Reporter Health Officials at Ronald Reagan Ucla Medical Center insist everything is being done to protect its patients after two people died and potentially 178 others were exposed to a superbug resistant to antibiotics. This particular outbreak of cre is not a threat to the health of the public in los angeles county. Reporter ucla became aware of a problem back in december when a patient who had a procedure using endoscope immediately became sick. Seven other infected patients were identified and by late january, the hospital says they realized a superbug was to blame. But it wasnt until yesterday nearly three weeks later that the general public and the patients exposed to the bacteria were notified. Some of it was logistics. It takes time to identify the patients who were at risk for the procedure. What we have to do is really meticulously go through the, um, patient charts and ensure that they were indeed exposed. Reporter dr. David a. Ggas oncologist says the threeweek delay isnt acceptable. Who knows who those people who could be infected kissed or potentially spread the bacteria to . Reporter ucla has sent home testing kits to those who were exposed. Its like an Insurance Company sending you a can of paint, fix your car after an accident. Reporter hospital Officials Say they have removed the two end scopes linked to the outbreak and five more in an abundance of caution. The investigation is warning hospitals nationwide that the design of these particular scopes make them difficult to clean. Ucla says they are now using gas sterilization to clean all of their scopes. Across the country there have been four deadly outbreaks of this superbug since 2011. In westwood, im kristine lazar, kpix 5. The Santa Cruz Sheriffs Office is asking for help finding a woman who disappeared from a hospital two years ago after giving birth. She was last seen in november of 2012 at the Sutter Maternity Center in santa cruz. No one heard a word from her since. She left her newborn son at the maternity center. His name is brody and he is now 2. His biological father is raising him on his own. He is holding on to hope that his sons mother comes back to be part of his life. I just hope the best for her. I just hoping everything is fine with her. Theres going to be a time when he is going to school and everything that im going to have to explain to him i would like his mom to explain to him whats going on besides me. She is listed as a voluntary missing adult. Brandon says he was she was previously involved with drugs and that may have played a factor in her disappearance. Developing news in the road rage murder out of las vegas. A standoff ended in the arrest of a teenaged suspect. 19yearold eric noush was taken into custody a few blocks from where he is accused of killing tammy meyers. He faces murder, attempted murder and two other felonies. The 44yearold meyers was giving her daughter a driving lesson last thursday when police say the daughter honked at the the other car for speeding and that sparked a confrontation. Meyers drove back home to pick up her son, who also had a gun. Police say they went back out looking for noush. The incidents ended with an exchange of gunfire outside the meyers home. The mother was shot in the head, taken off life support on valentines day. Theres the animal, a block away are you happy . Thats meyers husband very emotional at the scene of the arrest today. He tried to cross the street in front of the suspects home but he was held back. He was unhappy with the media portraying his wife as and the animal in the road rage case. Juan lopez has now been charged with nine counts related to his failed run for county sheriff last year. Prosecutors say lopez lied about living in this house in newark which is in alameda county. That would make him ineligible to run in san mateo county. Lopez has pleaded not guilty. In november, he was charged with conspiracy for helping two guards smuggle a cell phone and drugs to a prisoner in redwood city. A chp motorcycle cop is recovering tonight from minor injuries after a crash on the bay bridge. Chopper 5 was overhead just after the noontime crash on the lower deck near Treasure Island. Chp says the officers bike slid into another motorcycle. The second biker stayed upright and was unhurt. New details about last springs rampage near the Uc Santa Barbara campus. Reporter what weve learned is Elliott Roger prepared long and carefully for his assault on fellow students last may. According to a new report, in december of 2012, roger began spending thousands of dollars to get the guns and ammo. And he visited gun ranges on several occasions in the months leading up to his attack. But investigators say he twice postponed his night of terror. They think he practiced stabbing and slashing techniques before the attack. Rogers stabbed george chen of san jose 94 times. The two other victims inside the apartment were also ambushed and stabbed each more than a dozen times. They were also from the bay area. Later rogers started shooting people while driving around the isla vista campus neighborhood killing three more people and wounding 13 others. He shot himself after a shootout with police. The victims families are upset the report was released today. All of them are chinese and today is the Lunar New Year. Dozens are protesting the shutdown of dispensaries in vallejo. The city council back in january voted to close all medical cannibis dispensaries and not accept sales tax from the businesses. Today dispensaries owners tried to give the city the tax money anyway. Medical cannibis helps vallejo. It helps sick people. It helps working people. It provides over 150 fulltime jobs in the city of vallejo. The protestors say by voting to close the dispensaries, vallejo rejected a possible 5 million in annual revenue. The search is on for two men who stole thousands of dollars in merchandise from a palo alto store. They got into this photography store by driving a van through the front plate glass window. This warm water pocket stretches from alaska down to baja, mexico. Reporter this warm water affects the fish their mothers eat and without proper nutrition themselves, moms have a hard time nursing the pups. The fish disperse. They go to different places. They because the warm water pushes them to different areas. Reporter now, 550 california sea lions are being treated in rescue facilities across the state. The Marine Mammal center has nearly 200 of them. And more are coming in every day. At what point will you reach capacity . I dont see us hitting capacity soon because we are going to be release animals. Reporter a special mix of herring and fish oils are blending and forcefed to pups too young to eat fish too young to be without their mothers. Getting world class care from volunteers, its a tough job. A lot of them are still dying, too far gone. They are babies underweight and the vets are doing the best they can. Reporter most of them survive and are returned to the wild. While the Marine Mammal center is holdings its own caring for all these sea lions they are bracing for the annual struggling elephant seal pups which could arrive next week. In marin county, don ford, kpix 5. Covered california says its sorry. The apology comes after it sent about 100,000 incorrect tax forms to people who purchased private insurance through covered california. The bad forms could force people to delay or then have to amend their tax filings. Covered california has sent email and postcard notices to those affected saying it is sorry for the inconvenience. San jose police have arrested two people in connection with the shooting death of a Security Guard. 34yearold manny zuniga was working at the nightclub saturday night and noticed a robbery under way at a Convenience Store next door and tried to help. Security video caught the portion of that. The Security Guard was shot by the suspects as they drove away. The two suspects were taken into custody and are now being questioned by police. A close shave for two stunt planes. They were at an airshow in southern india. They were trying an inverted loop when they clipped each other and the wings of both planes were damaged. But the pilots kept control and landed safely. San francisco streets flooded today with Lunar New Year festivities. That is the north wind less of the onshore flow, and a much earlier breakout of the sunshine tomorrow and also saturday. So morning clouds will still be prevalent. We just will see less of that cloud cover from midmorning onward. So low clouds do return tonight. It will be sunny for most of us tomorrow. But those who completed a bachelors degree or higher were in better shape with a rate of just 2. 9 . Those with masters degrees had an Unemployment Rate of 2. 2 and those with a doctorate had a 1 Unemployment Rate. But not all advance degrees are created equal. Pay scale. Com ranged mid career salaries and projected employment growth. Topping the list was physician assistants studies with a median salary of 97,500. And a 38 projected job growth rate over the next decade. Those with engineering degrees earned over 100,000 by mid career.
