resources to the fires in lake county. We look at our priority as life, property, and Environmental Protection in that order. Reporter its not just the fire. Theres damage to roads, but really where we have a big impact is on water, delivery and distribution, and power. Even if they got the power going back on, theres no homes to have the power, receive the power. Reporter and of course the victims. Our big focus is not only just the fire fight to put the fire out but weve got about 15,000 people who have been displaced. Weve pretty much taken everything we can out of the system. So youre at max. We are at max, correct. Every one is crossing their fingers in the hopes nothing else hits the state. No Hazardous Material eruption. No earthquake. Nothing that could really send us in to a spin. In the command center, phil matier, kpix 5. Our chief meteorologist paul deanno with us now and more on how the weather is affecting those firefighting efforts. Certainly a change over the past 48 hours. The wind dragging in some moist air from the pacific ocean, but that wind will remain gusty surrounding the fire over the next 24 hours all the way through thursday. We need a soaking rainfall. We need a nice drenching rain which i do not see happening. What i do see happening for the next couple days, some rain showers will be around that will mute the fire danger, albeit moderately. Cooler temperatures certainly mean higher relative humidity. That will continue for the next couple of days. There are a few showers on high def doppler and those showers are primarily focused in napa and lake county. A little bit of help but any help is good news. We continue to follow the latest on the valley fire burning right now unlake county. Coming up, a live update from the fire zone. ,,,,,,,,, our top story tonight, the valley fire remains out of control burning 61,000 acres so far. We learned late this afternoon a disabled woman died when that fire erupted saturday night and swept through her home. Thousands of homes are threatened by these flames. 13,000 people have been ordered to evacuate. Kpix 5s joe vazquez is in middletown where there is devastation everywhere. It is. Its just everywhere block by block. Just to give you an idea of what were seeing, this is the sort of disaster aftermath we see in an f5 tornado for example. Almost everything level to the ground. This, we believe, is a garage. Theres almost nothing recognizable. That might be the dryer over there. As we drive through these communities these are what were seeing. What were also seeing is the fire itself. Its still raging out of control. We saw fire crews today digging fire lines. Theyre also attacking the flames by air as the air has cleared up today. They were not able to fly yesterday. These flames quickly descended upon the community on saturday afternoon. As we talked to people, they say in some cases they saw what appeared to be a 50foot wall of flames just screaming down the hillside. We were watching it. It was coming off the hill back here. As they kept coming and kept coming, i got everything loaded, got my horses loaded up, and i told my wife, i said i think its time to go. He went and he got back today and found his home is intact, not the case with many of his neighbors, hundreds and hundreds of homes owned by his neighbors. In fact it was the case that we went up to anderson springs, an area west of town, west of highway 29. Thats where the one fire fatality lived. She was disabled. She is elderly. She could not get out on her own. In the mad scramble on saturday when people were calling the authorities trying to get their loved ones out, they couldnt get in to that rather remote area, as she died in her home. Back to you. Joe vazquez with an update on the lake county valley fire. Everything you see here in red on this map, that is the area thats burned so far. 61,000 acres. Nearly 100 square miles. One spot you saw was Hidden Valley lake. Reporter nick janes made it there today and said many homes have been destroyed. This is a perfect example of the kind of damage were seeing in Hidden Valley lake. We were driving on this road. Everything looks fine till you get to this spot here. Youll see the valley fire ripped through three homes right in a row. One after another after another. The damage here absolutely immense as these three homes burned right to the ground. We dont know if it was a wind swept ember that got to this part. This is exactly what were seeing. Some streets completely untouched. Others were one home burned. The valley fire made its way through this community with no rhyme or reason. Weve seen probably at least 10 structures burned to the ground if not more than that as weve gone from street to street assessing the damage. In Hidden Valley lake, nick janes, kpix 5. Another place hit hard, the resort at harbin hot springs. The fire has turned the popular retreat in to rubble.
