The keys in the ignition when she went to talk with friends at a mall. She saw a suspect drive off in her car. The girl and her friends go after the suspect in one of her friendss car. They continue following him until they catch up and now the suspect is actually stopped in traffic. Reporter what the teen did next investigators say walks a fine line between very brave and very stupid. The girl victim gets out of the car and approaches the drivers door, opens up the door and the suspect shoots her. A female shot. Reporter detectives say the victim was shot at pointblank range but suffered only a graze wound to her shoulder. She has been treated and released from the hospital. The suspect, investigators say ditched the car a few blocks away and escaped. The police say there was a larger lesson to be learned from a situation that could have been much, much worse. People are entitled to protect their property. The message we want to send to the community is, it is property. Your life is more important. Reporter now, police are still looking for the suspect and the teenaged victim was reportedly back at school today. In san jose, devin fehely, kpix 5. The bodies of two small children were found in redding inside this storage unit. The siblings were 3 and 5. The bodies were found when police investigated reports of child abuse in the town of quincy. A child was found in a house there badly injured and is undergoing surgery. 39yearold tammy joy huntsman and a 17yearold boy are being held in jail both charged with felony child abuse, torture and mayhem. The relationship between the children and the couple is unclear right now. New charges for a man accused of kidnapping and killing cats in a san jose neighborhood. 24yearold Robert Farmer was wearing blue jail clothes in court. The son of a former San Jose Police department captain now faces a total of 10 felony counts of animal cruelty. Investigators say Surveillance Video captured farmer grabbing cats. He was later found with a dead cat in his car. Meantime, a group of pet owners showed up outside Farmers Court hearing demanding justice. Many held pictures of their slain pets in a silent protest. I have to think about my pets, bubba and its christmastime and he will miss him. [ indiscernible ] in this christmas. When i saw farmer today in court, its hard to say hard to tell you the kind of feelings i had that went through my heart and my soul. I mean, i really wanted to hurt him. Bail is increased to 125,000. Los angeles officials are defending themselves after closing the city schools for what turned out to be a terror hoax. Phone messages went out telling 640,000 students to stay home. Similar threats were made against new york city schools. But authorities there determined it was a hoax and kept the students in class. The implied threat was explosive devices. The specific threat was attack with assault rifles and machine pistols. There were wording choices and other indicators that suggested a hoax and not jihad. The shutdown in los angeles affected more than 1,000 schools. Classes are expected to resume tomorrow. Hoverboards exploding catching fire, we have heard the stories of them burning down houses. Now overstock. Com and amazon have stopped selling them. Kpix 5s Juliette Goodrich says they are also banned from airlines. Reporter if you plan to bring one of these home you better drive. A lot of Major Airlines are not allowing hoverboards for safety reasons. We learned that some of these hoverboards are not labeled accurately. This one i bought online. We decided to do some investigating after another incident of hoverboards exploding in brentwood. It happened again, an exploding hoverboard. 18yearold allyah denny says they took it off the charger it sparked when she stepped on it. When she quickly dragged the hoverboard from the living room to the front door, seconds after she dropped it, it exploded. But not before it burned part of the rug and wall. My mom was like okay, if this is going to happen like if were risking our lives with these things, we are never getting them again. Reporter they bought it online amazon. Com 235 bucks. Now amazon isnt selling that brand anymore. They took it and others off their website. So when you press on the pad it pushes an opaque barrier. Two package thieves caught in the act. How two san jose women jumped into action until police arrived. Plus, a refinery scare. Why fire and smoke were seen coming from the facility in the east bay. And the half Million Dollars mistake that could make a bay area ferry go backwards. Bridge district. A engineering fail. Causing of its ferries to new at 5 00 a major embarrassment for the Golden Gate Bridge district. An engineering fail causing one of its ferries to move in the wrong direction. Heres the situation. The mendocino is being retrofitted with special water jets. Its part of a 6 million overhaul but when they recently fired up those jets for a test, the surprise. The ferry started going backwards. When we started the engines up, it did not go forward as expected. The water jets were spinning in the wrong direction sucking up water as if it was trying to clear debris. Its not a quick or a cheap fix, either. The bridge district that runts Ferry Service will have to spend a half Million Dollars to make the correction. The hope is to have the mendocino back in service by spring. A small flareup at the tesoro refinery near marathon prompted Health Officials to issue an advisory today. Excessive smoke from the facility drifted into the surrounding areas this morning. The flareup was caused by problems with the refinerys steam generation unit. Officials say the smoke eventually dissipated and the Health Advisory was lifted. A burst of water at an oakland intersection. A truck crashed into a fire hydrant near addison street and arlington avenue. East bay m. U. D. Crews got to the scene just before 10 30 this morning to clean it up. Several oakland firefighters just earned a big award from peta for saving a small dog in a burning home. Crews received the Compassionate Fire Department award because they rushed into a burning oakland home last week to save this dog that was stuck in its carrier. Peta is giving the firefighters a framed certificate and chocolates. Two more shipping containers spotted in waters near the golden gate and in pacifica. Heavy seas knocked 12 containers off a ship on friday. One container and dozens of crates already washed up on baker beach over the weekend. No Hazardous Materials were involved. Reporter San Jose Police nab suspected thieves after catching them in the act. And she said, people are stealing packages