Early 20s between 59 and six feet tall with dark curly hair or dredlocks pulled back. Asian women might look vulnerable and they might not be as outspoken as women of other races. There is i feel like a [ indiscernible ] of asian women so thats what i mean like i think thats pretty gross. Reporter investigators dont know why he is picking college aged asian women. All the cases happen at night just south of the ucberkeley campus where many students live. They say the man snuck up and grabbed the women from behind before sexually assaulting them. The most recent victim actually chased the guy leading him to run toward this Campus Housing surveillance camera. Makes me nervous especially with a lot of my classes being at night. Officers filed into richmonds Memorial Auditorium to remember Augustine Gus vegas. Kpix 5s anne makovec with the tributes from family and friends. Reporter Augustine Gus vegas was honored by hundreds of officers. The best parts of me are from him. [ crying ] you will live on and you will forever be in our hearts. Reporter gus vegas had been with the Richmond Police force for 15 years. But his family life was number one. And in his off time he founded a nonprofit to help kids in foster care. The love and encouragement you showed all of us kids the same love and edge couragement well show our kids. Reporter this is just the latest chapter in this ongoing encryption fight but the Justice Department responded to apples concerns saying the court order does not as apple alleges require the Cupertino Company to create a back door to every iphone, hack its own users and give the government the power to reach into anyones device. Prosecutors say the government wants apple to help it bypass a security feature allowing them access to that device. Apple is still vowing to fight the order with one executive calling it a, quote, very serious slope. Court hearing is set for march 22. But theres another note to this. This time, brutally attacked, stabbed in the head. It happened in japantown about 8 00 last night. The victim was walking with a Family Member when a man and woman approached them. One of the suspects stabbed the man in the head before snatching his bag. He had lifethreatening injuries. Tourists have been targeted before. Last august a man was shot while chasing two women who stole his tourist camera near lombard and last fall a tourist was pepper sprayed and robbed of his camera on hyde street. A thief hits a San Francisco walgreens and makes off with 1,700 worth of oxycontin. Surveillance video showed how the man went to Great Lengths to hide his identity wearing a hood and ski mask as he demanded the drugs. He also may have kept his umbrella up as he walked into the store to beat the security cameras. A jury is now deciding the case of a former san jose state student accused of a hate crime against his roommate. He is one of three students accused of abusing their africanamerican roommate in 2013. Jurors went home for the day without reaching a verdict. Meanwhile in the south bay hundreds of veterans may have been exposed to tuberculosis. According to the Veterans Affairs medical center, an employee infected with t. B. Worked at the center for months potentially exposing patients. The government says its concerned that hoverboar a fire risk, and hoverboard makers may have to go in a new direction fast. The government is concerned that hoverboards in use are posing a fire risk and its threatening to stop the sales of those boards that dont meet new requirements. Consumerwatch reporter julie watts explains that. You never think, oh, that might happen to us. Reporter allyah says her sisters hoverboard was anything but fun. Last december, it exploded and caught fire inside the familys brentwood home. My mom was like we were never getting any of these ever again. And now after more than 50 similar incidents and 24 states, the government is putting on the brakes. In a letter today the manufacturers and sellers, the Consumer Product Safety Commission warned of a, quote, unreasonable risk of injuries and death and said, all boards must now comply with new Safety Standards established by underwriters laboratories, specifically to address the fire risk. It also warned of recalls and product seizures if companies dont comply. So what about the boards already on the streets . Well, the agency told us it doesnt believe any socalled selfbalancing scooters now in use meet the new Safety Standards. And the agency says consumers should stop riding them immediately and ask for refunds. Now, hoverboards have been on shaky ground for a while. Not just because of the lithium batteries that can overheat or catch fire. They run into people. I have seen them cut people off. Reporter this week San Francisco state became the latest school to ban the scooters. Last month, amazon and overstock stopped selling them. And they