There was more violence at that same spot this morning. Two local news crews were robbed of their gear while reporting at the scene. One cameraman was pistol whipped. No one else was hurt. Police just released this image of one of the three suspects along with the gun that was used in the attack. The suspects drove off in a black bmw with no plates. San Francisco Police now saying alcohol might have been a factor in a motorcycle accident at market and third. Three people were hit. One has lifethreatening injuries. The other is expected to survive. The motorcyclist had injuries and had surgery today. No avests have been made. A key ruling today in the case of a deadly balcony collapse in berkeley. A judge said the company that built the apartments cannot sit in on parts of the investigation. The Alameda County d. A. Has launched a criminal probe and segue construction wanted to be present during tests on the balcony. We certainly will give other parties an opportunity to observe such evidence. We do that all the time. But at this critical point in investigating, they wanted to participate in the investigation. That is to be done by those that have the authority in the district attorneys office. The fourth story balcony collapsed last month 6 people including five Irish Exchange students. Seven others were seriously injured. With a day to go before the 4th, Oakland Police uncover a massive cache of illegal fireworks. Kpix 5s da lin says it was such a large bust, they had to call in a second truck to haul that stuff away. Reporter it looks like moving day at the east oakland home. Police and the bomb squad teamed up to take out the fireworks one box at a time. There were so many boxes they wouldnt all fit in this one truck. Two men inside were arrested. Where did you get those fireworks . [ censored ] this is the largest confiscation that we have seen doing this. Reporter investigators say all of these are illegal fireworks and an officer said the fireworks in this box are called hydrogen bombs. If theres a heat source that ignited this, we are looking at, um, Single Family residence. Were look at small children. Reporter at the suspects home, we counted four Young Children inside, more kids next door. Definitely bad for kids because the kids in the house would be killed and surrounding houses would have been affected. Boom, gone, you know . No more house, no more me. Id be in bits and pieces. Reporter the fireworks are worth about 50,000. Neighbors say people have been going to the thousands buy them. They came by in drugs and in cars and walking and buying fireworks. They been shooting them for the last week. Reporter the two suspects will be charged with hundreds of felonies if not over 1,000 counts. Thats because each individual package of fireworks is charged as one felony. In oakland, im da lin, kpix 5. The bust comes two weeks after a fairfield man was critically injured while assembling fireworks in his garage. The bay areas weird weather turned from heat to lightning strikes overnight. As kpix 5s don ford reports, that has firefighters on edge. Reporter when lightning flashed across the bay area sky last night, it certainly got firefighters attention. I heard the thunder and i was thinking, wow, we need to be on our guard because there are lightning storms coming through. Reporter before dawn a fire started in the hills near sunol. Lightning may have sparked it. Potential for multiple lightning strikes in a matter of minutes. Not just one strike. Reporter every. Reporter multiple fires and multiple locations a potential nightmare for firefighters. All because of a highly unusual weather system. Its muggy and associated with subtropical moisture lifting out of arizona from the south north and we are getting clipped by this moisture as it tracks towards the high sierra. Look at the lightning strikes they get in the sierra. See that . Each one indicates a lightning strike. So its a threat tonight. Slowly though the overall trend is clearing things out cooling it down, drying it out. We did cool down today the highs yesterday on the left the highs today on the right and so San Francisco cooled by 4 degrees concord with 10 degrees cooler. It was 12 degrees cooler in livermore. The city added a new department of six people to help keep tabs on Services Like airbnb. Short term rentals were illegal in San Francisco until february. Now hosts have to register with the city. Only a fraction of those listing on airbnb have complied. The new department will be investigating violators. Its been 6. 5 years since california enacted a law that allows consumers to cash out gift cards that have been that have less than 10 on them but consumerwatch reporter julie watts explains people are still having a hard time getting their money. Company policy states that we dont give cash. Reporter that was the answer Angela Hayward got last week when she tried to redeem the remaining 9 on herschel gift card for cash and its the wrong answer. It had a balance of 9. 96 and i thought i could get the cash. Reporter refusing to give customers cash is a mistake stores are still making. Almost 7 years after the implementation of californias gift card law. It clearly states, any gift card with a cash value of less than 10 is redeemable in cash for its cash value. But even with a copy of the law in an las hand and a consumerwatch camera, the employee said no. We dont do that. Whatever is remaining on the card remains on the card. Reporter its not just shell. Our consumerwatch producer visited 10 stores at a bay area mall and 40 were violating state law. Employees at 4 stores told us they would not redeem gift cards worthless than 10. Thats not much a consumer can do other than file a lawsuit in small claims court. Most people wont do that for a couple dollars. Reporter this Attorney Says part of the problem is the law doesnt have any teeth. But angela wasnt out of luck. Before we could leave, a shell district manager suddenly appeared. So theres some confusion on the policy. It is anything under 10. And with us tagging along, she gave angela her 9. 96 along with an apology. Heres whats happening on the hidef doppler. Over the weekend, there were 800 lightning strikes out in the sierra. And you see where all these lightning strikes are showing physically representing each one of them a lightning strike. And over the weekend there were 36 small fires from lightning strikes. Well have to wait. Time will tell if any of that is creating a problem for firefighters in the sierra. In the meantime, its blowing off the sierra heading towards the under the influence of High Pressure system to the south and north. High pressure to the north is driving this stuff to the west. The bottom line is overnight we could have more showers in the bay area as it marches toward the east bay. Wouldnt be surprised just like yesterday. A lot of high cloudiness today. All of it subtropical moisture being ushered along by a low thats abeam san diego and a high up over the Pacific Northwest and that one over the desert southwest. So slight chance tonight of a thundershower or shower. Partly cloudy night with coast and bay fog. A lot of fog out there, too. And then that typical summertime patter than cause asked paul deanno to take two weeks of vacation thinking, im not going to be talking about anything anyway and then we got this epic heat wave and then we got the thunderstorms.
