Right now scientists are conducting a necropsy trying to figure out what killed a beached whale. Kpix 5s devin feastly is on that beach thats attracting a lot of attention tonight. Devin fehely reports. Reporter a team of scientists and volunteers from the Marine Mammal center just finished work. They say this is the 18th sperm whale who washed up in this part of california since they started keeping records about 40 years ago. And they say their goal now is to figure out how and why this animal died. From the deeply concerned pretty unusual. Pretty sad, actually. Reporter to the merely curious im not surprised that a whale would wash up. I havent seen anything wash up this big. Reporter the rare and sat sight of an adult male sperm whale that washed ashore in pacifica drew onlookers by the dozens. The poor dead whale lying on the beach. Reporter debbie came for a closer look at the massive Marine Mammal. Its part of life and nature. Its always bad to see a large beautiful animal like that, um, dead. But, um, you know, its also, you know, just part of the cycle of life. Reporter and she wasnt alone. A team of scientists with the Marine Mammal center performed a necropsy on the animal. While it may not look like it to the untrained eye, it was sick and possibly starving when it washed ashore. It looked very thin. His bones are protruding. And it appears that he hasnt been eating, um, theres not a lot of stomach contents. Reporter the scientists wont know for a while the cause of death or if its related to the death of other Marine Mammals like seals which have been washing ashore in record numbers. The only question that remains at this point is what happens to the whales body. The Marine Mammal center would like to leave it where it is and allow nature to take its course but they say they are working in conjunction with pacifica, who may want to bury the whales body. In pacifica, devin fehely, kpix 5. Tonight federal officials put out a warning to boaters to watch out for whales. Spring and summer are prime migration seasons. Whales frequently pass through the bay area waters heading for mexico to the arctic. Fiveyearold girl targeted, attacked and choked by a stranger. She was walking with her mom this morning in the Marina District in San Francisco. A man came up and choked her at union and octavia, just grabbed the kid. Several witnesses saw it called 911. The suspect was arrested within minutes. The girl has some minor injuries to her neck but is expected to be okay. A calculated smashandgrab in San Francisco is all caught on camera. A team of burglars knew exactly what they were doing when they shattered the front windows and stole thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. Reporter police say this was a professional job and tonight the four suspects are on the run but the surveillance tape is providing clues for police. It happened at 4 30 this morning at the store called stuff on valencia street. The burglars pulled up in a black truck. Watch as they get out, people on the streets as lookouts. One even rides around on a bike. Police say that suspect used a slingshot to shatter the front doors. Take a look at all of the damage left behind. Broken glass is everywhere inside of the store. 5,000 worth of merchandise was stolen from stuff. The store owner says it will cost thousands to fix the damage. He is banking on the video to bring the thieves to justice. The police will be looking at the videos to identify some of the people because there are very noticeable things about the people. Police say three burglars escaped in the truck before they got away on the bicycle. Theres been a rash of smash andgrabs in the bay area in recent months. Suspects made off with gold nuggets from a wells fargo bank. Thieved smashed into a patagonia truck at Fishermans Wharf and two av stores were hit with pricy equipment stolen. Its an aboutface from an interview last year where clinton supported leaving it up to the states. Kpix 5 consumerwatch reporter julie watts on what the first of its kind standards mean for us. Reporter we already have efficiency standards for light bulbs, toilets and most major appliances. Computer monitors and small servers could be next. The States Energy commission is proposing Energy Standards that would require new computers and monitors sold here in california Useless Energy. The state says efficiency rules are needed because current models use at least five times more energy than those from a decade ago. Theres also a lot more of them. Now, the state says there are roughly as many computers and monitors as there are people in california. And supporters say manufacturers wont increase efficiency on their own. When the consumer gets a laptop or computer, they are worried about the functionality, what it can do, how fast it works. They dont see the electricity consumption. Reporter the proposed standards would leave it up to manufacturers to decide how to make their products more energy efficient. But they are intended to make sure they Useless Energy when theyre idle or off. It could increase the cost of the monitor or computer but the state said it would be offset by reduced electricity costs. The standards would take effect over the next through years.