have been banned by many major airlines. If companies dont comply with the changes, hoverboards may soon be grounded for good. Now, the cpsc advises hoverboard owners to ask the retailer or manufacturer if your board conforms to the new standards but the agency said it was doubtful that any already on the market currently comply. And todays action only addresses the fire risk. Cpsc says the boards also pose an injury risk. Not just to the guys riding em. The people standing on the sidewalk like the person said there. And i have seen that up close a couple of times. In terms in terms of the fire risk they expect to have new boards comply to the new standards on the market later this year. Thank you. Well, were continuing to follow breaking news out of vallejo. We just obtained video from the from the scene of a deadly shooting. Its in a residential area about 4 p. M. Four people were shot including a 9yearold who was rushed to the hospital. No word yet on their conditions. One adult was killed. A 9yearold child was transported to the hospital as well as another adult female shot in the hand. They are both expected to survive although the 9yearold had a head injury, head wound from we believe a bullet. As far as the suspect, Authorities Say they were in a maroon sedan and investigators are combing the scene for evidence. Well have a live report coming up tonight at 6 00 on kpix 5 news. Reporter well, liz, Bernie Sanders is holding a rally tonight here as one of the last chances to encourage voters to caucus tomorrow. Now, there arent a lot of delegates at stake here in nevada. But there could be a lot on the line. Clinton right now is ahead 8 points in national polls. But here in nevada the story is quite different. If you take a look at the latest cnnorc poll, Hillary Clinton is polling at 48 . Senator Bernie Sanders is polling at 47 . And a lot has changed since her loss in new hampshire. Were here in nevada, its a more diverse population, more than 25 of the population is latino. And there are more African American voters in the state. And Bernie Sanders has put a lot of resources into campaigning here and he is drumming up a lot of support from minority voters. Now, another electorate here in nevada is the culinary union. 57,000 members make up that union. Its it largest one in nevada and its chose then year not to endorse a candidate. Back in 2008 the union endorsed senator barack obama. So those Union Members will be on their own monday to caucus and that may play in Hillary Clintons favor with her supporters staying loyal to her. Republicans going to the gop primary in droves. Tomorrows gop primary could be a nailbiter. So many of the voters here in South Carolina describe themselves as undecided and so many say they could decide go into the polling place and change their minds on the spot. Heres another indication that the tone of this race may have changed. A new poll from the wall street journal and nbc shows donald trump just 5 points ahead of ted cruz. 28 to 23 . Thats a major margin that ted cruz has made up. He made up ground on donald trump here. Then you have ted cruz i mean, you have marco rubio and jeb bush at 15 and 13 . Both predict they would do much better than the polling suggests. In fact, we were with marco rubio early this morning beginning our day at his first of five events today. He predicts a good turnout. We were at the offices of ted cruz today where they have a get out the vote effort for tomorrow. Heres one thing we know for sure. Donald trump is driving the turnout for this election, this gop primary here in South Carolina. What is unknown in that turnout, if votes are coming out to vote for or against donald trump. We have spoken to people on both sides of the coin. Heres an unknown also guys for liz and ken there are some 530,000 registered gop voters in 2012 theres now a quarter million more that have come into the state that are registered to vote another unknown to see which way they break tomorrow. The parade has been going on in San Francisco every year since Abraham Lincoln was president. It dates back to the early 1860s. And every year, it is put on in full regalia, 100 different floats this year. Youre looking at several of them which are sitting outside of pier 54. And the weather this weekend albeit a little bit chilly in the city will cooperate if you want to come see one of the best parades in the world. Its been voted that for many years. Now, that said, there have been some rain showers out there today and there continue to be some rain showers out there this evening. Concord and hayward youre getting rain now so 680, 880 weather impacting that drive home which is always slow on a friday but made slower when you throw in some rain out there but this is light precipitation nothing like what we saw two evenings ago and it will likely clear the bay area by 8 or 9 00 tonight.
