A contractor working on the highway 17 mudslide was hit and killed by a dump truck near the summit. Kpix 5 reporter devin fehely has more on that tragic accident reporter the cleanup here on highway 17 came to a standstill after a tragic accident killed one construction worker and serious injured another during our noon broadcast. Came out like a whirlwind. Everybody kind of jumped into action. Reporter the construction accident unfolded unexpectedly on live tv. There are a lot of chp crews out here. Reporter kpix 5s maria medina was reporting live in our noon broadcast when tragedy struck. A woman driving on highway 17 started honking and screaming and yelling and just wouldnt stop. Unfortunately, she was trying to get the attention of a chp officer. Reporter the driver who was just too shaken up by what she had seen to talk on camera told me privately that she was driving past the mudslide when she saw a construction worker from granite rock crushed beneath the wheels of a dump truck. But what she didnt see was a second worker trapped but still alive under the same truck. Its extremely upsetting close to home. These people are on the side of the road putting their lives at risk every day. Reporter chp officers and firefighters worked to free the injured man. While his coworkers watched helplessly overcome by emotion. The workers around them visibly shaken, um, so a very sad thing to have witnessed today. Reporter the injured man was eventually loaded into an ambulance and rushed to the hospital. The chp and cal osha launched investigations into what went so horribly wrong here today. On highway 17, in the santa cruz mountains, devin fehely, kpix 5. The Workers Company issued a statement that reads, granite rock is devastated and cooperating with authorities to determine what went wrong. And a Traffic Alert because of this storm. Wahoo reporter its not cool but its certainly a lesson in balance. And one in how to stay entertained when the weather is wet and mom may have had enough of boys in the house. Kyle and his buddies were in kentfield with boogie boards and big grins. This street always floods when it rains hard and its just fun. Reporter many parents in southern marin county juggled the kids because mill valley, rock valley, larkspurcorte madera, and Tam Union High School districts all called off classes today for flooding. We are going a little impromptu. So the kids school got canceled so daddy is giving mom a break and taking them to breakfast. Beyond that we are going to have to figure some things out. Reporter this is the second day this week some parents have had to figure it out. Tuesday, toms youngest was also off. Apparently, the toilets overflowed at the preschool so we got called 45 minutes into his day and said you have to pick the kids up and go from there. Reporter tomorrow, everyone is expected to head back to class. No closures are planned thus far. But in the meantime, dads like tom are going to make the day work. Weve been going to breakfast and then after breakfast, we are going to go to target. Reporter they are headed to target. Well, back out here live, im standing in front of corte madera creek. The good news is that it did not break its banks. So everyone here is hoping to will hold its spot. Live in san anselmo, emily turner, kpix 5. A major road closure to tell you about. Panoramic highway is shut at highway 1 after a chunk of it washed away in the storm. You can see from these photos pieces of asphalt have slid down past the guardrail. No word on when that road could reopen. And the napa river is now a gigantic waterway filled to the max with runoff this evening. Napa county is expecting to see problems on roads an hillsides well after the rain stops. Kpix 5s Susie Steimle is at the napa river has this live report. Reporter as you can see, the napa river has jumped its banks. We are on the oxbow in downtown and this is what its designed to do, otherwise all of this water that youre seeing here would be flooding the downtown. This region is getting hammered hard. Reporter like most of the region, napa county is battling two versions of this storm. Flooding from the ground up and runoff from above. We are going to be seek the oversaturated soils for quite a while 30 to 45 days and thats what we do. Well continue to monitor our roads and keep them clean. Crews still havent been able to clear the amount of debris left behind. 92 people have no power, should have power back by 8 p. M. We pulled out after request of pg e so that they could start working their magic and doing putting the power lines back up. Reporter as for locals they are used to this kind of flooding. Not too bad. I think it was a little bit more the other night. Reporter road crews just want people to be aware of how quickly conditions change and that just because it isnt raining doesnt mean the impact is over. Watch for downed power lines. Be alert. Stay off the phone. And watch for changing conditions. They can happen in seconds. Reporter you can see some debris floating down the river. This is what city leaders were worried about. They blocked off some of the riverside earlier because they were worried trees would get pulled into the water because the ground is so saturated. There were some unusual places for flooding we saw in napa today. Well get to those coming up at 6 00. For now live in napa Susie Steimle, kpix 5. A terrifying experience for an east bay man who thought he was hearing thunder but it was actually a mudslide crashing through his home. The mud flowed down the hill in orinda. Kpix 5s don ford on how the homeowner narrowly escaped the rushing slide. Reporter paul was home when the slide hit. He says at first it was small. Then there was a much larger slide that came through the office and i was hiding in the in the bathroom, um, and, in fact, in the back of it and i realized that i might get pinned there. There was no window or way to get out so i just went ahead and ran right over the slide and out the door. Reporter no one was hurt but the rear of the house is crushed. The slide is huge several hundred yards high, hundreds of feet wide. Still moving. Redtagged, no one is allowed to enter. A hard disk with all my kids digital photos on it would be unfortunately in the bottom of the office under thousands of tons of rock. Reporter neighbors are stunned. Never seen it actively move like it is today. Reporter across town is another problem. Minor road washed out weeks ago but backed up again just recently flooding several feet deep into this home, the homeowner too upset to talk. Crews cleared it but minor road will be closed for a week. We hope to begin work on the project within the next few days. Reporter work at pauls house will not be so quick but he is positive. A few moments ago as owner was leaving, told me that once the debris is removed and the place is dried out that he would have no problem moving back in. [ pause ] reporter in orinda, don ford, kpix 5. We also have a close watch on guerneville. The problem is not just the relentless Russian River but all the creeks and streams that feed into it. One man who owns hundreds of acres near forestville says the creek is a trickle but now its well over 100 feet wide. Some homeowners are at risk of bee stranded and could cut off more roads. Currently, its at about 7 feet deep. And i expect it to rise by the end of the day by maybe upwards of 12 feet possibly flooding the lane trying to access the house with here. Despite all the flows, the homeowners says he is not too worried. He says flooding has been much worse in the past. He says all the rain really helps with his crops come spring. Highway 37 in novato is closed again right now. Both directions are flooded between atherton avenue and 101. This is a bad winter for highway 37. Lanes have been closed off and on with each passing storm. Businesses in san anselmo were ready for the rain. They had sandbags to keep the water out. Some homeowners also tried to protect their homes as the hill seeds grow weaker from the rain. Everything is saturated. Theres nowhere for the water to go. That means through the local creeks and streams and thats where the problems occur. Also, flooding along the San Francisco embarcadero. The storm combined with high tides, sent bay waters spilling up and over on to the lanes between mission and howard streets. One northbound lane was closed. It would be better if the crab was larger. Reporter it was developed by local mcdonalds operators ars part of the regional favorites program. Remember the gilroy garlic fries . They were a huge success. Its a local favorite. You go around Fishermans Wharf, at t park, you find a lot of crab sandwiches. Reporter would you buy a crab sandwich from mcdonalds . No. Reporter the crab experts in San Francisco had a bit of a mixed reaction to the new menu item especially because mcdonalds is using snow crab instead of local dungeness crab. How local is snow crab . Dungeness crab is the premiere crab of the west coast and what everyone comes for. Reporter but mcdonalds says the sentiment is local. We were using crab that was available to us. But the flavors are bay area. Reporter while the crab experts would prefer mcdonalds was purchasing local crab from local crabbers they know the newest menu item will be good for the crab industry. Any positive push for the crab is great for the industry. Reporter so why are they unveiling it in san jose instead of San Francisco . Its simple.