out in front. And i said, oh, my god lets go. Reporter it began when liz spotted a suspicious walking in her neighborhood. One minute the woman was empty handed, the next she was getting in her car with a box. They came through here again an took another package. Reporter liz and diana began to alert neighbors who possibly became victimized including one man who had seen the couple, as well. He looked and said you want to go . I said heck, yeah he said come on all three of us went. Reporter the three neighbors, who had never met before, trailed the car with a 911 dispatcher on the phone. Police caught up to the suspects and arrested them but in many cases thieves are getting away with the crime. Palo alto and Sunnyvale Police are looking for thieves bold enough to save packages in broad daylight. Its disturbing because people are buying gifts from their families and you have people stealing. The San Francisco board of supervisors is set to give bikers the green light to treat stop signs like yield signs. Police would treat cyclists stopping at stop signs as low priority. Bikers will be able to blow through an intersection as long as it is safe. They would still need to stop for pedestrians and yield to vehicles. The board has indicated it will pass the law change but theres a chance thats as far as it will go. Mayor lee will probably veto it. We are minutes away from the republican president ial debate. High pressure is holding out for now but a series of lows is just going to take the breath out of this high one after another after another until finally it breaks down the high enough so well get a chance of light rain coming into the north bay by thursday and friday. But for now, it will be cool and dry. Well talk about the extended in a minute. But in the meantime well get a few more clouds tomorrow than today. The futurecast bears this out as we roll the forecast time lapse ahead. A few high clouds as you can see floating in over Northern California and the numbers are going to come down a little bit tomorrow. Then look at what happens by friday around midday. A few light showers moving into Sonoma County and then will sink south into the north bay. Thats friday. In the meantime well just slowly increase some high clouds so to sum it up cold tonight with valley frost, partly cloudy for wednesday and cool. And the chance of some sprinkles in the north bay on thursday. It wont amount to much. Friday will all look to get wet. High temperatures tomorrow in the 50s not far from usual. Down in the south bay mid50s mostly sunny. Wednesday looks nice. East bay too just more high clouds and temperatures ranging from the low 50s to the mid 50s. But not much variation. Up in the north bay, more high cloudiness tomorrow than we had today and readings again mid 50s and chilly but mid december. And then up by you can see and lakeport and clearlake the numbers will be in the upper 50s and high clouds. In the extended forecast, well increase clouds and by friday we get a chance of light rain for everybody in the bay area. Saturday wet. Sunday, monday, tuesday, every day washout. But instead of like generations past who turned to homemade to save money, for millennials homemade is the antigift card something tangible in our increasingly virtual world. It just feels real to get a homemade gift in a way that we kind of crave. Reporter and with sites like etsy where you can buy stuff thats homemade in other peoples homes, now anyone can gift crafty gifts even if they cant craft themselves. Are you excited . Yes. Facebook and instagram allows you to do that now so it really makes makes an intangible gifts like tickets to someplace more tangible. Reporter the National Retail federation nearly 306 of consumers will buy something for themselves this year. But yarrow takes offense to those who imply selfgifters are greedy. She says millennial or not, more shoppers are simply savvy. People have postponed a lot of purchases until this time of the year because they know selection is better, prices are better. Reporter now, yarrow says another way that gifting has changed this year is that retailers are finally responding to the way millennials and many folks shop browsing online while in store. She says its no longer either or online or brick and mortar. But both always. Something retailers are now learning. You go to the mall and most people are hooking up their phones while they are shopping. Were so connected. More stores will price match the prices that you find on your apps or your comparison apps, your websites. Its important to know what else is out there. How the city is helping the homeless in union square to find a place to call home. Coming up next. ,,,,,,, in time for the holidays theres a new effort to do something about the homeless in San Franciscos union square. Business leaders are working to bring in and out reach group. It would patrol the area around the shopping mecca and work with the homeless in the area. They will also hand out flyers with a hotline to call if people someone who could use some help. They are calling it union square cares. What we are hoping to do is to have Better Outcomes for the individuals that we know in our district that are in need. And in doing that, they have a better life and making sure we have a healthier Stronger Community here in union square. In tonights bay area job market report, cbs News Business analyst Jill Schlesinger reports on how nonprofit groups play a role in the entire economy. Reporter this is the time of year that many people ramp up their Charitable Giving and while you would likely thought about how various nonprofits impact the groups they serve, you may never have stopped to think about how they impact the larger economy. Nonprofits accounted for 11. 4 million jobs in 2014, the most recent year figures are available from the bureau of labor statistics. Thats a big chunk of private sector employment. 10. 3 . These jobs grew steadily during the recession and that growth is expected to continue. The bls predicts the hiring of social and Community Service managers will climb 21 between now and 2022. An aging population will boost the need for workers who assist the elderly. The bls also suggest that is managers leading drug treatment programs will be in demand as illegal drug offenders are increasingly sent to treatment programs instead of jail. Managers who lead social and Community Service groups in the bay area typically earn over 78,000. While anyone can volunteer to help a nonprofit, the employees heading these groups are generally expected to have a college degree, in some instances a masters degree preferred.
