Earlier they rallied on the steps of city hall carrying signs with messages like, hands up, dont shoot. Woods was carrying a knife when officers shot him at least 15 times last week in the bayview. The police chief says the killing was justified. And the officers acted in self defense. But kpix 5s cate caugiran shows us, protestors and a prominent local attorney disagree. Cate. Reporter well, veronica, the protests here have been mainly peaceful. The students that were chanting, they were calling for justice for mario woods and others who have been killed by police shootings. We dont feel safe. Dont shoot dont shoot reporter in the crowd of students and protestors were signs of faces of those shot and killed by Law Enforcement in the bay area and across the country. No justice no peace no racist Police Reporter there was this sign, evict San Francisco police chief greg suhr. The group made mostly of Lincoln High School students walked out of class and marched to city hall calling for justice for mario woods. Seeing that especially because it was in the area where i live and i wasnt i dont live too far from it and hearing about that it hurt me. I was really hurt. No reason for officers five or six officers to use their weapons on a young man who had a knife who wasnt actually putting them at real risk. Reporter protestors attempted to go inside a few times but were turned away by police. Chopper 5 video shows as the day continued the crowd grew larger. Officers stayed close by and marched on all the way to union square blocking traffic before they made their way back to city hall. I just think its an affront and an insult to be asking american communities. Reporter earlier today civil rights attorney john burruss filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of the family. He showed what he called new video of the shooting. He claims it proves woods had his hands down at the time of the shooting. This oakland complex sustained perhaps the most damage in this overnight rainstorm. The city says that eucalyptus tree is about 130 feet tall. Its now leaning against the back side of this complex. A high surf warning has been extended through 9 00 tonight. You can see the waves slamming up against the pacifica pier. The pier was closed for a second straight day with waves reaching more than 15 feet high. And here is an aerial view of those monster waves from chopper 5. As you can see, the waves start breaking far offshore. And down the coast in ventura, tides are crashing into beachfront homes. Breached barriers are causing whole neighborhoods to flood. The pier has been closed indefinitely after waves broke off support beams. So the rain is now over but meteorologist Brian Hackney is tracking yet another storm right on its heels. Santa clara investigators releasing pictures of two collars found inside the car of suspected catnapper robert farmer. 23yearold man was arrested on felony animal cruelty charges after surveillance cameras caught him snatching a cat on a san jose street. Besides the collars, the investigators are trying to find the owner of an orange tabby found dead in farmers car. This is an extremely disturbing case. Our hearts go out to the family members and owners of these cats that are missing, injured or dead some small solace that the defendant is in custody at this point and cannot hurt any other animals. Farmers bail has been set at 75,000 which is above the scheduled amount. A tragic crash in san jose. Two teens were killed last night when their car hit a truck head on. It happened on alum rock avenue. Police say an 18yearold was driving four friends when he drifted into oncoming traffic. The driver along with another 18yearold man in the car died at the scene. Two girls in the car survived the crash. The driver of the truck has major injuries to his legs. And in sunnyvale a pedestrian was killed this morning after getting hit by two cars. It happened on southbound sunnyvale saratoga road. Police say a man in his 30s was crossing the street before dawn when he was hit. As he was lying in the street another car hit him. He died it the scene. Bay area Islamic Center is closed after an envelope containing white powder showed up in its mail.
